5AT 2007-2008 TYPE-S owners, do you?
Just wondering if you regret getting the 5AT Type-s instead of the manual? Just need some input before or if I decide to swap my 5AT TL for the type-s manual. TIA for any feedback guys.

No I dont. I'm in stop and go traffic for an hour in the morning and an hour and half in the evening. If I want to take advantage of engine braking (beyond the 5AT's brake assist) i'll just put it in SS which some say would have otherwise been an advantage for a manual in traffic. So.. I guess i'm one of the three out of the ten.

I love the 5AT TypeS.
I set out to get a manual when I got my new car a few months ago, but the more I thought about it, the Auto with SS made sense.
Lots of stop and go traffic ...i can leave in in auto and not mess with it.
But when at night, when I want to drive ....I can let it rev up, and the paddle shifters just make it that much more fun! They are really responsive, and you dont have to let off the throttle at all!

well, i was really looking for a manual but ended up with a 5AT and I can't say that I regret it... 1. my girl friend can now drive my drunk ass home at night
2. stop and go traffic to and from work, and
3. still fast and smooth and a blast to drive (+supposedly less torque steer, no personal experience tho)

Regret is not quite the right word. Did I compromise with the 5AT? Yes.
It's my wife's daily driver and she doesn't do stick. If it were mine alone, then I'd regret not getting the MT.
Really, what'd be nice ( ) would be a 6-speed true sequential manual. Even a 6-Speed auto would be better.

one of my cousins reasons for not getting a manual:
SO when I am drunk or a bit loopy/sleepy after college stuff (back when he was at UCF), I can drive with both hands and be able to start it without forgetting something.

"...there's no masking that the torque plays an unwanted role in the steering, especially now, with the direct connection via the six-speed gearbox. If anything, the limited slip exacerbates the existing torque steer, pulling on the wheel as if each pound-foot were a G.I. Joe action figure in a tug of war. On the plus side, as long as you're conscious of this trait, accelerating out of turns is surprisingly fast, although a bit nerve-racking. A jaunt in a TL with an automatic revealed far less torque steer, thanks to the torque converter that smoothes out the power relay and the lack of a tugging limited-slip. We're usually not ones to say stuff like this, but the automatic is arguably the more fitting transmission for the TL's lofty power numbers."

I have a 07 AT TL-S and im having a blast. Ya occasionaly there will be open road in front of me and ill wish i had a MT. But overall AT takes away a whole lot more stress rather than the MT.
In the end it comes down to what do you REALLY want. I have friends that love MT and will never consider or even look at a car thats AT. You need 2 really sit down and think about it and make sure you love MT, so you dont go and give all that money and end up regreting it.
If i were to get my TL MT and have one day where i regreted getting this car then it wouldnt be worth it for me.

I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer an MT... even in traffic. It keeps me occupied and "involved". With that said, I happen to think the AT in the TL-S is very good (and matches the car's "character" very well) --- the sport shifter in the middle console is one of the best I've tried, and is very responsive. On the other hand, I happen to think the paddle shifters are worthless POSs. Maybe the paddles and SS in the middle console are programmed the same way, but it just *feels* different...
Anywho, to answer the OP, I personally would always choose the 6MT every time (and yes, my wife can't really drive a stick either... but who's car is it primarily anyway )... but I wouldn't be as regretful about it as if it were between a 6MT and 5AT in a NA 4-banger, where power delivery was even more crucial to the driving experience...

Unless you are die hard racer, and plan to get every last millisecond off of your 1/4, the auto is fine. I have driven both and find the auto much more comfortable to drive. It's still very quick and less annoying.
The 6spd is for the true boy racer who loves to have fun everytime he gets in the car. It does pull extremely hard and is noticiably quicker but not enough for me to opt for the manual over the auto.
So you have to decide if you want to be constantly shifting and getting the extra power or take a small compromise and be comfortable.

LOL on the drunk driving. My friend jokingly called the interactive cruise control feature on his IS350 the "drunk driving option" and the dealer gave us a dirty look.
I don't have an "S" but I'm happy with the auto. I bought this car to be comfotable and to get from point A to point B with as little hassle as possible. It fits the bill nicely. I agree with others, if I had a sports car it would have to be a manual. Looking at a manual stripper Civic for a work car now.

For the main question:
There are times where I wish I had gotten the manual, but in the end I'm happy that I have the auto most of the time. My car spends more time in idle in Atlanta than it does in motion... If the extra responsiveness and sprint had been that important for me I probably wouldn't have gotten the TL. Again, after the 170hp the TL-S seems mighty quick as is.

I had a 5spd Mustang GT that I drove in traffic every day for 5 years (100,000+ mi)
I really enjoy the MT when I am not in stop and go traffic. I sometimes wish I had gotten the MT on the Acura. But then there are days like last night, when after being on my feet all day, my legs just ached. I was very glad I got the AT.
Another factor is that my wife never learned to drive a MT (I was hoping she would with the Stang) She very rarely drives, but just in case it is better to have the AT.
Overall it is a tradeoff, but I don't regret my choice.

I traded my '05 6MT for an '07 TL-S 5AT for several reasons:Lower resale value of the 6MT in most cases
Arthritis in knee all gone after switching to 5AT
Now have car that wifey can drive if she wants/needs to
IMO, within 5 years you won't see a true manual transmission offered by any manufacturer. They will be replaced by SMT's, CVT's, and whatever new technology comes around to be offered, and will only detract from the resale value even further.

To the OP, just out of curiosity, what has you pondering the 5AT vs 6MT? My personal feeling is that if you're already viewing it as a "compromise" by going to AT, then you should really go out and get the manny. If, however, you're just wondering if you're missing out on some added "excitement" by NOT getting the MT, I wouldn't worry. I spent 2 weeks behind the wheel of my father's '07 TL-S Auto (the rents were on vacation), and it has great driving dynamics, is still hella quick off the line, and the SS is very responsive to boot.
The biggest reason I ask is because I went to an auto once (my serious gf at the time --- who is now my wife --- couldn't drive a stick) for practical reasons, and regretted it for the whole 1.5 yrs I had it. Some pickup truck driver wasn't paying attention during an evening commute home, and hit me from behind going 50+ mph. They totaled the vehicle, and I was actually uber stoked because it gave me the opportunity to get into another MT vehicle. With that said, it's nice to borrow the wife's ride (MDX) and just cruise...
You have to evaluate your reasons. As an MT lover, I think the AT TL-S would satisfy my "boy racer" (as one poster put it) tendencies for the most part...

90% of the time, I am glad that I got the AT. I have another car that is my back and forth to work car, MT. So when I get in the Acura, it is nice to not have to use a clutch. 10% of the time, I wish that I had gotten the MT, and that is only when I really want to push it hard. There are alot of complaints about the AT, and I understand that there is a better application of power with a MT, but I unlike alot of the AT in some other cars, including the TSX, I think the TLS AT does a very good job putting the power to the wheels. I am happy with the TLS I purchaced.
