Unhappy 50 MPH Side Impact

I recently aquired this new 07 TL Type S after owning an 03 Type S for 5.5 years from new. Never a scratch on the 03, but after only 2500 miles I was t-boned by an 01 Toyota Sepuoia SUV at aprox 45 mph. I was jarred pretty good, but actually not too bad thanks to the unibody impact absorption system. These cars really take a lick well, although not cheap. Initial insurance adjuster put $7500 on it but after the tear down it was reset to $13,500!

After acciident...

Under repair...

I'm hoping for the best with the repair, but not real confident of it ever being the same.

What do you guys think?

Will it still be be a great car or is it just trade-bait?

Glad you're OK.
If it doesn't feel right after the repair, trade it in. Don't want to drive around for 5 yrs in a car that doesn't feel good.

Good lord on the repair pictures.

Ask to repair shop to find just a little more wrong with it, then get it declared totaled.

glad to hear you made it out okay. I wouldn't want that to be repaired. I'd suggest maybe trying to make them total your car and go get another Type-S considering yours only has 2500 miles. There appears to be a lot of reconstruction required in this case. Probably will never be the same. You may get wind noise etc if it isnt repaired right. Just my

I actually drove the car home from the accident. 2 miles or so and it drove fine. Just tucked the side air bag up thru the sprung open door and off I went.

How many other vehicles drive away from an accident with 13K plus in damage.

They said no way to total it when sticker was 39K. Gieco said repair cost must be over 60% of value to total it. Do I have options to fight that?

Someone wrote "jacked up" on the B pillar No $hit.

Unfortunately, I doubt you'll get to $24k. Glad you're ok...good luck with getting it repaired and I hope it is still "right" afterwards.

We have done plenty of side impacts that were alot worse then that. If its at a reputable repair shop and the do it properly u should never be able to tell it was in an accident.

I was about to say, damn, you were still able to drive it home? thats really impressive and speaks a lot about the car.

im with everyone (including you) on wanting to have the car declared totalled. it just wont be the same. the frame is most likely bent, most of the panels (including the other side) may not line up completely anymore and overall, you'll probably have a ton of noise that werent there before.

glad you made it out ok

ima be honost with you, thats not too bad..i seen worse. seems like some work to your a pillar, new door and componenets, DMR and rest is all cosmetics, cars seems like it need about 5 hours an a frame machine if that. dont be fooled by the estimates that adjusters write up. if the body shop is well connected they will bump it up for them.

My 2007 Accord was hit in a similar accident. I was hoping that the insurance company would total it. The initial estimate from the body shop was only $16,000. We paid $32,000 for the car. About two weeks after that estimate the insurance company called and said that the body shop submitted a secondary estimate totalling $29,000. TOTALLED. The second estimate was after the body shop tried ordering new parts from Honda for a car that was a month old.

mrpickem,

Man, I'm sorry to see that! I don't know if it'll make you feel any better, but I was in the same predicament as you about 6 months ago. I had only had my car 5 months, and some kid t-boned me big time. It was a kid who was an illegal alien, on top of that! He had no soc. sec. #, ID, or DL! The car wasn't his (obviously), but it was in fact insured by the driver's aunt. So her insurance company did cover my repairs/med. bills. My total estimate came to $17K after tear-down... I did my best to convince the insurance company to total out my car, but they said the same thing: damage has to be 60% of the car's total value...so I got her repaired by a BOMB auto body shop, thank the Lord! They fixed everything...and had to even cut out the original b-frame pillar, and replace it with a new one! You can't tell a single bit...toward the end of the repair work...a certain part on the inside of my d/s passenger door panel had to get replaced and it was on back order (all Acura OEM parts). So, they had to keep my car for an extra week. Guess what...during that extra week, I was a victim of a hit and run on my rental! Well, I of course went back and told the body shop about this...and guess what? They paid for my insurance deductible out of their own pocket! They even apologized for not having the part on time which was on back order, and it wasn't even their fault! Afterwards, this body shop even repaired and repainted my bumper from rock chips for free twice...at no charge, even though it had nothing to do with the original incident. On top of all this, they always wash my car when I ask them, too, for free! BTW, for all of you SoCal'ers, the body shop is G & D Auto Collision in Costa Mesa. You will never go wrong with them...

So I feel your pain, mrpickem, but just as was mentioned before...a good body shop can get the job done. I hope all turns out well with your car.

That's amazing for a 50mph impact.

The damage doesn't look too bad. It could be a lot worse. It should still drive pretty well after the repairs. And yeah, it's pretty funny how they wrote "jacked up" on the B-pillar

Be sure to search the threads for information on "loss of value" after a major accident. There are some insurance companies that cover you for it (I think) and there are services out there that will help you fight insurance companies for what you deserve.

(i.e. - your $39K car sustained major damage resilting in making it $X less in value to the resale market.)

Bummer. Glad your ok

If its a good shop there should be no difference after than before. Make sure your happy with the work before taking full delivery of it and if any thing arises soon after make sure you bring it up with the body shop. Do a full walk around of the car in daylight and look for anything that doesnt seem right. Dont pick it up at night.

wow. that sucks... really should affect the "drive" of the car, since engine, drivetrain and suspension seems to be intact... i wouldnt doubt that you may get wind noises, or excess rattles..

hey, now is a good time to install an iPod adapter, since your dash is basically out

god i love KBP... girlfriend said i was getting "too old" for a color like that, and convinced me to go WDP

I'm glad you weren't hurt! It's amazing that the TL can handle a 45MPH T-Bone and not hurt the driver...WOW!

Last summer, some old lady backed into my driver door. I got Diminished Value from her Insurance Company...not much, but I took it anyway. The body shop was originally going to reskin the door, but it would never look like a factory door weld at the seams. They ended up pulling out the dents, and the repair looks awesome....paint too! In your case, with a brand new car....I'd insist on a NEW DOOR...everything...frame, power windows etc. That door will never look right with new skin...it will always look repaired to someone buying the car in a few years. They might make it look OK from the outside, but when you open the door you'll notice. Cost of a new door might total the car...check it out.

Im really sorry, Im glad your ok. I was hit and ran in my 06. Side airbags depolyed but not as bad as your accident. Insurance played the same game. First quote was 16,000. Body shop had to replace the rear sub frame and for the second visit to the shop had to replace the trunklid and repaint the rear. It was a 2 month ordile that I do not wish on anyone. Total cost 26,000. About the value of my car at the time. Find a acura certified body shop, let them go over EVERYTHING thats wrong with the car. If my side impact costed 26,000 im pretty sure your getting a new car. Just make sure the body shop and insurance company do not play games.

So *that's* how you get the door speakers out. Hmmm, seems a bit extreme.

Anyhow, glad you're OK and it's very impressive that you were able to drive away.

Maybe it was 50, maybe 40...I dunno. What I do know is it was in a 45 MPH speed limit, I was only going 10 mph or so and he hit me flush and the skid marks showed that he pushed me close to 2 feet sideways! I'm no expert, but I'd bet it was at least 40 and prolly over 45.

A cop actually witnessed the wreck while writing a ticket in the parking lot and he commented to me that he thought the guy was speeding but it was still my fault anyways since I violated his right of way. I was turning left on an 8 lane road...1st 3 lanes were stopped and I was going between the cars, the 4th lane got me, as the SUV was full speed and obviously not paying attention,

Sorry about the car, but there is no way that was at 50 MPH at impact. I rarely find people accurately look at the speedometer immediately before impact, rather than hitting the brakes ...

Did all of your TL's safety systems work as advertised? Did both the side curtain airbags and the airbag on the side of the driver's seat go off? I've never been in an accident in which airbags have been deployed, so I'm curious what the experience is like, especially with these newer side airbag systems.

hmm if you requested all genuine Honda parts for the repair, I'm sure that would bump up the estimate and get it close to that 60% threshold.

Side curtain air bag did deploy and I seen it seemed very large, filling almost 1/4 the interior for a brief instance. No driver seat air bag deployed...wasn't aware they had one there. Most impressive was the shock absorption imo.

The estimate was done with all genuine Acura/Honda parts.

San Jose Blvd

I probably will trade it in even though I'll most likely get raped!

the airbags hurt me in my accident... since I have an auto the car rolls at wat 5mph so I let off the brake and someone smacked into me... all airbags deployed and pushed me to the opposite side... saw everything in slow motion, kinda cool... reminded me of the music video where the guy isn't wearing his seatbelt and is in a head one collision
