>50 MPG this weekend

Was coming home from a weekend vacation and it was in the mountains. Coming down the mountain, I barely touched the gas at all and for the first 30 mins of the trip, my tripometer said >50 MPG. After about a 2.5 to 3 hour trip home, I averaged 30 mpg...... WOULDN'T it be GREAT if we could get >50 MPG?!?!?

Thats like a million miles per tank. TAKE THAT GAS STATIONS!!!

We would all get 50 MPG if all our driving was only downhill and only had to touch the brake pedal....DUH

if you drive all highway and go 55MPH in 6th Gear, you can get up to 600MPT (Miles Per Tank)

well there were hills the whole way home.... it seemed every hill I went up took 1 mpg off the avg. I would just set the cruise for about 65 or 70 and once I got up to about 25 mph from a stop light, I would click 'Resume' on the cruise control and let it take me up to speed slowly.... that did well for me.... just need to be patient on that.

oh and THANKS DMZ... I didn't realize that! Maybe from now on I'll point out in my posts the sarcasm so that maybe you can understand

It would be great if hundred dollars bills fell out of my arse when I take a dump, too, but that's happened about as often as I've averaged 50 mph for an entire tank of gas.

I find that when I do all-highway driving the best I usually manage is right around 30 mpg because invariably I hit some truck traffic or something else that makes it impossible to maintain a consistent speed. But 30 mph is pretty good in a car of this size with a V-6. As others have said, that sixth slot on the transmission is a glorious thing.

I think the TL may get better gas mileage than my 03 CLS 6MT, but I thought the TL must be heavier. The engines and manual trannies are very similar.

I've gotten maybe 26 on the highway, that's with the AC on. In town, I get maybe 19.

My juiced up Jetta TDI, with European 6 speed and engine mods laid down 250+ ftlbs of torque and regularly got 55 mpg up and down 95.

I miss the milage and raw unadulterated brute strength of the engine and Bilstien based "rollercoaster" suspension, but don't miss the maintenence and bugs.

I'll say it again... Hybrid technology is too immature for consumption. Clean diesel all the way. Look at Europe. 1 out of 4 European cars is a diesel using low poluuting Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD)... which will be mandated in the US in 2007

Ye I was resetting my trip meter once while going down a hill on a steady coast and it also showed >50 and I was like WHAT!! I wish it stayed that way...it then fell down to around 34-35mpg which is still good while driving a constant 70mph! ;p Hybrid TL

I must be doing something very wrong. I normally drive 75-85 during trips on the highway, and I get anywhere from 21-25 normally

Isn't DUPA a polish word with an English translation?

I used to work with a guy named Lenny Dupa who had a sign over his desk:
"YOU BETCHA DUPA I'M POLISH" though he was South American

I assure you you're not doing anything wrong. It's very intriguing how some people like myself get the same mileage as you, and some are getting 30-34 at those speeds.

Are you referring to tanks of gas that are ALL highway driving, or to tanks where you do some driving on the highway and some in the city? My 30 mpg tanks have all been tanks where I have driven solely on the highway: Northern Virginia to Albany (stop for gas en route to Canada); Ottawa to Frackville, PA (stop for gas on the way home from Canada); Northern Virginia to Edenton, NC, for a wedding; Hancock, MD (stopped for gas on the way to go skiing) up to Seven Springs, PA, and then back home; Staunton, VA (stopped for gas en route to a golf weekend) down to Clifton Forge and then back up to New Market three days later; New Market, VA (stopped for gas on the way home from the same trip) to home.

If I drive part highway and part city, the mileage drops off big-time when I leave the highway.

Steady state cruise at 110kph-120kph with AC off I get 6L/100km, which works out around 39mpg at around 70mph. Too bad it's not like this around town.

Well I guess if you can set a cruise to one speed and leave it your fine. But here in SoCal with all the traffic, hills, slow hybrid drivers, hippies........you can't drive at one speed in my opinion. I bounce in-between those speeds quite often. I guess I could be one of the slow ones and go the speed limit and get better mileage, but I just can't bring myself to do that. It really bothers me when alot of cars pass me.

Great MPG's...

I made the trip from Richmond, VA to Charlotte, NC a couple of months ago, 70mph cruise the whole way... 4hrs 15min @ 32MPG.

Decided to take it "easy" like an old man on the way home and kept the cruise at 63, 4hrs 45min and got 36MPG!!! It killed me to have the little ol lady flipping me off in the 70mph zone but I did it. No traffic and pretty flat. Completely happy with that. My around town is avg 24MPG.

you could get even better gas milage if you turn off the engine and leave it in neutral while going down hill. I wouldnt recommend anyone doing it though. My uncle from austria told me that he did that back in the day to save on gas.

Ye city mileage is terrible, around 15mpg if its constant stop and go, if there is coasting involved I can manage to get 19 :/ ... welcome to city life!

Well just took a 800 mile trip. Going down I averaged about 73 mph and got 32 MPG, on the way back I was doing 80 mph and averaged 28. The car is filthy, so that doesn't help, but not bad at all.

i think it was like 23 or 24 going up the mountain.... thats because i already had a highway trip going there.

I live in MD and went to Massanutten VA ... up the mountain.

I'm still on that tank of gas right now.

I filled up at Massanutten, and drove to Southern MD on Sunday. I have driven to and from work in DC everyday this week, and to the golf course a couple times after work this week too and still have a quarter tank left. I'm at about 300 or so miles. Avg. is abut 27 or 28 right now.

I average a little better then 400 MPT with my daily driving. On a long trip, I can easily get over 500 MPT.

When my gas light goes on, I have only gone about 270-280 miles...Most of my driving is in traffic, but that is crazy!

I average 26-27 MPG for daily driving and 30-33 on Distances. I always fill my tank to till it is completely full, It drives me nuts to have it only filled to the first shut off. I feel I am getting robed.

went around the island yesterday. it's a 5 hours trip, roughly 250 miles of which 1/4 of it was on cruise control (65mph) got around 26 mpg. unlike the mainland we can't go 80+mph. guaranteed you'll wake up the cops.

Driving habits play a big factor in the fuel economy. I have done quite a few mods to the car. Check out the sig below. The cats made a big difference in the fuel economy.

wow! that's a pretty impressive line up there. some of the mods you did i'm actually about to do very very soon...could you clarify a few of the mods for me?

1) what exactly does the E-shift procats do?
2) what is the honda accord key mod (laser cut?)
3) how long did the short shift install take?

Thanks again for all the advice and info...it's been really helpful!
