3rd Gear 100MPH!

After reading the "RPM Rule" thread

http://www.acura-tl.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76145

I became inspired to get on my 1500 mile old TL. I was driving in SS mode while getting on to the George Bush Tollway in the Dallas area. I was paying attention to the road and the RPM's when I neared the top of the RPM range in 3rd gear I quickly glanced at the speedo....I was over 100 MPH in third gear! Which was plenty fast enough for me in rush hour traffic.

I have been driving Auto tranny's for the past 15 years (without the benefit of SS) is it me or is 100MPH in third gear friggin awesome!

Rattle, schmattle I love this car!

Cool

If we talk about RPM vs. speed, in 3rd gear, IMHO, I believe

MPH 73-76@vtec point
MPH 100@6200-6400 RPM
MPH 110@redline

Really fast in such rush hour. :cop:

A new Kawasaki ZX-10 hits 102 mph at redline in first gear. This is best done on a race track.

Having said that, I'm trying to decide between buying an '04 TL or getting a WRX plus a new motorcycle. Tough choice.

We're talking about passenger sedans, though. That's like saying a Formula 1 race car does XXX mph at XXX gear, which is comparing apples to oranges.

If you are considering a bike, you should definitely get the WRX + the motorbike. Lots more fun, but you won't be riding in style like you would be in the TL!

Exclamation Motoracer

You might as well, WRX + the motorbike + LIFE INSURANCE policy.

You maybe a good driver but there are alot of shitty ones on the road. Many of them blabbing with one hand on the steering wheel and the other on their cell phone.

Both comments appreciated. I've been riding bikes on the street for 20 years with no mishaps (knock wood); I think racing makes me a much more cautious street rider. My poor old '96 CBR900 requires 2nd gear for 100 mph (just barely), but I probably open the throttle all the way about dozen times year year at best. For me, real performance in a car is what happens 90% of the time it's driven, not 10%.

The WRX + $10K leftover versus TL has not been resolved. I'm replacing a GS300 which was definitely riding in style. Having read lots of postings here, I'm wondering if I go cheap (WRX) for now, and re-consider the TL after another model year.

WOW! BFD! My 1986 Mustang GT did better than that - 16 model years ago (5 speed manual)!

I bet my new V6/EX/V6 Accord will also top 100 MPH in 3rd.

You need to tell this guy that. He's the one who thinks 100 MPH in 3rd gear is a big deal:
