3G TL Type S Appreciating in Value!

I can't believe that the 07/08 TL Type S is actually appreciating in value, especially in this economy. I bought my 07 Type S used with 10k miles on it last year for $26.5K. I now see this car with multiple listings on sites like eBay and KBB selling for $27-29k with more mileage on them.

In comparison, I've also watched the 07 BMW 335i Sport go drastically down in value.

You can now buy a loaded 07 BMW 335i for the same or less money than an 07 TL Type S.

I guess we have the 4G TL less than desireable styling to thank for this.

Anyone else notice this trend?

I can related to this phenomenon since car new sales are lagging and the used car market is drying up. This happened in past recessions and caused used car prices to increase.

I just did a search for all 3rd gen TLs 2004-2008 and got just two hits within 200 miles of my zipcode of 92009. I used www.autotrader.com and ebay for this search that use to have tons of TLs when I bought mine new in 2006. The two hits were 2004 auto/nav models 50+ miles away going for $20,000 +/- 500. having a minimum of 33k miles with the highest being 45K miles. I would say the 3rd gen TL market is drying up from a private party or dealer advertising perspective anyway. Low supply will cause prices to increase.

It makes a lot of sense for the Type-S to appreciate as described since it was only made for 2 years. Perhaps the 2010 V6-TSX and 6MT/AWD TL will stimulate some trade-in activity, but I doubt it will be much.

^ I was mostly interested in the fact that there are so few vehicles available in such a larger metropolitan area.

My guess is that sales prices are firming up so the actual sales price will be much closer to ask price than when there is a glut of used cars available. I'm not a dealer and this thought is just speculation on my part. I did read a few days ago about someone trying to get an 08 type-S for 32K and couldn't get a deal done so the dealers appear to know they have the upper hand on negotiation.

Also, the economy and car buying market was a lot different this time last year. There were also a lot of incentives from Honda to sell 3G TLs around the time the 4G came out. A dealer could sell it to you for cheaper since Honda was giving out a $3000 incentive.

Yea most of the 335i's have 30-40k miles on them and people probably fear the high maintenance once the warranty runs out. Man if I were buying a used car now, I definately wouldn't be getting a TLS, since its now in the price range of a used Lexus IS350, BMW 335i and more money than a used G37. Good for us owners, bad for those thinking of buying.

Compared to Acura, BMWs have always had crappy resale value. It's 'cause once the warranties run out, nobody wants to throw money into the black hole of BMW maintenance. (Actually, pretty much everybody has crappy resale value compared to Acura. )

And yeah, the fact that 1) the economy is in the stinker, 2) nobody wants the 4G TL and, 3) the 3G TL-S was only made for two years is creating quite a demand for these sexy beasts.

Last year I bought my 05 TL 6MT for $16,000 with 30k at Manheim auto auction. Right now, the same car is selling for about $500-$1000 MORE!!

Whats the rarest color produced on the 07/08 Type S? I do know that KBP is the only color exclusive to the type S which is pretty cool.

KBP is exclusive to the type S? Is the non-S black actually black and not KBP?

Im sorry we must be talking about different colors here. Kinetic Blue Pearl (KBP) is exclusive to the 07/08 Type S and is not available on the base TL.
As for Nighthawk Black Pearl (NBP) that color has been available on every single Honda and Acura since the stone age so NBP is hardly rare.

Moroccan Red Pearl is by far the rarest.

It all comes down to supply vs. demand......Some used cars have popped in price over the past few months, such as the 2006 Infiniti M35x.

The M35x was going for under $20,000 at auction in January 2009. The same car now goes for $23,000 at auction.

Very true Gene! It's a true conversation piece.

I love both the Red and the Blue! I'm always amazed when I see either.

I have definitely run into this phenomenon! Dealers not really willing to negotiate down at all... my timing couldn't be worse... Murphy's law!!!

Those are all great alternatives, but the TL beats them all if you need a back usable back seat.

I shopped a pre-owned BMW 330Ci with ZHP package before I got my TL S, and the thought of a $1000 brake job scared me away.

Bingo!

I have been in the market for a TL or maybe an RL and have shopped my A$$ off. The dealers are asking a LOT for hte TLs, and are not really n egotiationg m uch.

I looked at a 2008 base w/nav. 11k miles. it was a loaner car. CPO. they wanted $28k. that car sold NEW for probably $29-30k MAX when all the incentives were going.

I found a couple 2008 TL-S models. 12k miles. dealer wanted $34k. I offered $28k and they didn't even want to go in and talk abou tpricing. they flat out said they wouldnt' even go back to talk about buying/pricing unless I wanted to pay $32k+.

I KNOW for a fact tha t09 TL-S were selling for 31500 - 32000 in 2008. I almost bought one and had offers to buy them in writing at tha tprice..now they want the same price fo ra used car with 12k miles. freakin BS. but if some schmuck sucker pays it, they will hold out for the sucker...

I'd love to ge ta 3G TL..but the asking prices are high and SO are hte prices they will take.

I looked at a 2006 RL. CPO with 30k miles. they wanted $27k + TTL. seemed kind of high for a car that never sold well.....

i think a lot of people are buying their cars off the leases and NTO turnign them back in and the used car supply is less. plus with less people buying period, maybe the dealers are trying to get more money off each sale?

werid thing is there are ajor incentives on the 09 TLs. you can BUY a new 2009 TL w/tech for $33800. they want more than that for the used Type S!!! unbelievable.

honestly, the new TL is not that bad. i hated it initially, but after having one as a loaner, I would MUCH prefer an 09 over an 08. Type S or not. once you have one in your garage, drie it around, and enjoy it, you get used to it and th styling grows on you. i originally hated it, now i thin it looks slick.

in another year or two the 3G is just gonna look dated / played out and the new 4G will be well receive.d trust me, it grows on you.. i'm not bashing the 3G..just sayin that in time, ,the 4G will be "accpted" and people will warm up to it and new styling. it's controversal and bold...but it will grow on people.

it's really room ytoo.

Thats good to know that our tl-s' are worth more than used bmw's. I was actually thinking of getting rid of mine and looking for something different but know this makes me rethink things. Guess I should hold on to it.

Also Audioholics, how do you know only 2000 KBP were built, do you have numbers on the other colours and options as well?

lol I have also noticed this trend. A local Acura delaership is selling an 05 WDP non-nav with 38k miles for 21k....I was like WTF...that seemed like a lot even though the miles might be on the lower side it does not have Nav but there really isn't that many for sale right now

I also have ONLY seen like 2-3 4G TLs and we are in mid July 2009. I have 100 mile roundtrip commute each day to work so you would expect to see more....whats going on with these 09s?? Is no one buying them or what? I guess that does help us 3G TL owners though so I'm not complaining.
