I've driven 6 speed manuals for years, they're great, less parts wearing out, and you'll never be able to program a computer to be able to "see" what is on the road ahead and know that an upshift is going to be followed by a downshift in a few seconds.

However, for the mundane tasks of driving it can get annoying trying to get a drink of coffee or answer the phone in traffic... back in the day when I was dealing with traffic two hours a day I contemplated putting a pneumatic air cylinder on the clutch pedal and a button on the shift lever... instead I just learned how to get the RPMs right and shift without using the clutch. It's pretty easy on the upshifts, a little trickier on the downshifts, but now I only use the clutch when I'm starting from a dead stop about 70% of the time.
it annoys me when people complain about the clutch being too much work. I don't buy it. In 10+ years of driving manual cars, it's never bothered me, even in some of the shittiest traffic. It's one thing if someone has a knee problem. Otherwise it's just being lazy.

Fuck, before all the distracted driving laws, I used to hold the phone with my right hand, shift with my left hand, while also picking up and putting down my coffee with the left hand, all while holding the steering wheel with my knees. Those were the days.

Nope, because the law doesn't let me do that in the Datsun. Those were the civic/accord days. And plus, no coffee in the Datsun!!

Faster? Sure. Butt who cares.

Smoother? Have you driven a DCT at low speeds? I wouldn't call them smooth by any stretch. Clunk. Clunk.

More efficient? Sure, if the computer is shifting for you. Otherwise they're both user based, so why would it be more efficient?

My next car will probably be automatic. I'd still keep a 2nd car with Manuel though for when I need that kinda thrill.
I've been driving stick for 22 years now...with a total of 7 months with an automatic among 2 vehicles.

The thing is... flying cars won't even have transmissions. I mean, who needs gears when you're flying, amirite?

I heard that manufacturers are just trying to figure out how to build flux capacitors for a reasonable price. Once they figure that out, everyone will be flying. Pun intended.

I just can't wait to have a car that can drive itself so I can do more important stuff. Like getting caught up on watching the Harry Potter movies.

man... classic datsuns go for a fortune here... I found a 260z in half decent shape but doesn't run... asking $6500!

There's a 280z that doesn't run either and has a lot of rust... asking $6000, firm!

Dude...people already don't watch the road in regular cars that don't drive themselves (maybe people texting and driving didn't get the memo)?

They don't get the memo. You need to TXT it to them.
