If you are thinking of the Rockies (i.e. Bamph and Jasper), the best time is June and into late September as the leaves change...the latter is just breath-taking with the vibrant fall colors. Mind you, the mountains are breath-taking regardless but that autumn crispness and beauty is hard to beat.

Love the mountains. And driving is great up there.

And yes, winters here are back-breaking but if you like skiing, it's manageable before January-February hits. If you like winter sports, I recommend late November or mid-March for your visits. Also breath-taking.
