3G Gas mileage

I've searched but didn't find a definite answer, so sorry if this is a repost.

I've been getting an average of 14MPG in city driving, and noticed that the tank empties out relatively quickly even though I usually drive around 10 miles a day tops. I wouldn't say I have a heavy foot, TPMS reads 35 psi all around when tires are warmed up. Are there any other factors affecting gas mileage? I mostly drive in stop n go traffic but I didnt expect 14MPG, especially since my dad's Azera is getting 19 in pretty much the same conditions.

Cold weather, car sitting outside, short distances all can contribute to poor mileage, but as been said before, fill it up and mark down the mileage. After driving, fill it up, then divide the miles driven by the gallons used (needed to refill the tank), and see what the MPG reads, unless you've already done this.

Sounds like a plan, thanks.

I think the major contributing factor is short distances, there are a lot of stop signs and traffic lights around here but 14 MPG seems abnormal even for these conditions. Could it be a mechanical problem? Maybe a trip to the dealer will yield more info .

I average 24+ (not over 24.5) for my work commute (through a residential section of a small city) with the tires I currently have on my '04 TL (Michelin Pilot Sport A/S). When the car had the factory OEM EL42's, in the summer, I averaged around 26.5 with a best of 27.98 for a week of commuting through the same city. Best on a road trip with the A/C running the entire time was 33.94.

Keep in mind that your mileage will be less in the colder months than in the warmer ones.

I just tested my gas mileage out on a long trip using cruise control.

29mpg hwy going 80mph.
33mpg hwy going 65mpg.
In the city I vary from high teens to low 20's.

Not bad for a V6 sport sedan. It's no hybrid but it's also not a hybrid in terms of performance.

I'm averaging 15mpg in my 07 TL-S too. I'm not too heavy footed but my typical day involves 3-4 trips 1.5 miles each, in traffic or city streets.
My previous TSX was getting 18mpg under the same conditions, so I would say that the TL-S gas mileage is not so bad.

I can only imagine what I would get in a g35 or a 3 series

I'm in the same situation, 3 trips of about 1.5 miles each day through numerous stop lights and stop signs. I'm guessing this is the main culprit.

Sounds like the drivers getting 14MPG are stopped at a lot at lights, or idling for long periods of time. Anytime you're stopped you're getting ZERO mpg. Besides calculating gas mileage quite well, the MID calculates average speed too. My guess is the people with poor mileage have a very low average speed. I bet that this average speed is around 15MPH or even less.

I have a mostly urban commute to work each day about 7 miles each way and about a dozen lights to get through. My average speed is usually 25MPH and I consistently get 18-21 in those conditions.

That sounds about right, my trip computer reads 14 MPG and 14 MPH. I was just afraid that there was a technical problem behind this.

I average 18 mpg consistently with a mix of city/hwy (70%/30%). I'm about to take a trip down south to LA from the Bay Area next week for a wedding. I'm excited to see what I get on a full tank cruising between 70-85 mph.

yo chaunger, careful on driving highway 5, my dad got pull over twice going back and forth going at 75mph, which is pretty dumb, all the cops do is drive there gay ass camero, eating there fat juicy donuts, pulling people over just by driving 5mph above the speed limit.

i sometime can pull a 23 per gallon if i drive 65mph at the free way haha

Thanks for the heads up! I went to UCI for undergrad and drove back up to the bay quite a bit (it's where I grew up) so i'm quite aware of those pricks. So far in the 10 years i've driven the 5, i've only got 1 ticket *knocks on wood*.

Perhaps you are right. During school days I drive mainly around the campus and only few miles on freeways at the weekend. The trip computer report are the followings:
AVG MPG: 12
AVG MPH: 9
DIST: 156
TIME: 16:03

However, when I drive AVG MPH 55-58 on freeways my MPG jump to 28-30 I guess we should drive faster

Depends dude,

I've notice that my TL-S can average above 30 mpg if I drove it for hours and around 80 mph. I can make a one-way trip from LA downtown to San Jose downtown in a full tank.

I guess TL-S was designed to run a high speed and less braking.

In SJ, I average around 24 to 26 mpg. Mostly Freeway, but with a lot of breaking.

By the way, I have nitro in all wheels, and their are 35 psi when cold, after driving around it'll go up to 38 psi or 40 psi depends on the weather.

This is kind of reassuring. I thought there was something wrong with my car. My commute is 4 miles round trip, lots of lights and stop signs. Maybe I put on 5-6 miles a day on the car...if that. I usually get between 13-16 mpg. But as mentioned above, my AVG MPH is between 15-18. I'm not very heavy footed, but when I do get on the highway for that 3/8 of a mile, I gun it. It's my thrilling moment of the day...lol

how many miles on your TL? Its best to have 35 COLD psi and about 38 PSI HOT. Fill them up and see if it helps. Also have you ever changed the engine air filter (if you are close to 30, 60 or 90K) What oil do you use? Brand/type of gas?

I get 18-20mpg city with a heavy foot and 26-28 on the highway.

Clean air filter always, just cleaned it again like 2 weeks ago.

32 psi in my tires, could probably bump that up a bit and get an extra mpg or two.

i'd have to say that people that are getting low mpg's are the ones with short trips between lights. my daily commute is about 17 each way to work and about 70% of it is cruising at a constant speed, and i typically get 23.5mpg city between tank fillups. on the highway with little slow down, i get about 28.5mpg or more...i love my TL!

I think we need to look at the term "city". Driving in the suburbs of NYC where I live (western Nassau), I consider that "city". I have a light or stop sign every block which is probably like 100 - 300 yards. The term "city" might also be used for a suburb in another area where while it is densly populated and you're not driving on the highway, there are some long stretches to get above like 40 mph.

I get 200 miles on a full tank everytime!! BULLSHITT!! A few of my friends have the same car they get an easy 250-300+ on a full tank. We all do the same type/amount of driving (city & highway). Im not sure what wrong with my car but there is defenitly somthing wrong. The dealer is blaming my CAI for the gas mileage. They said if I take it off they can run tests. If they dont find anything they cant do anything about it. So much for warranty huh? oh ya, no lead foot here ladies N gents.

Yea I was thinking about filling the tires up a little more. I'm filling up with 91 octane, brand is 76. I'm not sure about the air filter and oil but I'm looking to get those changed by this weekend, as I just got this car about a month ago (at 45k miles currently). What oil do you guys recommend?

I usually get 300 city driving and thats when the gas light just got on. I got a 6mt. Tires are about 40psi aftermarket 19s. Usually around town I cruise around 40mph in sixth gear and its just a lil above idle. I usually dont stop fully at lights so I keep on rolling wastes less gas =D. Yea I sometimes drive like a grandpa but it works.

mglax13, good point about "city" terminology. Posting average speed as well as fuel economy would be more useful here, as others have suggested. I routinely get 30mpg+ on the highway, but mpg drops like a rock with any kind of stop and go/low speed driving in my '04 with auto tranny. City driving absolutely kills mpg with an automatic. The engine wastes fuel driving the transmission any time the torque converter is not locked up, which is in gears 1-3. Gears 4-5 have lockup, at which time it's about as efficient as a manual transmission. I too drive like a grampa often during the week, simply because the traffic on my commute doesn't allow me many opportunities to have "fun" with my TL. Might as well save fuel when I can't have fun...

Funny we got the same choices .... except my 07 gets 25 & my 00 TL got around 28 .... no complaint from me whatsoever ...

The OP lives in Arcadia, which has wide, open streets (I live nearby). If he drives like 90% of the rest of the people in this area, then there is a lot of fast accelerating away from stoplights. That's probably where most of the dismal gas mileage is coming from. Hard acceleration and deceleration contribute to increased consumption.

Yeah...I was working on my car's system once and had the car idling for an hour in the driveway. The calculated MPG almost made me jump off a bridge. Only after I reset it and jumped on the highway for a cruise control drive at 65 did I feel better (MPG jumped up to 33 on the display)!

Lol...it's all in my head...I just figure as long as I get between 250 and 300 (which is what I was getting in my RSX with 2 less gallons) I'm happy.

Not like my gf's 08 accord coupe. Given, it's 4 cylinder, but she pushes 400 miles per tank. Funny though, she says anytime my right foot makes contact with her gas pedal...she only gets 330. Lol. And I FEEL like I'm driving it relaxed too!

Back in LA, If I drove mostly local with lots of traffic lights and stop sign, my 07 TL-s manage to get around 250 to 260 per full tank. I hardly use freeway during workdays because my apartment to office has no direct freeway, therefore, I drove local.

Now, that I've moved to SJ, doing around over 50% freeway, therefore, my full tank went to up 280 per full tank

That's a wrong assumption, the AVG MPG shown on MID is actually accumulative, same with AVG MPH, if you reset it of course would shown that goes up.

Also, Accord Coupe is lighter than TL, sure she could get 400...

seems like people from nyc are getting bad gas mileage. I average low-mid teens on local driving. highway, avg 30-32 after resetting MID.
