3700 miles, and just got into a car accident

If anyone is from NYC, it was around the southern state. My question is this: does the TL come with a type of black box that records/monitors what the vehicle is doing (such as engine rpm, brake pressure, etc).

There are numerous threads on this topic. The short answer to your question is .

Check out this thread. You can also do a search for terms like "accident" or "recorder".

Sorry to hear about your accident, I hope it works out ok for you.

more than likely... since it does not record what the OTHER car was doing.

I thought the unit only keeps the last 15 driving seconds of data so if you drive the car for more than 15 seconds after the accident, your data is overwritten with new data. If a registered accident (airbag deployment) happens, it keeps the data to the point of deployment and a fraction of a second after from what I heard.

I heard that is what happens but I cannot verify it.

What exactly happened?

The EDR (Event Data Recorder) to my knowledge is recording in a constant loop, and stops upon airbag deployment - recording the last few seconds (10-15) before the deployment. Unless your accident involved another car and/or someone was seriously injured, I doubt the EDR will be used either way.

I don’t know if EDR data is yet admissible in court. I would look into that first. I know it is not in some states.

It is used in court for some states.
Did you drive the car after the accident? Did the airbags deploy?
If the airbags deployed, get a lawyer to have the dealer download the EDR data so it may be used as evidence in a case if the guy that rear ended you lies.
If your bags did not deploy and you have driven the car, I think your data is gone.

Find out if the person in front of you says they were hit once or twice. They should say once, which will go a long way with the insurance companies. If you were stopped behind them, they should have only felt one impact when you got rear-ended and knocked into them. Of course, if you were hit more than once, then they may have also felt more than one impact.

Depending on how bad your car is and what your thoughts on keeping a repaired car, if you plan on dumping it do it fast as soon as it gets repaired and before CARFAX has the accident logged. Myself and others have gotten screwed by improper reporting in CARFAX and then your resale value is toast.

The insurance company for the car in the back will ask you which way did your head whip first (back or forward) and which way did it whip on the second impact (back or forward). If you say forward on first impact and then back on the second impact then you hit the guy in front and then was rear ended. If you say the other way then you were rear ended first and then hit the guy in front. The insurance company will probably ask you this while recording to try to make you responsible for the damage to all forward vehicles. They tried to do that to my wife but our lawyer put a stop to the trap questions they were trying to set her up with.

So remember, Back first and then forward.
