3 Remotes Possible?

I recently gotten my TL and it is a shared car. There are three drivers in my house including me. I know that the TL comes standard with only 2 memory seats and that cannot be changed. However, we thought it would be more convienient to have a remote for each individual hence we needed a third remoate. So we went to the dealer to get one seperately after we had gotten the car. We did not bring our 2 original remotes which had already been programmed when we first got our vehicle. So the dealer just soley programmed our third remote but that night when I tried to use the other two remotes with the TL, there was no response. I could not lock/unlock the doors or anything. The next day we had to bring it back to the dealer and they told us that we coudln't fit 3 remotes even if we didn't mind the third remote not having the memory seat. So I am wondering, is my dealer incompetant or is it not possible to have a third remote soley just for unlocking/locking the door.

Why couldn't two of the remotes have identical radio signals? So they would both be detected by your car as "Remote #2" for instance.

You can have a third remote. Since there are only two remotes available, Memory 1 and Memory 2, then two of the remotes you have will operate the same memory position, but if all you want is to lock and unlock the doors, then this shouldn't be a problem.

Following are the procedures for programming the remote transmitters. Notice that I have highlighted the part that says that three remotes can be stored. You can do these procedures yourself and bypass the incompetent dealer.

REMOTE TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING

Storing transmitter codes.
The codes of up to three transmitters can be stored into the keyless receiver unit memory. (If a fourth code is stored, the code which was first input will be erased.)

NOTE: It is important to maintain the time limits between the steps. Make sure the doors, the hood and the trunk lid are closed.

1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II)

2. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

3. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

4. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch ON (II).

5. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

6. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

7. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch ON (II).

8. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

9. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

10. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch ON (II).

11. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

12. Confirm you can hear the sound of the door lock actuators within 1 to 4 seconds, then push the transmitter lock or unlock button again, or the code will not be stored.

13. Within 10 seconds, aim the transmitter (up to two additional ones) whose codes you want to store in the keyless receiver, and press the transmitter lock or unlock buttons. Confirm that you can hear the sound of the door lock actuators after each transmitter code is stored.

14. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and remove the key.

15. Confirm proper operation with the transmitters.

NOTE: Once the programming mode is entered, the remote button must be pressed a second time. If the button is not pressed, or if the ignition switch is turned OFF, the programming for all remotes will be cancelled.

I started writing my reply before your input but it took a little longer to compose. Of course, you are absolutely correct and that is the end result of programming the third remote. The only variation available is if you use the keyfob with memory 1 or the one with memory 2, but the final outcome will be two remotes with identical radio signals.

Tnank you for your help, I am going to go try it soon. Just a few clarifications. The keyless reciever unit, when you say behind the dashboard on the driver's side, is it the side near the windshield? Secondly, how do i determine which two remotes to share the same radio signal and share the same memory seat. For example, if I wanted two remotes to be linked to memory seat 1.
Thanks a lot for your help.

I do not understand that last part of the process. Would it be possible to elaborate a bit? Thanks

Yes it did come with a valet key. In addition we actually bought a few extra keys. My parents like to do that, I dunno why considering the price of one key is pretty expensive. At least the price the dealer charged. =(

The remote determines which ones share the same radio signal. Look on the back of the keyfob and it will say either memory 1 or memory 2, so all memory 1 will share the same signal, and all memory 2 will share the same signal. So it just depends what the third remote says on the back.

This means if you don’t keep pressing buttons then the transmitter will end the programming state and you will lose everything you did. So you have to keep doing everything within the time limits specified, and follow the steps in the programming procedure exactly for each remote.

The instructions for programming look difficult, but read them over a few times, and then the only thing you have to remember is to do the steps in less than 4 seconds, except for the one that says you have up to 10 seconds. It may take you a few tries, but you can get it done.

The receiver unit is between the dashboard and the windshield on the driver’s side.
