258 hp or 270 hp ?
Both are right...sorta.
I had an '04 TL and it was 270hp
But in an effort to standardize how HP is measured...Enter the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers)
It is the same 3.2L engine, but now it is 258 SAE hp.
That is where the confusion comes in. I'm not sure when this exactly happened and when things were re-rated.

lol look...
its the same engine from 04-08 for base tl's. the hp did not change, only the method that is used to rate the engine ouput. in 2004 the tl was rated at 270, in 2007 it was rated at 258. no year puts out more hp for the base model.

old numbers 270hp
new numbers 258hp
in 2005-6 they started with a more stringent hp rating....and that is why for a lot of engines, the HP figures decreased but some engines actually increased in HP (I believe that they were underrated to begin with)
on the 02 CLS it was 208WHP with 260 crank hp for a loss of 52hp due to driveline
if you use a 20% loss for the AT then the newer (04-06)TL put down 216hp with the AT (they use the SAME AT as the 01-03 cars) with 270crank HP

To the wheels is about 211 to 220 HP. Honda's and Acuras lost alot of HP on the SAE correction scale compared to some other manufacturers for example Infiniti. It basically states that Honda/Acura over inflated their numbers to begin with. I love when I see ads for 2004 TL's, that say don't buy 2005 and up TL's because they have less power
Also, the bigger size in wheels definitely loses more HP. Rotational Mass in some estimates is given a proportion of 1:10 vs. Static Mass.
Meaning, if your wheels weigh an extra 5 lbs. each, thats a total of 20lbs (5x4) of rotational mass which is equivilant to carrying a 200 lb. (20x10) passenger at all times.
I notice a huge improvment in pickup when I throw my 17's back on from my 19's. Night and day. The bigger the wheel the more power loss.

Just like a car from the 60's. If it was 300 hp at the time, go with it. Forget Gross/Net and all the revisions
I agree with Ken here ... 270 sounds better than 258, period ... besides, who really knows the ins & outs minus the AZ crowd here ?
Not that it matters to me because that 258 - 270 HP was history for mine a while ago, but I wish whoever is incharge of the numbers would make up their mind. I can't tell you how many of my old customers would get me with this question all the time.
The 5AT lays down ~210 and the 6MT lays down ~222. That equates to parasitic losses of 18.5% and 14% respectively, when using the true crank figure of 258. That is far from horrible.
I think the new ones are heavier. A base 08 is ~3600 pounds while a base 04 is ~3400 pounds. So despite same hp, the older ones should be slightly faster.

Pre-Cat deletes and Jpipe adds about 30 WHP. CAI and Pulley adds 10WHP. Catback Exhaust adds 10WHP. Supercharger adds 40-50 WHP. 300WHP is like the goal for all TL's. The turbo charger than is in performance section is trying to get at least 350WHP on itself I think
Lmaooooo okkkay dude that's pretty bad actually 270hp supposivly engine produding 200 hp is fuckin shitt but ok if u think that's not horrible that's ok
Well i thought the 04-05's put out 433hp and the 06-08s put out around 450Dude if you honestly want to know, just pay the $100bucks or so and go to a dyno. Honestly its just a rating. I can tell you that not every single 04 TL will make 270hp, Some will be a bit more or a bit less. I had an 97 Trans am WS6 that was rated at 305hp/325lbs at the crank. I put down in stock form 294/335 to the wheels shortly after i bought it. It was a factory freak i say. Still have the dyno sheets somwhere...I know some compaines underate there motors...
