2007 TL TypeS traded in

On January 30th I traded my 2007 MRP TL Type S for a 2021 Apex Blue Pearl TLX with the Technology and A-Spec packages. Norris Acura in Ellicott City, Maryland, gave me $4000 for the car. You may be able to buy the car "as is" for a good price. It had close to 174,500 miles on it and still ran very well. The only mechanical issue was a leaking oil pump. The dash started cracking last year. Two lights around the navigation screen are out but a full set of replacement bulbs were put in the trunk. One fog light was burnt out. The paint looked very good; there is a silver dollar sized spot on the right rear wheel well. The full under body kit was installed on the car after I bought it.
Norris Acura will not sell this car to a Maryland resident or anyone that is planning to register the car in Maryland because of the state's inspection program.

How was your overall experience at Norris Acura?
Yeah, Maryland's vehicle inspection can be a pain.

Legend2TL: I would rate my experience with Norris Acura very good. They gave me $4k for my trade-in which was at the top of or over KBB value. They also gave me 12% off of the price of the car. Basically everything I asked for. I complained about then not filling up the fuel tank so the sales manager told me to give him a call the next time I need gas. He just happens to live near my neighborhood. So my only real complaint was NOT letting me make a down payment.

With how close you are to PA, You definitely could have gotten 5-6k outright, but congrats on the new TLX

I think they wanted to make some money back in interest since they gave me 12% off the price plus $750 military discount.

If the approved car loan is simple interest without a prepayment penalty, just pay your down payment and the first monthly payment at the same time?

Exactly.

I've heard that usually you get a good deal by financing all of it (dealer makes bank with financing) and then read ALL the fine print and pay that sucker off quick!

zeta; I'm going to do just that but making the down payment up fron would have reduced the monthly payments since I would be financing less.

Of course.
I always tell my fam: If you purchase out right with a dealer loan and plan to 'trade' a used vehicle, there are three negotiations to be made.
1) Trade in value
2) New car price
3) Finance contract
By the time one makes it to #3, it can make for a long day. At that stage, the Finance 'Wonk' cleverly tries to attempt to make-up for all the 'treasures' given in steps one and two. Like loan insurance, credit-life and disability insurance et al. One guy even tried to scare me into buying an insurance coverage for theft of the car. He naively espoused that it was very quite possible that my car would end up in a shipping container headed for South America! I've experience some very good comedy with some of these types over the years.

Congrats and Good Luck with your car.

Like everyone says, you can get thousands more if you sell it privately. It really isn't that much work to sell or buy a used car from a private party, at least here in FL. I just bought my first used car from a private seller and it took less than an hour in total.

The pandemic doesn't make anything easy these days and makes everything slower. Did you factor in the time required to go to Motor Vehicles, stand in line, and have the title transferred to you?
Dealers take care of all that for trade-ins. In some states, you don't pay tax on the new purchase for the amount you traded in (ie. no tax on $4k in tonto340's deal).

Yes I did factor that in. Here's the breakdown:
10 minutes for the seller to verify my cashier's check and transfer the title over to me.
20 minutes at the DMV to have the title transferred to me and pay the fees. You can make an appointment for the DMV here so you don't have to waste all morning there.
The seller doesn't even have to go to the DMV, so in OP's case, hardly any time will be spent. I think that's worth it for a few grand.

The most time consuming part for me was driving between the sellers house and my house.

Perhaps NJ does things differently,

But sign the title over (as long as it's paid for), sign the bill of sale and verify the check. It is the new owners responsibility to get plates, insurance and the title work updated from DMV.

I didn't want to try and sell my TypeS because I knew it wasn't in perfect shape. The oil pump was leaking which was a $1600 repair. Add in parts and labor to do the timing belt and it's up to $2200. Also the dash started cracking last year. This is a $3000 job to replace or $200 to cover with a Coverlay. Kelly Blue Book trade-in value for my car in good condition is $2475 to $3752. I got $4000 so I'm happy. If anyone other than a Maryland resident wants to buy the car it may still be at Norris Acura in Ellicott City, Maryland. If it isn't there it has gone to auction somewhere else.

Unfortunately due to the condition and age of the vehicle, the dealership will likely wholesale the TL. It will end up at an auction, maybe in PA.

There's also the satisfaction of knowing the car dealer/wholesaler will take responsibility for the next owner's complaints about the car.

If it was an automatic, OP did great trading in.
If it was stick, he left some money on the table, maybe.
Remember the AHC TL cost my buddy $1700 and it was a great start to the project and stick.
And the reason he got it at that price is because Carmax did all the negotiating for him by offering
previous owner only $1000.

Either way, 2021 Apex Aspec TLX is fucking hot and gorgeous and at full max trade in value and 12% off sticker...
OP is a weiner in my book!

oh well that why auction car are cheaper than regular market price, there always risk associate with it. This is why used car lot has "AS IS" clause, meaning no warranty for any defect, and some state will have 30 days - 90 days warranty on the motor and trans and it IF it exceeding certain amount of $$$ and year, anything more than 10 years old will be most like like sold as is. If you not comfortable with buying used car with "as is" may be a CPO would suite you better.

OP claimed its morally wrong to sell the car with defect as described therefore he trade it in, there is nothing wrong with his way of thinking.

ask @nist7 about buying used from a private seller
I noted everything wrong and appropriately discounted based on fair market value.
Main thing was if I did all the necessary work to make it perfect I probably wouldn't
want to sell it.
