Hi Everyone. Came across this 2007 TL Type-S locally and it seems like a decent deal as I was pricing others from the same year and higher mileage. I checked the CarFax history and it has been serviced regularly by an Acura dealer for the majority of its maintenance history except a couple here and there. Some minor damage on the front driver's side lower bumper and curb rash, but other than it looks to be in good shape for its age. Mileage is low so that's usually a good thing, but curious to get your guys' thoughts.

Car looks to be pretty clean. I see some minor wear and tear on the interior, but nothing that can't be fixed with some elbow grease.
I would ask the owner for some history of the vehicle, ie: how many owners, reason for selling, maintenance (see if it lines up with CarFax report), any accidents, smoked in?
If maintenance is well kept, the car's drive should exhibit that. Read up on what to look for when test driving these cars, how the AT tranny behaves and what are some tell tale signs of an abused car.

I wouldn't worry to much about the front fender scuff, it can easily be covered up by the aspec lip (which is a must IMO). Car is very aggressively priced. but I would use the scuff and any other things you find to negotiate if the car is mechanically sound.

And agreed on seeing it in person would be the next step if I choose to proceed. Will need to discuss it with my wife. My current vehicle gets 26-27 MPG with regular gas, so going to Premium and getting lower MPG will be different. I'm not crazy about the black color either since it'll be hot in FL come summer time...and it shows every imperfection!

Not sure how much lower your fuel economy will be; I typically get 27-28 mpg in warmer weather during my day-to-day commute, and I've hit a full tank high of 36 mpg (per the OBC, it was 35.934 according to the miles divided by the gallons method) on a straight highway run of 534.8 miles.

 

Just note that the TL MPG can vary quite a bit depending on your driving style and traffic....from 15-35 I would say are valid. If you are mostly highway commute, expect about the same as you have now. If all city full blown stop and go, expect high teens or low 20s. My TL rarely sees the highway anymore and it usually takes quite a bit of work to get it below 25MPG for an entire tank.

 

I wouldn't buy the TL if your looking for a fuel economy car OP.
The TL is a heavy sedan and requires premium fuel.

 

Just do it and don't look back!

 

Better jump on it before it's gone. Good price for a low mileage TL-S.

Been reading about cracked dashboards in the 3rd gen TLs. Were the 07-08 TL Type-S affected?

 

All 3rd gen have that risk. Just a matter of age, time, care, and environment on when. My '05 cracked at roughly 10 years. Some have sooner...some have yet to crack.

 

So what I hear you saying is that no 3rd gens are immune to dash cracks. Not a matter of "if" but "when."

And from the peripheral reading I've done on the forums. Some have gotten Acura to fix it under warranty (which I know a 12 yo car won't qualify for); some have pseudo-fixed it on there own with sort-of-ok results; and some I guess just live with it. Anywhere from $2-$3K to fix?

You can also buy a new dash and install it yourself, I think I read somewhere on this forum a new dash is roughly $500 (I could be way off on this one).

Then of course you can pay your dealer to do the work; I believe I've seen some folks pay upwards of $1,200 for the part and labor from their dealer.

 

so you worry about the dash crack and skip the mechanical aspect of the car? yes don't expect Acura cover your bill UNLESS you are the OG owner or having that car for a long time (8 years or more) along with lengthy dealer service. Its a $2600 job at the dealer.

FYI other Japanese car at the same era suffer the dash issue also.

03-06 G35 also has crack dash, 07-12 has dash warpage along the air vents and cluster.

06-13 Lexus IS suffer from dash, door panel melt.




If crack dash is your worry then I would recommend skip the TL-S and get your self a TLX-Aspec.

 

Me not saying anything about the mechanical aspect of the car doesn't mean I'm not researching it or "worrying" about it. I'm just bringing up things as I'm researching and reading other owners experience on. I'm sure I'll come across some mechanical issues, but so far they've been sparse regarding tranny and engine. But this dashboard issue stuck out to me as being more widespread. I'm just trying to gauge what are the possible things I'll need to address/live with and what I should expect maintenance wise (tranny 3x3; oil changes, etc) as I have a 4 yo daughter running around

 

The general consensus regarding the 2007 TL Type-S is they are pretty robust mechanically, with the automatic transmission being one of the potential weak points; the 5-Speed automatic appears to be more robust compared to earlier versions of the transmission, but I don't think I've ever heard it referred to as robust or bullet proof.

 

It really depends on the car. My '06 with 140K has a flawless dash with no signs of any cracks. My cupholder slide cover is also not broken like many others.
Just check out the car in person and don't overthink things.

Did you reset the system when you did the oil change? You do understand the car has no way of knowing you did those things; don't you?

 

 

Just drain the oil from the engine and transmission, replace the engine oil filter, and pour in new lubrication. Use any 0W-20 or 5W-20 for the engine, use Honda DW-1 ATF in the transmission if you have an automatic or ACDelco Synchromesh Friction Modified if you have a manual transmission.

 

 

Engine oil is like religion, use whichever brand and sub-type you worship; it will make no difference in the life of the engine. Personally I use Castrol Edge 0W-20 in my 2006 TL with over 150,000 on the clock. Ask ten people, get ten different answers.

 

any 5W-20 work just fine as long as you follow the MID service interval.

I try to tell people all the time brand "X" isn't 10x better than brand "Y" when come to engine oil, just make sure you change your oil along with decent oil filter at service interval and you will be fine.
