Sorry guys for the incomplete post! What I wanted to know was if anyone has any information on if owners of the 04'-06' TL will be able to retofit our cars to use the new 2007 TL Switchblade Key? Will we be able to just by the switchblade key, program it and have the dealer cut it to work? I'd love to do this mod so my key and fob are integrated, instead of having a seperate remote fob and key. The 3rd genration TL should have had this option from the begining!

right now your guess is good as ours. you probably want to wait and ask again when the 2007's hit the street.

i didn't think they would be switch blade key for 2007.
Aren't they only for RDX?

Nope...all Acura models will have the switchblade key (save for the RL, which will have keyless access).

there is a switchblade key on ebay for $44. PRetty cool, but there is no remote functions. I think I will just wait for the 2007 key and see if it will work

Thats one thing I miss from my Passat .. it had the switch blade key .. not only smaller in your pocket but it held the other keys out away from the steering column abd the didn't swing and bang on it.

Here is a similar thread on retrofitting the RDX key: Can the new RDX ignition key work on a TL?

I spoke with the parts guy at Chapman Acura in Tucson and he said he will not know until the car is in their posession. The one promising thing he said is it should be doable if the key is cut on both sides. The new RDX has the same switchblade key and the key itself is only cut on one side so if that is the case we will have to switch out the ignition.

The key is made different you have to swap the whole key cylinder to make it work (in other words...nope). the switchblade key is like and Accord Key which is cut different.

what if we cut the laser cut metal off and welded our original key to it? Can the 07 remote be programmed for 04-06?

Ive seen the keys, the 07 TL keys are much bigger and fatter than the 04-06 keys. I asked them if its possible to have the 07 fob and they looked at me like I was crazy! Then they told me I might have to change out the whole ign, and its not worth doing it for the parts and labor that has to go into it.

On a side note, could someone just cut out the 04-06 key and retrofit it into the 07 fob? I belive that would be the best solution and cheapest way to go about this mod.

Finally found the thread on the accord key mod guys, if you have any questions shoot me a pm on it. i will however not answer questions that are clearly answered in the thread, so read first. Until someone posts ths fcc code on the 07 key I can't research it:

A switchblade key is okay -- I've had a couple of VWs with them. Excellent for fidgeting with while you're walking out to the car. ;-)

What are the chances Acura will introduce the full keyless deal (like on the RL)? For those of you who've been Acura customers for a while, is this the kind of thing they might introduce as a running change during the model year?

We need an 07 owner to post the frequency of the new fobs first to see if they'll work on the 04-06's.

I have looked at the key for the 07, I am not exactly sure yet if I will be able to modify it. I am still waiting for the dealer to be able to order me a key. The parts for the 07 TL's are not available quite yet. Once it is, I will have one, and let everyone know if it can be done.

the rdx key will not work. it is made by valeo (french company) instead of omron. read about it here!

i'm working on this mod, but it's on hold until i figure out if the tl transmitter will be compatible

PROGRAMMING THE REMOTE TRANSMITTER (KEYFOB)

Storing transmitter codes.
The codes of up to three transmitters can be stored into the keyless receiver unit memory. (If a fourth code is stored, the code which was first input will be erased.)

NOTE: It is important to maintain the time limits between the steps. Make sure the doors, the hood and the trunk lid are closed.

1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II)

2. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

3. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

4. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch ON (II).

5. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

6. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

7. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch ON (II).

8. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

9. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch OFF.

10. Within 1 to 4 seconds, turn the ignition switch ON (II).

11. Within 1 to 4 seconds, press the transmitter lock or unlock button with the transmitter aimed at the keyless receiver unit behind the driver’s side of the dashboard.

12. Confirm you can hear the sound of the door lock actuators within 1 to 4 seconds, then push the transmitter lock or unlock button again, or the code will not be stored.

13. Within 10 seconds, aim the transmitter (up to two additional ones) whose codes you want to store in the keyless receiver, and press the transmitter lock or unlock buttons. Confirm that you can hear the sound of the door lock actuators after each transmitter code is stored.

14. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and remove the key.

15. Confirm proper operation with the transmitters.

NOTE: Once the programming mode is entered, the remote button must be pressed a second time. If the button is not pressed, or if the ignition switch is turned OFF, the programming for all remotes will be cancelled.

^^^we have already determined that the transmitters are the same. so programming shouldn't be hard. What the hard part is you have a square that your trying to fit in a round hole. There is no way without modification of the key blank making it the size of a standard key to get it cut. So you need to make the laser blank the exact size of a standard and then get the key cut. You can not cut a standard key to a laser blank. They will ruin an expensive machine, and the key still won't be to spec. So now go find a metal worker to make you a key!

i have already started disassembling the key mechanism. what i plan to do is something similar to the accord key, where the factory key will have to be cut to fit into the housing. i know i can't use the laser-cut blank.

italia.... you were able to program the remote, and everything works? i think i'm going to go ahead and order the transmitter if it has been confirmed that it is programmable.

I know what you were saying, I have the accord key mod. If someone who has got there hands on the key could take it apart and see what the laser cut full blade looks like we could start the process. I plan on just sending it to my dad who is a tool and die maker and have him reproduce it. If it is easy enough for him to do I might have him make a few more for people on here to use/purchase.

Lembowski, I am interested, if your dad can make it... as I am still waitting on the response from the group buy thread (I think you are waitting too ? =) )

seems like this is getting to reality, very excited...

Yeah I have to wait till I can get the key to start off with. My guy said he can't get them yet, wish he could like others have been. Depending on what the "full" blade looks like it could be easy for my dad or difficult. If it is easy I will ask him to make a batch up, but if its hard I'm not going to ask him to spend alot of time on it.

ok so i'm almost done modding the key.... it's MUCH more involved than the accord key mod.

on this key, the plastic cover is actually part of the mechanism that allows it to flip. unfortunately, this plastic is injection molded, like our key, and is all one piece. there is no seam, so i had to actually cut the plastic in half, remove the old key, and insert the modified rsx key. then i had to glue it back together using jbweld (it's still drying right now).

some random pics:

the rdx transmitter, made by valeo. it WILL NOT work! i will have to pick up a tl transmitter which is made by omron.

24 hours to dry ftl then i have to sand the excess jbweld off, and prime/paint the plastic. was all this worth it? probably not.... will i ever do it again? HELL NO!!!!!!!!

whoa, it was that bad huh?

I think I am going to try it once this mod is perfected, I love the new key, I just hope the jb weld holds...

How did you make a clean cut to open it up? exactno knife? blade?
