2006 Acura TL

Hey guys,

Been looking off and on for a yr for a TL. Well I think my wait is up. I found a 2006 TL silver 6 speed manual in great condition with 92000 for 14999. It does have Navi. Do you guys think I should jump on this. BTW I wasnt looking for a 6 speed at all this one just fell in my lap. Let me know if there is anything I should be worried about with the 6 speed.

You got the 105k service coming up. Will cost anywhere between 400-1500. Factor that into your decision on buying this car. Good luck.

you havent given us enough info about the car.

I would have it inspected by a mechanic. A pre-purchase inspection.

Yes I know the major service is coming up. Also the car checks out by my mechanic. The car was a local owner down her in GA and took car of it with. Car has service records and everything. Test drove it and car runs very smooth.

^sounds good.
it seems like you've done your home work on what needs to be done.
no one can decide for you. If you're happy with the car and its price tag, scoop it up!

Most Honda's have problems with 3rd gear; its pretty common for a 3rd gear grind or popout.
we do have a solution for it, without tearing the car apart.
Replace the existing Manual Transmission fluid with GM syncromesh friction modified.

Thanks. Yes homework has been done for toooo long and being in the Atlanta market it is hard to find a TL with good mileage unless I go 07 or 08 and I have even seen some of them with 100000 miles on them. I know if I keep the maintenance up the car should ride for the five years that I am looking to get out of it.

I was in a similar position in December 2010 - ended up buying a 2005 TL 6MT in Anthracite, w/navigation, that had 85,000 miles, for $12,500. The Seller had all service history records, all done at the Acura dealership where he bought the car. This is all in San Francisco. The initial ask was $14,500, but I negotiated the price down for the 105k timing belt service and 50% worn tires. I like to negotiate.

Here were my key items to review, after reading the AZ threads:

- 3rd gear grind
- Torn compliance bushings on 99% of the cars (including mine)
- Dashboard cracking
- Noisy powersteering when cold - TSB
- Hands free link has a moderately high failure rate

Good luck!

Something i would try is have the owner take you out in the TL for a test drive (have her drive) and observe how she operates the manual. That may be an indicator on how much clutch life you have left.

It would be rather unfortunate to have to replace the clutch at 100k or when you do your major service as well.

Is this from a dealer or from a private owner? If it's from a dealer, did they include any warranty? They should at least throw in a free timing belt service if it's a dealer. I had gone out of state twice to get good deals on my cars and it's usually around the end of the month when they need to move inventories.

Yeah, I would definitely be concerned about the clutch. ez12a's suggestion is spot on - have to drive around for a bit and pay attention to her clutch operation; i.e. RPM at stop n go, ask her to downshift a few times, pay attention to whether or not she leaves the clutch pedal in at stop lights, etc.

Mine started to slip around 9x,xxx. I know some people can get 200k, but I personally never beat on my car or raced it. Only thing I can think of that put extra strain on the clutch would be driving in the mountains of Colorado. IIRC, it cost me around 1200+ for the OEM clutch replacement at Acura dealership. I was quoted around 900 for aftermarket at some shops, but figured OEM is the way to go with these things.

Something to consider, that's all.

Thanks for the input. I will ask all these questions and do a few more test drives.
