2005 TL Engine Break in Period

I have done some reading on line about the proper break in methodology and wanted to get other owner’s opinions/knowledge.

I know that driving the car at a constant speed is not good, but the owner’s manual suggests that I should not drive it hard for the first 600 miles. My salesperson advised me that I should drive it “hard” or the way that I would normally drive it (which is hard) because that will give me better gas mileage later on and provide a better break in.

Thoughts/opinions/facts?

My STOCK answer...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are many threads on the proper break-in of your new toy...

Do a search and thee shall be enlightened. Follow your manual and read up as well!

Short story:

- Take it easy on the brakes for a while to "bed" them in correctly (not at the expense of causing an accident however!)
- listen to the MID regarding oil changes... there are TOMES of knowledge on this that can be searched on
- personally, I took it easy on the engine (no hard accelerating, no high rpms) for the first 1000 miles. I am now at 1800 and drive "normally"

(now go.. SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH, READ READ READ) and see you in... 20 hours or so!

I have also done some research about breaking in a car when new and have read some consistent recommendations on the web:

1) vary the engine speed during the 1st 600 miles, avoid full throttle acceleration (up to the redline), and don't drive at a constant speed for a protracted period of time (avoid long highway cruises at a constant speed). Varying the engine speed helps the rings seat better, so there won't be oil leaking past them later on.

2) get an early oil change, say ~ 1000 miles- new cars are built to very tight tolerances, and it is unlikely that there will be any significant 'flash' (extra metal filings from the production process), but a lot of people do this anyway to safeguard the engine.

3) don't nail the brakes, especially for the first 200 miles- hard braking can glaze the friction surfaces, and result in less performance when braking later on.

Other than the above, no specific or special driving habits are needed.

I wouldn't say that... Listen to the MID is the concensus going on here. If you do change early, please read the Road Rage Journals on what to add to the oil. (There is "break in oil" in there to begin with....)

All in all, there are 138540382 posts on oil changes. Please read them and decide what's best for you!

"Follow the MID instructions. There are additives in the oil to assist in the engine break in."

And to quote THE MAN himself... Well, there is simply too much to even begin. Read for yourself here, in the RR Journals...

My research says we have an additive in the oil, so I am leaving mine in for 3000-4000 miles. I am at 2600 miles at the oil is at 60%.

I did not take my car over 100mph for the first 500 miles.

Break In Period

I now own a TL but before that I had a 2003 V6 Honda Accord. I went to a dealer to get the oil changed early (It suggested I think 7500 miles) and I wanted to baby my new car so I though 4K would be preventative enough.

The dealer told me not to change my oil the first time earlier than what was recommended. He explained that the first fill of oil was a "Break In" oil that was different and in order to protect the engine during the break in period. I would imagine it would be the same for the Acura's as well.

More reason for me to get that out of my engine at 1000 miles and replace it with Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. Sythetic will protect a lot better than conventional "break in" oil. I haven't used regular oil in years because it breaks down too quick.

I would seriously read some of the threads on here after doing a search. There are MANY MANY people who go to synthetic, but only after the MID tells them to change their oil for the first time.

Unless you plan on adding the needed break-in additives when you change the oil, I'd leave it in based on the recomendation of MANY MANY people here who are VERY VERY knowledgeable on the subject.
