2004 TL with 329 Demo Miles - 27,499$

Acura of Bklyn,NY

Thats awfully Cheap, kind of brings down the value of the car because when i saw the ad
in the Paper it never mentioned the 329 demo miles. Once i called up and asked about the outregeous price of the new 04 TL,they told me the car has 329 demo miles on it.

My friend who owns a new maxima saw the ad and starting busting my chops about how the TL doesnt hold its value and costs less than a brand new maxima,he didnt know it has 329 miles on it. but big deal, whats 329 miles???

I paid 36,500 with NAV.

Does this car have NAV? Even with 329 miles, that seems low. I would expect that for
non-Nav, that car would be about $1K more.

You're friend wasted his money on a Maxima. If he wanted a fast car he should have got a Nissan 350Z, those hold their value. As for the Maxima, its not even on the top ten list I don't believe. And all the car mags knock it because the Altima is much cheaper and just about as fast.

Did you go in person to check it out or you just called them up? I heard a lot of bad things about Acura of Brooklyn. They probably just wanna get you down there.

this has nothing to do with resale value. the car is listed as a demo car and cannot be sold as new so its being sold as a used car even tho 329 miles is not alot at all. second its an 04 on the lot that the dealer has to move so he would have taken some money off it anyways even if it was new. since its a demo car there have been about 1000+ people getting in and out of it and touching and playing with its gadgets. 100's of test drives where people drive for relatively short periods of time. i think at 27K its a fair price for that car.

My guess is that the car was in a fender-bender. If you can get the VIN, you can stuff it into CarFAX and get the scoop (if there is one).

TL value retention > Maxima value retention

i think someone posted an article with the top 10 cars to hold the most value... the 2004 TL was on there

I would never buy a car with demo miles on it. I drive the hell out of "demo" cars.. I am talking about slamming the brakes, spinning tires, and anything else you can think of. Yes I honestly treat the car like shit, but when I do that it makes me like the car 10x more. If I never drove them like that I would have never purchased my 2002 or 2003 rsx and now the TL I am getting.

Even if the car was in a fender bender...the people in the body shop probably did something under the table so might not show up on car fax

ummmm...I don't think 100s of people have driven a car that only has 300 miles on it. Think about what you're saying.

my view

First off a DEMO car is not a USED car. To be used, the title of the car must have been registered by an owner. I know it's just a technicality, but it's still there. I leased a demo car with many many demo miles, but it didn't qualify as an USED car. Trust me, i did a crap-load of bitching and whining that I should get a better deal on the car.

300+ demo miles does in fact mean 100's of people drove the car. Acura of Peabody uses a 2mile demo loop. I'm sure in Brooklyn, that even with a 30 minute demo ride, the drive can onlly get a 1/2 mile away from the dealership.

Finally, 27.5k for that car is a really low selling price (i'd consider 28.5 to 29k to be a good deal for a non-nav, '04, demo car). The only thing I can assume is they are using bait-and-switch selling tactics.

Bait and switch could mean that the car is $27,500, but you have to pay $1000 for tires, $200 for the body side moldings, and $500 for the spoiler, all of which you may not want.

Bait and Switch - basics

sorry for taking so long to reply, i'm not used to forum with more postings per day than I can read during lunch.

Bait and Switch for car dealers means....
BAIT a customer with an almost unbelievable deal.
When the customer arrives show them the deal car, explain it, but don't let them put any deposit down.

When they want to start the paperwork for buying the car, SWITCH it on them. Tell them it's already sold or otherwise unavailable. Offer them a similar car, albeit for just a few dollars more.

Another method is what the other posters described. The car is advertised at one price, but with add-ons and special fees and so on it comes up several thousand more. But wait, there's another car with those options already on the lot that is only one thousand more. And once again, the dealership keeps the "advertised inexpensive car" as bait for the next customer to come in.

It's harder to prosecute someone on bait and switch tactics vs. outright dishonesty. So eventually they will sell somebody that demo car, at that price. But probably not before getting several people to come in looking at it, but buying a different car.
