I hope they are right, but Acura brochures are stating 270HP and that information has been on their site for months.

Pop. Mech had a piece on the TL stating it would be 3.5L and 280 HP. However, there's a good chance that both Edmunds and Pop. Mech are wrong, given how many times the information in both have been wrong.

Agreed, I just wish we could have something factual. Be it new features or horsepower, just give me something I do not know.

More like back when we started thinking about a 2004 TL

Also I heard the 270 is underrated, I hear its more like 280-285 HP

To me, underrated is like not meeting potential. If it has 283, say 283.

EDmunds says "the TL will most likely get a power boost to somewhere in the neighborhood of 280 horses"

That page on Edmunds looks very preliminary.

Less than 30 days, more like 3 weeks, September issue of magazines get out early so we might get info end of August..

Honda is NOTORIOUS for underrating some of their cars. The new V6 Accord puts out closer to 250 something HP instead of 240. The new TL will probably make about 285 or a bit less.

The 3.2 NSX makes closer to 310 rather than the 290.

I could go on but you get the point.

To quote someone at Honda... "Our horses are healthier"

To me, if you make 300 HP, then say it, don't say 290. It is silly. Insurance companies aren't going to make a big deal over 270 or 283. IMHO

I already have my September issues of Car & Driver and Road & Track - no info there. I am thinking the October issues that come out in September will have the info.

For what it's worth - my dealership said their sales manager is going to a "first drive" meeting this week for the TL and should come back with factual info that he will tell me next week. Has anyone else heard about this "first drive" thing? I have no idea where it is taking place.

They take place all over the country.

I think the magazines cannot share data unless they hit shelves after 9/1/2003.

Lets say it like this, Does it make a difference that Honda claims the car makes 13 more HP? YES IT DOES, and it does to the insurance company too..

280HP in a FWD car. That is crazy. Just thought it would create a lot of understeer.

well it would create understeer, but people say Honda would be the best do it right as they make the best engines, like the new Maxima is 265 HP and it is full of under steer but people say Honda can do alot BETTER

Honda uses equal length half shafts to get rid of 95% of the understeer. Its still there, but its like being in a Lexus LS430 and listening for noise, its there but damn is it ever quiet

The LS430, is an awesome piece of engineering. I am pretty sure with the adjustable suspension, it has a Cd of something like 25 at highway speeds.

Do you mean torque steer or understeer? FWD cars in general will understeer more than RWD ones, regardless of horsepower. Now torque steer is a different animal. But Cadillac's Seville STS has 300HP and is FWD and it doesn't have that bad of torque steer.

I just got a brochure in the mail from Northeast Acura (Albany, NY) and they have a whole page ad for the '04 TL and they list it as having 275HP.

Yes, where is the scan, if it is a whole page, there must be even more info than just HP.

Edmunds has posted 280hp since late June (maybe longer) so do not go by that number.

According to a source directly at Honda, that dealer is wrong and the car will have 270HP and the same torque rating as the current Type-S.

That ad also says you can win "a free $30,000 mile service" and only has pics from the NY Auto Show concept car, so I'm not necessarily giving it much credence.

Well, Caddy is going RWD with all their cars so that tells ya something. The new Maxima with 265 hp has AWFUL torque steer.

I just read that Caddy is going to offer awd in the CTS and then most of the line in '05. They understand that most of us don't live in Southern Cal. and we took to fwd for a reason.

Yep. I was remarking more on the quality of the ad than on the actual intention of that statement (which was pretty obvious).

With the A/T problem reported on the current Type-S, I won't buy another TL with more HP until Acura proven that the A/T in the new TL can handle the additional HP.

I am pretty sure they would have got a whole new Transmission by now..

The tried not to invest too much money and that is why they were still selling new cars with faulty Transmissions, but since they were building a brand new generation and they had the money, so I am pretty sure they would have got a whole new tranny.. Specially if the engine is a 3.4 L

The '04 TL makes 238 ft. pounds of torque and 270 hp.

As for Cadillac, they used a system similar to what the Prelude has/had in the SH model, sending more power to the outside wheels when necessary, making FWD far far better for performance driving.

Where are you getting the 238 number? Will there be more torque on the manual?

AMI Auto World Magazine: '04 TL (Score: 1, Normal) 08-20-2003 22:32

The latest issue states that the new TL has 270 hp and 238 pound-feet of peak torque, as well as drive-by-wire throttle.

280HP VETC sounds real good and shall be enough, otherwise the price will not be the same...hope the new TL-S will below 33K, otherwise, ...
