Just keep an eye on your MID it will let you know when. It will give you a warning at I think 15 or 20%. It varies on your driving conditions

Welcome to Acurazine.

The salesperson was wrong.

The oil is a break-in oil which should be left in for a while. The service department will probably tell you to leave the oil in until the MID calls for service.
Many Acuraziners change it between 4K-5K (at about 50% oil life) and use the same type of oil before switching to synthetic on the change thereafter.

When should I change to synthetic?

First time change...WAIT FOR THE MID.... the first oil has special additives to help the engine break-in better....

I dont understand why people would want to NOT follow the MID and do their own shit...

I couldn't agree more! The owner's manual clearly states to follow the MID. That, in my mind, is advice from the engineers who designed and built the car. I have to believe they know more about what's best for the engine and it's oil life than I do. I have read enough on this topic to feel that MID's are right on the money when it comes time to change oil. They KNOW when your car needs it based on your driving habits and the prevailing ambient conditions you drive in.

IMO, the only thing you should be thinking about is what type of oil you want to use going forward (synthetic or natural and which brand...that's a whole other topic of debate!). The question of when to change it is pretty much covered by the car, and if you follow it, you will never void your warrantee or damage your engine.

The only exceptions would be for guys who:

Continuously drive thier cars excessively hard (IE racing, or always pedal-to-the-metal) or in excessively hot weather (IE Desert).

OR

Drive their cars rarely. (EX: the oil is in the engine for two years because they've only driven 2K miles)

Wow, you must have had a lot of fun driving ur car around. 3300 and 20% left.

I'm at 4k miles and 40% oil life left. I think I need to floor it more often and have more fun with it.

Welcome!
Especially with the complexity of the Nav. system, the FIRST thing you need to do is read the manuals. It states (for a reason) that you should not change your break in oil until the MID tells you it's ready. It has been discussed and proven that Acura (Honda) uses a special oil with more molybdenum.
But I'm sure that the can of worms has been opened, and you will get so many opinions that you'll get a headache.
If you want it to last, I would follow their recommendation.
STILLHERE: You're at 20% at 3,300? Mine shows 70% at virtually the same mileage. You riding that thing hard?

I changed my break-in oil at about 6K and then used the dealer for the first oil change as it was free. My second oil change I had my local shop do the oil change to full synthetic. It cost me only $12 because I provided the oil/filter and washer. Tire rotation was free. Precision Acura wanted $157 for that....I think not, lol. If i'm going to get screwed it will be on my own terms!

You must really baby the car. At 4k, my mid was at 15%. So I took it in to get my oil changed.

I have a habit of changing my oil every 3k. Should I go by the MID? Doesn't really matter since its my car. I'm at 9k miles and had two oil changes. I also take it into the dealer to do all the work.

well I live in NYC... there is alot of stop and go traffic... but when it is time to go... I go...
just ask aSpectl06... He had a really hard time catchin up to me on the highway...

But um, I drive pretty smoothly... but also I am going on 5months without the first oil change... so it is actually 3240 on the dash and the 5th month is just right around the corner... I am pretty sure the mid keeps time in mind hehe

I waited until the MID was down to 15% (6,000 mi in my case) and then I got the oil and filter changed with Mobil-1 synthetic.

I went to a local "express lube type' shop but I watched them and I made sure they put in the right oil.

Good luck with your new car.

I'm at the same as StillHere153 - ~3300 miles and 20% on the MID. Exepct my car is just a tad under 3 months.

I plan to follow the MID. 1st change with Dino Oil, then Synthetic there after.

It's hard not to change the oil at 3,000 miles. It's so ingrained as the "right" way to take care of your car. Everytime I look at the mileage, I want to schedule an oil change.
