Could you describe a little more about this?

If you talk about "thump", "clank" or "flap" like sound in your first drive and reach 10 MPH, it's NORMAL.

Check out Garage section. Thanks.

r u talking about the downshifting? i have a 5at and that happens to meet. around 20 mph when i'm slowing down and i'm half pressing the brake, the car downshifts and it jerks a bit. not really a big deal. i didn't know what was going on and i thought it was the brakes, but then i noticed the rpm going up.

livnforyou,

Does this happen on your 5AT on the plain roads too? No downhills or uphills?

This kid is on a roll. He already racked up 7 posts in this thread, and he has two posts in the 2G forum about his 2004TL. I give him a week before he has more posts than anyone in this thread.

Seriously, though, J2004tl, we don't think you're crazy, but it is hard to feel what you are feeling without being there, so we have to ask a lot of questions so we can give you the best advice possible.

From what I have heard about this problem (drove me nuts also) it is normal. There was a post on here a few weeks ago about this. There were quite a few people who were having the same problem. When you reach about ten miles per hour after letting the car sit for a few minutes you hear/feel a thud in the pedal and in the fron end of the car. My friend has a TSX and has the same feeling. I heard it is from the VSA priming itself. I also took it to the dealer and trhey said they could not duplicate the problem. MY ASS! You feel it everytime you drive the car! I have a friend with another TL and the same problem. I don't think it is anything to worry about once you get over it.

I know what you are talking about and its not normal. My Ody had the same problem after a few K and it ended with a new tranny at 36K. Pester your dealer and the svc department to get it fixed. My klunl was in reverse the car would start to back up just fine and then suddenly jerk strongly with an ominous KLUNK. Unfortunately, like most car gremlins it only happened when it wanted to. By 36 K it had become fairly constant so the dealer could not claim not feeling it.

I truly hope this isn't normal. I have the same sound after coming from reverse to drive and the slowly accelerating and it feels like the whole engine is shifting. I WILL tolerate it making that sound. If it is normal, I'm going to have issues then.

just keep your fingers crossed that your 2nd tranny doesnt have this hard shift from 2nd to 1st under light accel. My TL-S does the same thing, alot when cold (which is perfectly normal) and then after the fluid really heats up, like in LA freeway traffic. Mine's gone out 4x's and is getting bought back. It just so happens that i drive almost 100% freeway miles and have been inadvertantly "lugging" 5th gear, which is what effects the 02-04 TL's the most. There have been at least 5 mods to the 5AT used in the 02-04 TL and each time they tell us it's "fixed".
But let's hope your's clears up on its own.

Ok, I really don't know what J2004TL are talking about, perhaps, it's like vtechbrain & yield2s are saying. Or, it's something related to his 2nd gear.

About that ABS checking-like stuff, I don't want to believe it's normal, either. The best way is to bring your car to Acura dealership and ask them to check for you. If you're having the same symptom as ppl've described (after overnight parking, the thump/clank/flap sound would occur when first reaching 10 MPH), you should bring your car to the dealer in the early morning, get the loaner and ask your dealer to test-drive your car until 2 o'clock in the afternoon. They may be able to replicate this issue again.

Remember, please turn off your autolock feature or don't let it lock the door at 10 MPH.

i think i have an idea of what you are talking about, but i also think this is normal, it is definitely not the abs self check. its when you stop and step back on the gas, there is a jerk(almost seems like the motor has no torque and the torque kicks in.

my cousin has a 2000 accord and it does the same exact thing, so i know it cant be bad, if it was, honda would have prob fixed it by now(but they havent fixed the tranny issue).

but i think all is well and wouldnt worry about it unless you were part of the recall

I'm taking it to dealer on 9-9 and see what the result is.
The auto lock feature doesn't even engage when the car makes this 'clunk' sound. It doesn't have to sit more than a few seconds. It happens after you shift from reverse to park and then start moving forward.
And no, it isn't the torque of the engine taking over either.

Ok, my car, if I shift into R gear, I heard "clank" sound, this is from FWD tranny. Then, I shift to "D", and start to move forward, in the very first moment I reach 10 MPH, 99% I will hear "thump" sound.

Good luck with your appointment.

So you have the same problem I do. Doesn't the sound give you the impression that something has broke loose?
Thanks for the well wishes and I'll post the findings if you like.

My 94Legend has similar sound. In Dec. I posted the same question about 04TL as you have asked now. After asking three different Acura mechanics, I start to believe it's NORMAL.

To me it sounds to bad to be normal. It didn't do it when I first got it but rather in the past couple hundred miles I have noticed it more. Probably because I know it is there and am listening more intently for it.
