117000 miles on a 2004 TL..
I'm thinking about purchasing a 2004 tl the only problem is it has 117k on it. The car overall looks great. Couple of scratches here and there, but as far as engine and tranny it feels great...
I never owned an acura before. I have an Rx7 and Rx8 and i would trade an Rx8 for the TL. What are common problems for the TL's over 100k. How are these cars as far as tranny and stuff? I'm just worried that the tranny might go soon and then i'm screwed...
Also the guy wants 16.9 for it... Worth it?
Thanks a lot.

If I were you I'd probably look for something with less mileage on it even though it is safe to assume that most of those miles are high way. For high 19K to mid 20K you can get an 04 w/ 50-75K miles on it depending on the condition. Unless they are will to sell anywhere from 12-15K and the car runs well and passes your inspection keep shopping around bro.

that's an incredible amount of miles for such a 'young' car...I agree w/ JAB00....go for something w/ less miles in general unless the seller's willing to drop the price under 15K. The TLs are great cars, but there's no sense in stretching to buy one that's already had a huge amount of its life used up already.
If you're eager to own an Acura, which is understandable, but want to stay within that price range, I'd look for a used TSX, which is a very nice car w/ a lot of the same features for a smaller price tag.

I would say it depends on how many miles per year you expect out of the car. If you're going to drive 30,000+ miles p/yr, I'd look elsewhere, if 10/15,000 miles not a bad deal as they should last forever, or almost forever with resonable care. If it has the Navigation system, that's a plus. If from a dealer, see if you can get a warranty on the car, or purchase an aftermarket warranty for peace of mind.
KBB has the '04 w/Nav, 117,000 miles, excellant condition listed as $19950 retail.
If you've owned rotaries, I'm certain you'll find the TL a pleasure to own.

I'd keep looking around. For a little more money, you can get a car with fewer miles. I'm sure the car you speak of is solid and won't have many problems, I still would prefer something with less miles. Good luck

I agree with all on looking for something with less mileage BUT BUT BUT if you are looking in the 16 K range then this would be your only option....anything with 50 - 65 K on an 2004 would be aroudn 22 K or so ....

I'm not afraid of a Honda product with 117,000 miles on it if it was well taken care of and shows few prior problems. If the prior owner hasn't regularly maintained the car and changed the fluids (engine oil & coolant, tranny, brake, power sterring) or the records aren't available, then pass on the car.
At 117K miles, the car should have had the timing belt, hoses and other belts replaced by now. If it also had the water pump replaced, so much the better. Other items that may need attention soon are clutch slave cylinder (every manual Honda I've owned had one fail over 100k miles) and the automatic belt tensioner.
If you are seriously considering the car, take it to a trusted mechanic who can delve into the engine bay and check things out.
You're entering unknown territory. There are few 3rd Gen TLs around that have over 100K miles on them.
Good luck.

You guys...wtf??? And Lee, you must get bored and just circle the fucking beltway??
OP: No way in hell do you buy someone else's problem, which is what that is. The reason I say that is because this is around the time that things go wrong. No warranty means you have to kick out the dough to get it fixed! That makes that squeal of a deal start to make YOU squeal! Get you something used with a warranty man. Save yourself some headache! And get a carfax. Doesn't tell you everything, but it tells you more than you know now!

HaHa - You guys with the low miles are fooling yourself if you think that the low miles are going to get you THAT much of a premium. Sure, you'll be better able to get closer to "private party" values but there are so many "normal" milage cars out there that can be had for reasonable values that EXTREME low mileage doesn't really pay off. Your just wasting the car IMHO if you've only driven it 8K miles in the 3+ years you've likely had it (since new). Unless your in the military and have no access to it, which in case I retract everything I said and want to thank you for your service.

My office is only a half mile away. If I don't walk, I take my daily driver: the Jeep Wrangler. It's not worth taking the TL out of the garage as it doesn't even have a chance to warm up. I drive it (usually) once a week to my friend's house in Boca which is a 50 mile round trip on the turnpike. So, almost all 8k miles are highway miles.

A car that is driven daily, and warmed up to operating tempature will be in much better condition than a low mileage car that never gets a chance to warm up fully. Short trip driving is bad for a car.
Id rather buy an 04 TL with 75K that was driven daily, and maintained perfectly over an 04 TL with 12k also maintained well. Honda's are incredable cars, and as long as they are maintained properly; mileage does not matter.
With that said, yes the car you are looking at does have high mileage for the year. If it was maintained it will perform just like an 04 TL with 50k on it. Timing belt/water pump, coolant, tranny fluid, oil changes. Check for those records. I'm sure the motor mounts were already replaced (common failure) The price is a little steep for a car with over 100k on it though.

yea... the only thing i would really be concerned is the timing belt... if its an automatic the tranny could be slowly dieing....
theres no reason a well maintained TL wont last 200k... but things will go wrong in that time!! you'll need a tune up for sure... plugs, belts, hoses, battery (if not already done)
and new shocks definitely!! 117k is alot for an 04... thats probably about 40k a year!!!... tell him $15k... no more

Should be fine as long as the car has been regularly serviced, especially the 105K timing belt change. The high mileage at this age would be nearly all highway miles and easy on the car overall.

Cruising in my
My brothers 92' Legend has over 320,000 (kilometers though :P) and it runs great still. He's had it for 4 years and the only issue he had was replacing the radiator. Acura's have great longevity. I think you should look around for something else but in the meantime it you can get the price dropped considerably then go for it.

Please don't bring her up! She might return with that tired whine. (Funny as hell though)

A J35A8 EG civic is in
There's just people like me who drive alot. My 07TL that I got in December has about 26,300 miles, which is alottt for 6 months. So what I would recommend is getting a car fax, and try to negotiate the price down to 14-15,000. Start at 14 and you'll prolly end up with at least 15,5.
