thanks for the quick response. i just did oil+filter 400miles ago. i HAVE to do timing belt, water pump etc. next week because im on vacation and thats the only time i have to do it. i suppose i could just wait until im ready for my next oil change to seafoam and do the plugs?
i assumed my observed MPG was so bad because of an issue, but i guess its my driving conditions. mostly backroads. 2.5mi to work. and the highway driving i do is like im being chased.
MIH reads MPG:18 MPH: 18
thanks again for the help.

In a 2.5 mile back-road drive your motor won't even get up to temp. That means the ECU is running it rich and the oil is still SUPER thick. You can't get good mpgs under those conditions.
Can oil even do it's job under those conditions?

the car idles for roughly 10-15min in the mornings. the gauge is always up to temp when i get in.
btw, MPG aside, i fucking love this car and it was a great decision to buy.

I just did my 2004 TL that I just purchased with 127k miles on it and it didn't smoke ANYTHING! I wanted a smoke show, but my baby just purred like a kitten and drove like a dream. I should be happy that my TL is clean, but part of me wanted to see some smoke.

So, I did the sip sippy sip method today. Ran it up like the DIY recommended.
Initial results are pretty promising. I've been chasing a rattle or pinging (sounds kinda like a tin can being shaken at 1500-2000 rpms) which i think has been coming from the exhaust manifold/cats? Happens everyday, hot or cold when its under a load. I could hear it today on my way home from work. 40 mile highway commute, it was happening before and after the long drive. I got home, followed the DIY and afterwards, putting the car through the hoops so to speak, i could NOT for the life of me at ANY rpm get it to recreate that noise. I drove around for about 40 min, holding it in 2nd, keeping it at 4000 rpms, then doing a bunch of 10 to 50 runs, just to clear it out. No noise. Pretty stoked. Will it last? I'm not sure but I'll keep an ear out for it. We'll see tomorrow morning what happens and how the rest of the week fares and ill post any further results.
I have an 05 with 145000 so its expected that there might be some carbon build up, even though I always use premium and keep up maintenance.

IHC i do alot of driving from los angeles to SF in the TL once a month maybe when would be the best time to do the seafoam? i have 114k miles and need an oil change in the next 1000 miles which will be pretty soon. should i add to the gas tank before my trip to SF and then on the return add to the crank and then change the oil when i return to LA or how should i time this?

I did it twic in the 02 CLS once at 45K and once at 90K. never had issues an I am at 118K. The only thing I got going on now is the ICV and that is going to be fixed on Monday (Remove clean reinstall)

Stumbled across this thread last week. Grabbed a bunch of cans at pep boys for $8 a pop and seafoamed my 2008 TL-S 6MT over the weekend. Has 64k. Super easy and painless. Put full can in half full gas tank, then started it up and put half a can through vacuum hose using sip sip. Then let sit for 15 or so and then when idle leveled, took her for the drive at 4000 rpms. Had some moderate smoke for about a minute. Car ran beautifully before but I can feel that it is definitely even smoother. Will do the crank case this weekend as I will be changing the oil and converting to Syncromesh.
As I am a "noob" i will repeat sip sip and gas tank method in a month or so and change out my plugs. Thanks OP and 01tl4tl for great information!

Complete waste of time and money. People were claiming improvements when these cars were new. The power of the mind lol. Any smoke you see is Seafoam burning off, it's not cleaning anything. You just don't put a solvent in the intake tract or in the crank case. It's really not good for the engine.

Did the deed, 6am will tell results
To start, this is my first post here, been following the forum for about 2 months now (back when I bought the TL) great stuff guys!!
As for the Seafoam intake, crank, and gas tank treatment. Its done, did it at 1000 miles on a fresh oil change/filter. Had some smoke, had some sputters, nothing out of the ordinary per this thread, but the oil had the proof. The original oil ( what was in the car when I bought it) was pretty clean after a few thousand miles of getting beat on, previous owner apparently took good care of the car. After seafoaming the crankcase @ 1000 miles, the oil came out diiiiiiiiirty. It works, there at least. MPG butt dyno etc will follow. Also will be swapping plugs, not sure if/when they were replaced last but since its new to me, cant hurt.
This is a great place for info, thanks again for all the info guys.

Sure thing. Seafoam has done some unintended things while I felt/listened for improvements after the treatment. Now replacing spark plugs, brakes, swapping to coilovers, stage 4 exhaust is in the works for stupid cheap, GM fluid, etc.

Hey guys,
I'm going to try seafoam on my TL, but I`m a bit confuse about location of vac line. On youtube videos there are lots of DIYs on 03-06 TL's, and I have 08 and it seems that vac line on my is not on the same place as on the videos.
Really like my car and don't want to brake anything.
I would really appreciate it if somebody can post a picture of the location of the vac line from '08 TL.
Thank you.
