'08 TL engine air filter

Hey AZ, So my car is approaching 60k miles and I figured it's time I changed my engineer air filter inside my intake. I have a stock intake, but will change to an AEM CAI very soon.

But, for now I figure I change my air filter as well. The dealer is charging me $60 to change the air filter, and I won't spend that much for something that can cost me a fraction of the price.

My question to you guys is--Where can I buy a good air filter? I was looking into some and I came across the K&N Air Filter for $50 on JC Whitney.

Any one else has any recommendations?

Thanks in advance. You guys always come through for me.

Don't have the funds currently to do so. Maybe I'll do it within a month or two. Only reason why I want to change my engine air filter now is because I'm getting horrible MPG. I get around 16mpg in the city. And I'm not a lead foot driver at all.

Maybe I should reset the ECU? I just got the car in February.

Edit: 16 in city horrible? I don't think so...

Some might not agree but,

To me, in city, filter doesn't affect anything
I mean you don't have enough air at the front air pipe too pass it to the resonater

No way it's getting cold air in to the ice box
Do a long drive in city, at hot temperature...what will happen is ice box will get hot and absorb the heat
You notice it easily... feeling the pedal and power-loss

so don't also belive to people who says stock intake is the best

Edit: If you remove the resonater and extedn the pipe to the front of the bumper (using the small pipe in front of battery) that's a different story.

I'm not a fan of CAI also...what whould I do high RPM power... I don't race
also big diameter pipe ---> again high rpm power

K&N CAI pipe is 2.5 or 2.75 in diameter...fits perfect to the throttle, no gap.
That's what I have but I don't use the CAI, I customized it and extended it to the front of the air pipe after resonater.

reset your trip meter by holding down the "RES" button and make sure the "avg mpg, mph, time, distance" all reset to 0 values.

Drive around for about 1-2 weeks than see what your average MPG is...

Be sure to pump only 91 or 93 octane gas. 87 and 89 can and will cause loss of mpg and possibly damage overtime down the road

Check tire PSI. Make sure they are all within spec. Should be 32-35 psi at cold readings..

The more stop and go you have to fight the lower the MPG's.

Well, I do reset the trip meter every time I refill on gas. I usually always get 93 octane, but recently I've been putting in 87 and 89. Just because I've been cheap.

When I do a mixture of highway driving with city driving (mostly city), I get around 20 mpg. But if I strictly do city, I will get around 16 mpg.

The tire pressure is a good question, because when i first got the car. My front right tire would lose pressure after 2-3 weeks and I would have to put air in again. But now the front left is giving me issues and whenever i fill the tire up with air it will drop down to 27 sometimes!!! Does anyone know what's going on with the car? The treads on the front left are gone though, I don't think the tires have ever been changed. I just got the car in February and it's at 59k miles now.

The Acura TL is supposed to get up to 28 mpg highway. Most I've ever gotten was 26mpg and that was pure highway.

Low tire pressure will cause a drop in MPG, combine that with 87 octane and that would be enough to see a dramatic loss in MPG. Check to see if the tire has a leak, if so get it patched/plugged for $10-$15. I wouldn't go out and spend $50 for a K&N filter, if you want to change it just go to a parts store and pick one up for around 13 bucks.

You should not be putting low grade gas in a vehicle that uses a high compression ratio, the higher grade gas prevents engine knocking. Engine knocking can cause damage to your engine.

I pump only shell v-power simply because they have nitrogen enriched fuel which supposedly keeps the valves and injectors clean from carbon buildup and other gunk. Owned the car for nearly 1 year and half now, I put on 30k miles on it to this day and the most I ever gotten was 35-36MPG

You may want to get all 4 brand new tires or get them patched. DO NOT USE "Fix-a-flat". Keep them pressurized to 32-34psi cold. I do 70 miles a day 5x a week and average 22-23mpg fill up every 4-5 days. Usually fill up 13-14 gallons

Oh and I don't recommend K&N...

If you are talking about drop-in replacement filters don't do it. It's 2-3x over priced for what it is. It's a oil based filter. They claim you can simply clean it instead of having to buy a replacement, but the catch is if you clean it and re-oil it incorrectly it will lead to engine damage.

I would just buy a wix engine air filter which costs ~$15. I would much rather buy and replace with a brand new filter than "Re-oiling" a K&N and risk engine damage.

If you want a WIX air filter I have a brand new one that I purchased but never installed it..

Re-oiling a K&N isn't rocket science. (meh, yeah, unfortunately for some it probably is).

My throttle body is a clean as the day I bought the car, all with 120K miles of running my K&N.
