07 Type S Steering

Hey, I just test drove a 07 type S today, steering is pretty stiff, is this normal? Thanx.

Yep. The steering is pretty firm. The whole suspension as well. Not jarring, just firm.

Personally I love it but fear it will loosen up with time, eventually feeling a little mushy.

Yes. Mine is the same way (as well as the one from the test drive). In a way I like it, because it gives good feedback, but I'm used to making turns with one hand. Now, I have to use 2 if it's a tight turn.

I drove a 2004 Audi A8L right before my first spin in a TLS and I thought I was going to need 4 more arms to steer the thing, that being said. I'm almost 2 months into owning a TLS and the steering seems right where it should be - if it were any looser you'd probably end up driving off the road if you floored it...

hopefully it's not just artificially stiff and gives a real, good and accurate road feedback.

is it comparable to the 3series BMW steering, if anyone experienced that?

BMW seems to have their steering, at least on the Sport models, spot on, so if the

Type S' is similar than Acura really succeeded in that regard

In addition, the TL-S is similar to some BMWs, in that the steering wheel gets stiffer the faster you go, as on the highway. I think the brochure calls it active steering. Cool safety feature.

I had a steering issue (tight) with my 2005 TL and they replaced the rack and pinion and it has been really tight ever since. I have an 07 RL and it is pretty loose compared to the TL. It almost doesn't seem right, but maybe they used new parts which are stiffer.. I don't know..

Maybe it's tighter to try to compensate for the outrageous torque-steer.

I love the tightness of the steering, you have to "feel" the road when you drive.
I can't stand the excessive power steering on some cars (i.e. American cars).

I finally entered triple digit MPH this weekend, this car is probably smoother at 100 than it is at 30.

Are you the guy that did the C-Net review?

Torque Steer, at least on the '07 and '08 is *nearly* a non-issue; certainly not "outrageous".

turning radius is completely horrible lmfao, and yeah like everyone said it is real stiff

torque steer almost disappears after the breakin period... well mine did, till I modded it up the ass, now I can't completely floor it with 1 hand on the steering wheel, rule of thumb, 2 hands on the wheel = no torque steer

The steering wheel is stiff, but this is another reason why I went with Type-S, but I know the moment I'll take off stock wheels and put some lighter racing wheels, the steering will be looser, at least that's the way it was in my 2G.

I dropped around 4lbs with the new shoes (18x8.5 +35) 22lbs per wheel, didn't really feel any handling difference in a straight line corners got more grip due to getting rid of the stock tires (adequate tires also remove some torque steer as well as removing a minimal amount of understeer)

Exactly why I went with TLS. Previous BMW 3-series owner for a number of years and wanted an upgrade. Didn't like the BMW '07 models for a variety of reasons. Felt the steering and handling was comparable--fun to drive.

The steering is a bit stiffer than the regular TL but the way it goes on that on-ramp or exits is just amazing .... no more whinning tires & really stays on the curve ....

This is my first FWD car in a long time. I'm used to the back-end getting loose, not the steering wheel. The Torque-steer was bad with the stock tires. Worse with the snows on now. I hope it will be better when I get new summer tires this spring.

Thanks.

Tight steering is okay for me sometimes i have to use both hands to turn and as someone mentioned turning radius is horribleeeee makes me like a noob when i park cuz with other "normal" cars it goes in the first time but sometimes ill have to bak it up >.<

The tight steering does not cause the poor turn radius or vise-versa.

Poor turn radius is a characteristic of FWD. The 2nd had a turn radius similar (if not slightly worse) to the 3G. Both the 3G TL and TL-S have the same turn radius.

Tight steering is 1.) part of the firmer overall suspension of the TL-S and

2.) partly related to the speed sensitive steering effort thing - the faster your going, the more steering effort for the same turn rate. It doesn't always *feel* stiffer at speed because it's easier to turn rotating tires than non (or slow) rotation tires. But you will notice at speed that the steering input feels more precise.

STEERING

The TL uses torque-sensing, variable power-assisted rack and pinion steering. The engine-driven variable-output pump provides the kind of steering feel that driving enthusiasts like: lighter steering effort at low speeds with a heavier feel at higher speeds.

The TL Type-S has a power steering pump and steering gearbox designed to improve steering effort build-up and feel. To this end, the power steering pump has been tuned for decreased flow at 3250 rpm for increased effort build up. Additionally, the steering gearbox tuning increases effort by 15-percent at high speeds for better on-center feel. The steering rack has also been retuned for better damping feel. To keep up with the demands of spirited driving, the TL Type-S also features a new aluminum power steering fluid cooler.

Hydraulic dampers built into the steering system further improve stability during cornering and at high speeds. A one-way kickback valve decreases steering wheel kickback that can be caused by road irregularities. The hydraulic valve closes when it senses road irregularities, impeding disturbances to the steering wheel.

You have NOOOO idea how much I love the tight steering now.
I'm not used to the steering on my STI after I drive the TL everytime. LOL

But yup! You'll get used to the stiff steering over time and feel that it's almost nothing!
I always turn the steering using one hand with eassseee now. Unlike when I first got the car how my hand always slip off when I try to steer with one.

I normally only use my left hand to steer; maybe I wanna think I'm driving a MT.
The only thing I can stand is when my hands get sweaty, I have to let go to wipe it off because I don't want to get too much sweat on the leather steering wheel.
