06 TL w/ 75K miles - time to replace?
My wife loves her 06 TL, but is getting worried about miles on it. Has 76,000 miles, mostly highway, and expects about 40K per year to be added. All maintenance done as scheduled and oil and filter evey 3000-3500 miles. Just changed front brake pads, and only other issue has been rear view mirror motors which were replaced last week. Runs and looks fantastic.
She is considering an 06 TL she saw w/ 40K miles offered for $15000.
Seems to me that our car will depreciate about $3000-$3500 over the next year and 40,000 miles, where newer vehicle will take bigger depreciation hit.
Would like to hear your opinions on whether time to replace, or should this be a reliable low maintenance cost driver for 150K to 200K? It's paid off, so Im hoping I'll get reasons to keep it.

Those are low miles for an '06. The TL is just an upgraded Accord and those things are sweet to 150K. Then you just have to take care of items that just wear out. Also highway miles are the best. No reason not to run it until the wheels fall off...

Keep it, it will still be good even by the time you add on another 40k. Plus it's paid off... all highway miles, even better. Just keep doing what you have been doing and you will be thankful that you kept the car.

Buying an 06 for with 40K miles on it but putting about 40K miles per year leaves her in the same position after 1 year. If the car is paid off and runs well I don't see the point of getting rid of it for a new one. At 150K miles those concerns are a bit more reasonable.

If it's been a good car... I'd definitely keep it. My '06 has 57K trouble-free miles and I plan to have it for at least 5 more years. This is almost guaranteed since I can't stand the 4G TL and barely tolerate the 2G TSX.

After 75K miles, expect the major expense to be the timing belt/water pump replacement, which will run you about $700. Add to that the regular oil changes and your own inspections, and you should be good to go easily past 200K miles.

^^ Definitely what all these guys said. There's no sense in picking up another car payment when she's just going to put that many miles on it anyway. That is a LOT of driving btw...I thought I did a lot of driving haha! It's a Honda, it should last many many years as long as you folks stay on top of the maintenance.

Maintenance costs on 05 TL with 76K miles
My own 05 TL has 76K right now and my plans are to keep it going for as long as it can last. Based on other Acura owners, 200K should be attainable.
For me, the only expense has been wear & tear items:
- oil changes per the MID
- engine and cabin filters
- 3 sets of tires after crap EL42s were replace at 15K miles
- new battery after 58 months on original
- replacement set of OEM wheels (too much accumulated curb rash)
Total I have spent on maintenance over the years comes to just shy of $3900. 5-yr anniversary will be in 4 weeks. This is one terrific car!

Absolutely you gotta keep it... Run it until the wheels come off... Nowadays, no car note + good looking ride = heaven.. Honestly, since you already know the car, know it rides great and have done the maintenance, it doesn't make sense to get into another of the same car (that you know nothing about) just to save some miles that you are going to put right back on to it. Save the dough and enjoy!! I've got almost 70K miles on my 06 and that's hard NYC miles. Other than the paint on the front being beaten to hell from NYC winters and a daily 40 mile commute and tranny replaced at 30K due to whining noise, it runs and looks like a champ. I'm saving the dough to pick up a play-thing - maybe a 'Stang!!

Awesome. Just the type of replies I hoped for. Think I can feel good about talking her into keeping the car.
Thank everybody!!!
Oh and I agree with prev poster. Don't like the new TL either - not ouside or in.

With the miles she puts on the car, it isn't worth it financially. In a year or less she'll have the same car, with the same miles, the only difference is you'll have a car payment.
Not worth it. The biggest possible thing on the TL is the tranny. If you must, do a simple drain and refil of the trans at each oil change. It's about 3.5 quarts of fluid. Will help keep it in great shape at all times. Plus, it's a helluva lot cheaper than another car payment, for a car you don't know the maintenance history on.

The most important factor of all, which imo dwarfs all other reasons here, is that your car is a KNOWN asset. You've done all the maintenance, you know it's reliable and doesnt have any major issues. You need to think twice before exchanging that for an UNKNOWN asset. Who knows how that car was treated or what maintenance, issues, accidents, etc that it has had. The way to get the most value out of a car is to keep it for as long as possible.

Your best bet is to keep the 06 you have and just get regular maintenance done to it. Oil changes and filter changes every few thousand miles are necessary with any car. The only costly thing will be the 105K service which will replace the timing belt, water pump and other parts. However this will keep the car running well for quite a while! The TL will take you easily in to the 200K range if you take care of it. In all honesty it's the cheapest and easiest route to take.

To the OP, at 85,000 miles on my '06, besides oil changes and tires all I have ever replaced is the battery which went bad in a year. The dealership offered to replace it for free but I came out of pocket for an Optima. So really there have been no maintenance costs besides oil and filter changes.
Just upgraded the brakes but the original pads had tons of life left in them.
For something that your wife is going to be driving, if I had any doubts I would not recommend keeping the TL. But I would feel comfortable if the situation were reversed and my GF had to drive it every day at this mileage.
I fully plan on keeping mine until the wheels fall off and anything short of 300,000 miles would be a surprise.

Continue changing the engine oil and filter regularly.
Be sure to replace both the engine and cabin air filters about every 30k. At the same, service the transmission.
You'll probably need a transmission rebuild around 150-175k.
A timing belt, timing belt tensioner, water pump, drive belt and spark plug replacement will be needed around 105k. A valve adjustment will also be needed at that time. At a Honda dealer, this will cost you around $1200. Our local Acura quoted about $1600 for this job.
