05 TL – VS - 88 Trans Am

So I met up with my old buddy form high school. Just happens that he has a 88 Trans am. After talking with him for a wile, he starts talking about how fast his car is. My brother was there, and he drove in that car before, so my bro talked us in to racing.

I caved. We put down $50 on it (my brothers money). So he started up his car, he has a 350 tune port injection, racing chip and 3” pipes straight back form the headers no mufflers no cats, I admit it sounds mean and very intimidating.

So I followed him down the street wile he was smoking his tires at every turn and fish tailing like it was nothing.

We finally found a good spot. I rowed down my window, my brother said READY GO. I don’t now why but I decided to leave my traction control on. He stomped on the gas spun his tires like crazy.

We were even on the take off then it went back and forth all the way till I hit 60. Once I shifted (not sure what gear it was my heart was pumping so hard) I left him. By the time I hit 80 he was two car lengths behind me.

Man my lil bro was right and made his self $50.

All in all a I can’t believe I won here is a link to Cardomain ware he put info about his car. I’ll post it so you can see what I raced.

He had to be pissed. LOL Nice!. My dad was looking at getting a 84 corvette (sting ray) i believe, POS is my thought, he said that car would waste mine, i laughed and said ill bet $1000 or $500 how ever much he felt like losing. He wouldnt stand to good of a chance would he? If the corvette was stock. Im thinking not.

Mid-80s muscle cars were so smogged out, stock they had no top end, I used to blow by Z28s and Trans Ams in a '72 Mazda RX-3 (modified) on the highway...But remove the smog crap (maybe headers and exhaust) and the race will be challenging to say the least...

IIRC, the 5.7L IROC-Z and Trans Am topped @ 145-150mph in stock trim....which was quite fast back in the 80s. Nowadays, most family sedans equipped with a manual transmission (i.e.: Accord V6 6MT, Altima V6 MT, etc,...) could reach that save for the factory governor.

i think with the traction control off it seemes like the cars is faster. i think this just because with it off my car shifts in to 2nd and the tires spin with it on they dont.

I think if he knew how to handle that old muscle he would have smoked me, but he stomped the gas on the start and spun the tires like crazy and got a bad start.

He has a full exhaust and chip.....
Those car's are DOGS, L98 TPI i think where rated at 200hp, heavy and slow. Not untill 93 when they started putting the 350 LT-1 rated at 275 in did they start to get faster. Even then they where still mid 14 second cars. Best i got out of my 97 WS-6 in stock trim was 13.9@101.

Traction Control is so that if your tires slip your car will auto pump your brakes so if u turn it off it jus lets the car go and if your a novice racer and u smash the gas off the line your gonna burn rubber which isnt good but if you have the know how and experiance to use the TC off it could change the out come from a lost to win!

If im wrong please correct me(still learning)
