'05 Supercharged TL vs. '07 BMW 550i

Had some fun runs with my friend's 550. Full mods in my sig. He is completely stock. We did two runs from about 55 or so.

Good runs man, nice video!

CarandDriver did 13.7@104 with a '07 550i, not bad at all! 4.8L, 360 hp, 360 torque...

Smooth shifting and you pulled good on that 2nd run...

Looks like your friend had trouble shifting?

Nice. I feel like a SC TL should pull more on a 550i though...

Side note, I didn't know the 550s came in stick.

Thanks guys. It was a pretty fun run. I just picked up a GoPro camera and wanted to test it out.

Teteux - I think he shifted ok - if he messed up, he would have said something. Normally he would give me some excuse but this time he just admitted the TL was quicker.

I'm not sure if the latest 550s come with a stick (I think they do) but I do know '06 and '07 did - he looked at both.

My SC doesn't seem to be putting out the numbers as some of the other SC I've seen posted. My whp is about 305. I don't recall what the torque was...maybe around 260? This was on a Land and Sea Dyno.

Nice runs! I love it how there wasn't a single car on every run props to you for at least trying to keep it safe!

^^ Thanks...that's the only road around here that I can play on. I normally don't like to run with other cars around. Depends on how you time it, that road is usually empty when I go!

Good catch but I have some good news/bad news.

The good news is I did pick up a new (to me) set of wheels and they're A LOT lighter! Volk RE30 - 16.5lbs each!!! I forgot to update my sig.

The bad news is that they're already on the car so that's as hard as I'm gonna pull.

In your sig it it says Greddy Exhaust with stock resonator. Does that mean the OEM resonator that has a 2.25in inlet or outlet or both(can't remember). Wouldn't that be bottlenecking the 2.5in piping on the Greddy Exhaust. I say get a Vibrant(one in the BM right now) or Aero AR25 resonator which are both good to cut down on drone and town down the exhaust, PCDs w/ HFC to cut down on rasp and smell, and a PnP on your IM with matching TB and runners and you'll be in the 330-350 range at least. Im not 100% sure the numbers I'm using are correct, but it can't hurt and you already have so much invested in the performance of the car, why not? Maybe someone with a SCd TL can correct me if I'm wrong or elaborate on it.

Just a less restrictive exhaust could give you some impressive gains. My car gained around 15 whp going from a 2.5" aftermarket exhaust to a 3" aftermarket exhaust... and it's just a N/A V6.

Would you have to be careful about having enough back pressure if you arent making enough power?

If you had no other work other than the exhaust is there going to be a point of diminishing returns?

Yes you will see diminishing returns without supporting mods just like any other mod, but back pressure is a myth. You want as little back pressure as possible, but you also want to keep velocity up which increases cylinder scavenging. That is why smaller piping will sometimes out perform larger piping. It has nothing to do with back pressure, though. You get enough back pressure to avoid reversion and scorched exhaust valves just by having exhaust manifolds (headers) installed.

Back Pressure Myth

Not sure of the size but I ended up cutting the resonator off the stock exhaust and putting it on the Greddy. This was my first aftermarket exhaust so I didn't know what to expect and the drone was too much. I realize that it kind of defeated the purpose of getting an exhaust to free up flow but it just wouldn't have been enjoying driving around with that drone.

Even though my numbers seem way lower than other SC out there, I'm still happy with how quick this car is. It still puts a big grin on my face every time I open it up so at this point, I probably won't be doing much to try and increase power.

Another reason (besides not having any $$ to play with) is that I already replaced the clutch and I don't want to push it too much and have to replace it again.

I think the next upgrade, if I do anything, would be Tein SS or Megans. I need to save up some money thought.

Thanks. I say go for the SC but just know that's it's not just the 4.5k or whatever you can get it for. There some supporting mods that you should really get with it to make it run properly. It's amazing how quick it all adds up!!!

I was in 3rd. My friend and I got to talking and i think we started somewhere near 50 - 55. I'm hoping we get a chance to do it again soon so we can experiment with different start speeds and gears.

A coworker of mine has an '06 S4 and I'm hoping we get a chance to do a few runs but we live in opposite directions. I may have to take the long way home one day.

U should be in second gear (if ur a 6mt) on a 50 roll. Big difference from third gear. U should see a big improvemnt i always do 50 rolls in my TL and if i start in third it's pointless.

We're gonna see if we can do it again soon and but this time from 20mph, then 30mph, and so on up to 60mph. I'll try 50 from 2nd.

I was playing around on my way to work today and thought of what you said. I'm not sure if 2nd gear would work for me from 50. It seemed like it would be one second, or less, before I would need to shift into 3rd. Not positive but I'm going to see if I can record it tomorrow just to see. I'll do a 3rd gear run from 50 too just for the fun of it.

Just out of curiousity, what RPMs are you at going 50 in 2nd? Any chance of recording a run?

Looks like your 2nd gear goes out to around 65-70 like mine... It's certainly worth being in 2nd on roll races 50mph and below unless you're limited by traction which it looks like you aren't.

2nd actually tops out at 60. I wish it was a little more.

It's been raining all night and was still drizzling this morning. Speaking of a few more runs...I'm downloading those right now...have a clip with a bunch of runs on it. He was with me when I took those 2nd and 3rd gear rolls.

Should be ready in about 10 min. or so.

A bunch of new runs with the 550

Runs were done in 2nd and 3rd gear anywhere from 30 to about 60...

Damn!

It looks like you gave him the jump on each and every race...no wonder I thought you should pull more lol. The 550i gears are a bit longer which allows him to utilize all that torque up top while you have to shift quickly. You should be putting down more power but his gear ratios definitely help. Nice job pulling each time even when you gave him the jump It's much harder to play catch up...

I watched your speedo vids and wow...straight beast!

Thanks Sonnick. His gears are definitely longer...2nd tops out at over 70 and 3rd is over 100 compared to about 60 and 90's for me.

I'm trying to get the whole run in the video and find that if I jump early, he disappears from the camera view rather quickly and then you can't tell how much I would pull from him.
