04TL auto sucks in 3rd gear

i was passing this old Montecarlo like the one in (Training Day:a movie)passed him like your to slow. Then i cam to a light made a right and when i reached 40mph which was nothing he turned and was catching up really fast in the other lane.So i floor it in "D" and it downshifted and i can feel the power, when it shifted in 3rd his front bumper was at my door and i just felt like i lost power, he held his postion for a couple of sec and i started to pull but by the time i hit 120mph i was about 7 cars ahead.I feel like when in 2nd gear its strong and when it shifts to 3rd it like boggs out really noticably.Has anybody experience the same power lost?

I agree,

3rd gear is way to tall.

It puts you about 1,000rpm out of the power band after the 2 to 3 shift in D.
When you are in D the car shifts about 500 to 800 before redline.

If you use your SS you can help prevent the bog. It's not completely gone but it helps.

1st and 2nd are matched well to this car. Maybe 3rd and 4th are tall for emissions.

120 mph?? Wow...

Well, I second with xlilbluux's opinion.

IMHO, this speed cannot be performed by 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears of 04TL 5AT (3rd gear's top speed in the plain roads could be 105-115 MPH). If you did hit 120, mmmm..., you're absolutely running at 4th gear, maybe around 4700-5100 RPM... 3rd's gear ratio is 1.021, and 4th is 0.666, which definitely makes different.

I think 04TL's 1, 2, and 3 are the best, and 5th gear could curise well with 30+ MPG (40-80 MPH)... 4th is good, too, 'cause it helps me to get rid of "resonnance of exhaust"...

well 120mph cant be performed in 1st or 2nd gear.i wasnt saying anything like that all i was doing was focusing all my thoughts about how shifting from 2nd(which i strongly believe i was in)to 3rd and it seemed like i lost power.i wasnt saying i was in 3rd the whole time till i hit 120mph.reread my post again.

I checked again #1 ~ #4 posts. And, what I stated above "this speed cannot be performed by 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears of 04TL 5AT" didn't mean you're saying that. That sentence is only the meaning of the reality.

Let's back to #2 post, "maybe u were at 3rd gear and it shifted to 4th?", then #3 post, "I dont know i think if i was in 4th the whole time after it shifted from what i think was 2nd he prob would have pulled me.i floored it in 3rd(SS)at like 35 to 40 and it didnt feel the same like 2nd gear. But you may be right ". I didn't accuse you of running 120 mph at 1 and 2, and tried to tell you 120 will be definitely at 4 or 5 based on your RPM and throttle opening.

110 is redline in 3rd(5AT). Tall gearing does suck, but overall I think in AT and MT 2nd gear is the "most powerful" on our car. I got onto highway yesterday starting from (0mph) second in my 5AT. Although it didn't start out strong at all, by the time I hit 4K it was at 40, and by the time I hit redline, 75! 3rd gear does seem to set you back farther from VTEC, closer to 4K on the shift to third, but depends on how close it gets to redline. If you can hit VTEC on the shift to third as I did on Saturday on the highway, you go from 75 to 110 amazingly quick. One thing I have noticed - at 4700 when VTEC kicks, it pulls through RPM ALOT faster. On this note, I have noticed because I test this 0-60 everyday on this open road to work - supposedly if you leave it in D in 1st it will go all they way to redline, but sometimes it does and other times if shifts at around 6300. Because 6800 puts you right into VTEC upshfting to 2nd, this 500 rpm difference makes around a .5 second difference 0-60! Of course I do have a K&N filter which someone on here dyno'd on 5AT and got 5whp, plus I modified my instake so there is no twisty up around the battery, just straight back from the inlet to the filter which adds probably another 5whp. 10 whp is not a noticeable differnce, but in my opinion it breathes better, throatier sound, and pulls through rpms slightly higher. I really wish someone could make an ECU adjustment with our car...
