04 TL vs 03 g35 coupe vs 02 330ci NJ TO VERMONT!

ok guys..today me and my friends went to kinnelon vermont from fort lee NJ to pick up our snowboarding equipments from my resort.. well i was in my TL with my girlfriend and 4 of my friends came two by two is g35 coupe and 330ci coupe..so the weight was about the same for both of us..we left yesterday night around 10 ish and got on a highway around 12~1 ish..there was no cars in highway and was really dark..so we nextel each other and said..up to next service area loser paids for food and gas..!!(i never speed..)..so at 50 ~55 mph we all crusie and i dont know who but one of us took off so we all took off...it was very close for all three of us..all of us had automatic..g35 and I took off half car pass 330ci..and than i look at speedo and its at 110mph..so i was kinda gettng shooked and my girlfriends yelling to stop..but i see the 330ci catch up after 110mph..at excatly 130 ish we all stoped and 330ci was dead even with me and g35 was half hood length behind..NOW I KNOW THE REAL RESULTS..VTECH OWNS AT HIGH RPM..VQ ENGINE MASSES AT TOUQUE(i had a maxima which uses same engine and touque was good but high RPM was light.)the european BMW stood up for the last gen m3 engine which is in the 330ci now..high end high speed was amazing how he caught up 110 ~120 pretty fast..i bet with a AEM intake and some mods..g35 models before this years would be GOOD TO EAT FOR DAILY DIET..if a g35 laughs at you let him know a 4 door luxary would be right there not sweating...

If you have an auto, the TL has a mediocore 4th gear because its an overdrive gear. There is a gap between 110-120 mph where it falls out of VTEC. Once you get passed that, the TL hauls again. 3rd gear, from 70-110 is the strongest part of the TL. You have to hold 3rd gear to the redline in the sportshift so you can minimize the gap of 4th gear. You can get caught by slower cars if you get out of 3rd gear early and into 4th.

Good job taking the G35 coupe though

I thought the auto TL came with a 5 speed automatic? If so, how can overdrive be 4th gear? Just wondering.

Both 4th and 5th are overdrive gears.

I've been able to run TLs on the top end and MORE than held my own with my 02 Maxima (...talking pre-Y pipe & Injen CAI). A well driven (<---caveat) G35 5AT should make quick work of the TL 5AT.

Interesting account though.

I agree.I just recently pulled pretty good from one in my wifes 05 G35 and in the Max I hold them off as well and I'm stock up to 75. New TL must shine above 80.

the 330 engine was not used in the previous gen M3 motor. the 330 has a 3.0 liter inline 6 motor that puts out 225hp. the previous gen(e36) m3 motor is a 3.2liter inline 6 motor that puts out 240hp. the are similar engines except the m3 motor has a slightly different bore and stroke.

yeah ok

Dum is all I can say at night etc. A g35 couple should be able to eat you for lunch. race an 05 and see what happens but do it on the track and see what happens.

That way if you crash you do not take out the innocent people that have to share a road with you...

You guys who are so against street racing may as well put it in his signature. He didn't ask for your critisicm, he was asking for info on the car. So maybe it was stupid to race at night, but you can't blame him with gas at these prices...I take it that you won? Does the TL always drop out of VTEC when moving into overdrive?

Of course he was asking for criticism........posting crap like that is just an invitation. And what does that have to do with the price of gas? Your logic is convoluted. But you are right that he was stupid.....good call.

Any kind of street racing is a huge risk.

In addition to risking your life and the lives of others you risk getting caught. In the State of TX it is a Class A misdemeanor which carries a fine of up to $5k and up to 12 months in jail . My wife spent some time working for the Denton County DA's office and they regularly handed out 6 to 12 month sentences.

I really enjoy "spirited" driving in my TL, I often have to restrain myself from racing the red light challengers....

On my TL(04) 1ST, 2ND, and 3RD are all strong. 4th and 5th are just crusing gears. Just my experience.

Question A toss-up

Both 4th and 5th gears are "overdrive". The TL does not drop out of VTECH because it's in overdrive. The writer was saying that the RPM drop between 3rd and 4th is so wide that it puts the engine slightly below the "cam" when the rpms drop going into 4th or below about 4500 rpm.

I can't confirm that as I never tried it but that seems like too big a drop between gears- 7000 (rev limiter) down to 4500. It doesn't make sense. However, it can be calculated for those who have the time and interest to do so.

And as far as Maximas and G35 beating a TL "hands down" and easily.... Sorry. Not gonna happen. The performance numbers on those cars are so close to each other that the winner might depend on something so minor as who has the least amount of fuel/people pounds on board. A difference of a couple hundred pounds one way or the other can determine the outcome. Also, driver skill... although that is less of a factor with automatics. And whoever wins... it will be very close.

My guess, all other things being equal (which they never are) is that the G35 would be first be about a car length in front of the TL about a car length in front of the Max. Now throw a full tank of gas and a sweathog girlfriend in the G35 and all bets are off.

My . My previous car was a Maxima and I am a lover of all things Nissan.

yea the liters are different but they are same exact engine..same bore and same stroke only the header and the manifold and exhaust is different in the m3 which makes the extra 15 HP...go google it..

your right the bore and stroke are the same but the M54(E46) engine has dual vanos which makes it a little different. the engines are very similar so i am not arguing that they are 2 different engines. also the 330 is a little heavier than the previous gen M3 so the performance will not be identical.

Why do people buy fast and expensive cars? Why do people mod? Why is a v8 better than a i4? Is it so they can brag that they drive the speed limit?
Obviously, racing is dangerous, but why come down so hard on the guy? It was late at night and the street was empty. Geezus....

I think you should trade in your TL for a geo metro.

Just for the gas part alone I would race. If you were in his situation, would you refuse to speed, pull up at the service area a few minutes later and pay for their gas with a grin on your face because you know you played it safe?

Racing on a track can be dangerous, but it can be done safely, too. I know because I used to do it years ago in a variety of different vehicles. But street racing is for morons and pinheads. It's just flat stupid.

I understood the post... think a little bit first.. if you got to race, race an 05 like yours. Acura bumped up the power in the 3g and the G got a bump as well in 05..

I do not care when some idiot tries to go by me fast... learn how to let them go...

This site should not allow posts about street racing in any form as it could be considered an endorsement of said activity. So many strict rules on this board yet you allow reporting of an illegal activity that could result in the death of an innocent person.

The prev gen M3 engine, (the 3 litre one, not the 3.2), was a bored out 2.5 litre engine. So the 3 litre and 3.2 litre M3 engine are not entirely identicle to the 330's engine.

And if you say the bore and stroke are the same, how can the displacement be different?

As for the whole TL vs G35 thing... This has been beaten to death so many times. I agree with the previous poster that said the performance is really so close, that it comes down to stupid things, like how much do the people in the car weigh, how much gas do you have, etc. However, saying that putting on an AEM, etc, would make quick lunch of a G35, is a stupid thing to say, becuase that is spoken as if mods don't exist for the VQ.

Maybe if I can convince my wife, to come with me to the track and race her 05'TL against my 04 G35, we can settle this once and for all... I doubt she'd let me do that tho.

We've never raced our cars head to head, but my wife seems convinced that our coupe is faster than the TL. Tho she is going by seat of the pants from when she drives my car when I'm out of town.

However, one thing I did notice, is that I can chirp the 1-2 shift on my coupe if I punch it using the sport shift, but I have never been able to do that with my wife's TL.

My TL-S chirps into 2nd gear in the sportshift as well, but my 04 TL doesn't. The auto tranny in my 04 is not as aggressive as my TL-S. It feels as if they retarded the ECU to avoid all the tranny failures Type S's undergo. That, combined with the drive by wire throttle which electronically closes the throttle momentarily while you shift in the 04. That's my major complaint of my 04.

As far as this street racing, if its 3:00 in the morning and no ones on the road, I dont see the problem, since the only thing your endangering is your licence and your life. Everyones had a little fun on the road, but it has to be done judiciously. Have fun, but be safe, and be smart.

Ya the Germans are getting tired of being trounced by these upstart Jap cars like the TL's etc. The new BMW M3 will put a stop to all of that for a while with 400+hp V8 engine I'm told. Course the current M3 (333 hp) isn't any slouch either. Not many stock TL's gonna take those boys down. Hell the new Bimmers will run with the Mercedes E55 AMG's. Them is bad boys. Don't even think of messing with the AMG's. . . Unless you wanna get the paint sucked off yer rides. Be like a Honda civic or Geo Metro racing a TL.

don't think the m3 has any direct competition from jap cars. there aren't any 2 door sedans that put those numbers up. i think the V8 m3 is to compete with audi S4(especially the soon to released new RS4) and mercedes C55 both of which have v8s in it.

Especially considering "2 door sedans" don't exist

You're right though, nothing out of Japan is like an M3. The M3 performs close to an NSX, but seats 4 comfortably.

A difference of a couple hundred pounds one way or the other can determine the outcome. Also, driver skill... although that is less of a factor with automatics. And whoever wins... it will be very close.

My . My previous car was a Maxima and I am a lover of all things Nissan.

To wit, I never said I beat them "hands down" or easily.... But in general, I agree that there is some hairsplitting on the performance #s.

Are we in a horsepower race again? I dunno! It ain't like the old days! Roads too crowded to play auto macho (Hey mines bigger'n yours.) Young egos spaced out on speed on too crowded roads = flashing red lights and loud sirens and possibly blood and guts too. Ya I've had that testosterone induced high from punching the pedal and pulling away from some uninformed dude in an American luxmobile. But fortunetly my higher facilities override that lizard part of my brain most of the time. . . Nope I don't need the 400+ Hp - can't afford the gas for it anyway . . .

If gas prices are such an issue and you have concerns about being out of control enough to warrant police action, then maybe you should unload your current ride and get one of these .

Huh? It's not me I'm worried about being out of control it's You being out of control on in my highway travels with my wife in the car, I raise issue with. I can control my lizard brain when some fellow comes speeding by in a challenging manner. Every speeder isn't someone to 'beat'. Why does the car have to become a weapon to beat someone else with?? Highways today are too crowded for boy racers with the ego control of a fruit fly. I suppose if someone were to move to Wyoming they could tear up some asphalt - without too much of a threat. Got an urge to race - consider the consequences . . .

I do consider the consequences of my urge to race....that consquence: having to shell out $20-$30 each time I go to Englishtown. Add to that the cost of autoxing and I guess those consequences could become seriously costly.
