Angry '04 TL only came with ONE key... cheapest way to get copy?

I've heard that you can get a cheap one that will only be able to unlock the doors, but how much does it cost to get a spare that will start the car? Gah, this is somehting I didn't realize until after purchasing

Did you buy it at a dealer? I'd ask them to make you one if you did.

a locksmith MIGHT be able to also to get it to work, but not likely though, very hard to get the "security" info from a manufacture

and personally for my 2g TL, it was only like $20 from the dealer (WITH the key AND being cut), i was expecting something like $50 (but then again they did just copy the original key's "id" onto the new one, but it works so i don't really care how they exactly did it though

check with the dealer as to how much they charge but I was able to:

1) buy a blank key
2) have it cut anywhere (I went to Lowes), this will now allow you to open doors
3) go to an Acura/Honda dealer and see if they will program it, it takes like 5 min. I was lucky and they did it for free.

That's GREAT NEWS to hear!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope I'm as lucky!!! Does it matter what kind of blank key you buy? Does the dealer add the fat part of the key with the chip in it?

Here's what I did, made good with the parts guy and a guy that will do side work. I paid $120 total for 2 keys and all 3 reprogrammed. Bought the keys there too! Buy two blanks, give them a vin and they will cut it, then the parts guy gives it to you, you have to get a service guy to do it, takes 5-10 minutes, it's a computer with Honda software that plugs into your obd II plug, it involves putting the key in turning it to on/off a few times and so forth. But whatever you do don't buy the ebay knock offs because I bought two and the dealer cut it, didn't come out like oem so therefore it wouldn't fit nor open the door.

ok, cool. It sounds like I can get at least one for around $50 and maybe free from what I've read. Much better than the $150-200 I was expecting.

Might be able to just go to a locksmith to get it done for cheaper.

i just done this couple months ago with my 05.
1. get two blanket keys from ebay for $16 (make sure it has the chips and fit the car)
2. bring the blank to the dealer and they will cut and program for you for around $60 (cut and program up to three keys for the same price)

well, thats about right. I work at a dealer they charge 1 hours labor.
This thread is too old to help OP,but for future reference,
our keys can't be programmed in the Parts Dept. Like older TL's .
They have to be done with the HDS.
