I'm still curious if this gets in the way of moving the side mirror at all.

Does it still move through its full range of motion or does it hit the LED at all?

 

It's behind the mirror actuator; it shouldn't hit.
I'll break it down.

Adjusting the mirror all the way up - No chance of hitting the LED. It's moving away and giving more room for the LED.

Adjusting the mirror all the way outward - No chance of hitting the LED. Again, it's giving the LED more room (opposite of coming closer it).

Adjusting the mirror all the way inward - You should not have your mirrors all the way inward while driving anyway, but I installed the mirror glass back on the housing with the mirror all the way inward (that's the state I left it in to pry the mirror glass off the actuator) and it did NOT hit; still room.

Adjusting the mirror downwards (tilt mode) - Probably the one you're worried about since it moves towards the direction of the LED, leaving less room. Still didn't hit the LED. Otherwise when I went into tilt mode, it would have kept clicking in one spot (trying to go down more but it can't), which is not the case.

I was surprised myself that the LED bolt is pretty tall.
You can always get the 11mm version which is 4mm shorter and equally bright just to play it safe.
There are some people that cut down the LED bolt housing even smaller, too.

Oznium wanted to make the aluminum housing big so that it cools the LEDs down, and acts as a heat sink.
The puddle lights are not on long enough to heat up (they turn on for like 15 seconds, then fade out) so heat would not be a problem if you really wanted to cut down the housing.

anyways, that pic wasnt final. I ended up shaving the LED on the top side(its just all plastic anyways) so the led is flush with the bottom.

You might be wondering why I didn't put the hole deeper, and that's because in that crevice on top it'd be impossible to reach the LED in there.
Or if you're wondering why I didn't put it behind the mirror glass....I'm not too sure to be honest. I do remember looking behind the glass and thinking it wouldn't look good in that spot, but I don't remember why I thought that. I think it might have been because of the curvature of the plastic on the bottom, its not as flat at the 04-06 mirrors.

 

Is that a drain hole to the right of the LED?

I tried installing these about a week ago, first thing I did was crack the driver side mirror. I had it off except 1 tab, went for it and CRACK! LOL! After that I stopped. I also bought the 16mm ones, and they are way too big for what I need. I might use them for the bottom side skirt lights instead and buy the 11mm ones.

I have done it back in February on my FX and it looks great. I am not a fan of under side skirt puddle lights on SUVs and this mod fit perfectly on the FX.

Looks great on the TL as well.

 

Why wouldn't you just mount these on the underside of the door card? Better illuminatiion where you will actually step and easier to boot.

 

Because they don't illuminate the ground when you're outside the car getting in that way. And you don't get the cool factor from that

I had to look up "door card". It's another word for door panel.
In that case, myron got the explanation.

Our TLs already have stock door panel lighting, also.
I have LEDs in my door panel lighting, so it lights up a lot when I step OUT of the car.

This mod is for stepping IN to the car.

 

Puddle lights are typically wired such that they operate when the door is open. If you are approaching from the outside of the car you can normally see is a puddle is there or not pretty easy. Either way, once you open the door the light on the mirror will no longer light the ground where you are going to be stepping.

When you get out, the mirror light will be mostly useless as little light will illuminate the area between the door and the seat.

IE if you want snazzy mood lighting, great. If you want a functional puddle light, its in the wrong spot.

 

Puddle lights are typically wired so they come on before you enter your car - when you hit the unlock button.

This is how Lexus does it, this is how Ford does it, this is how Volkswagen does it, and this is how any car with OEM puddle lights does it.

It's not in the "wrong spot" if so many other car companies use the exact same spot.

That's correct - they're not meant for you to see what's on the ground before stepping out. That's what the OEM door panel light is for.

 

bmw door handle LEDs come on when you unlock the car, the door does not have to be open. I can vouch for that fact.

 

Dads 2008 Infiniti EX35 has LED lights in the mirror that come on when he hits the unlock button and they also shine straight down at the ground.

I have custom BMW door handles and Lexus side mirror courtesy lights and retrofitted license plate lights. Does that make me creative?

 

Guitarplayer16, I'm part way through this mod and want to make sure it's as clean as possible. Any advice on how to run the wire into the cabin? Not sure if I use an open spot on the socket connector or run the wire next to the bundle of wire but not through the connectors. Any pics would be appreciated.

Another quick question - I am simultaneously doing the footwell lighting from your other DIY and want to make sure I get the wiring correct. For the footwells, I am tapping into the dome supervisor light, so for the puddle lights, can I just splice another wire into that new wire? I want to avoid putting two t-taps directly on the supervisor wire just because with the MT, it is extremely hard to access.

I am a big fan of Oznium. I was waiting on something that would be a TRULY waterproof, corrosion proof housing. I did 3 sets of puddle lights using different types of lights and different methods. (the ones in the side sills) and water got in every time. It's fine in the summer, it's winter that ruins them. So I gave up for the last 4yrs. waiting on a better solution. I didn't know about this new product. I'd need 10 of these with lenses. My concern is if they are big enough because 16mm is small. If it was double in size it would be perfect.

Yes, you can splice the wire into the footwell wire, that's exactly what I did
It aces a lot of time.

This is the first product I've ordered from Oznium and I'll be ordering from them again. They are an amazing company with great product.

 

After reading this DIY and your footwell DIY here on my lunch break I have build the confidence needed to tackle this.

Up to this point my moto with car installations has been "If its nuts and bolts Ive got it. If it involves wrapping or electrical count me out."

This however looks really simple with the add-a-fuse and the other pieces you have used. Not sure why electrical frightened me so much.

 

it's very easy. When I did this, i didn't have a DIY and I just winged it. I don't like messing with electrical in my car either, hate that stuff but this I tried and it worked perfect. It's pretty neat.

Well after 8hrs of back-breaking labor I finally redid my side sill puddle lights for the 4th time....hopefully the last time. It turned out awesome, better than any other attempt I made. Although the dimensions of the housing themselves are small, the beam that they cast is absolutely perfect for this application. And indeed BRIGHT. These lights are truly quality products that are weather proof, worth every penny. It is perfect for these types of exterior automotive applications, unlike plastic cased garbage of the past. I'm glad technology has caught up with us.

Before anyone asks for pics, let me get to that, I will post them up soon. Thanks once again for the idea!
