Bored stiff late lastnight, I decided to drive up to the Acura Dealership to see if they got any new colors in (TL) to look at. When I arrive there is a BMW 540i parked next to the TL's and a guy walking around looking at the TL's. This was at 1:30 am so I dont think he wanted to be seen by anyone .

We talk, long story shortened, we end up getting into a slight heated conversation about our cars...I was very respectable about his BMW and the excellence that BMW's are known for, but I would not let him start compairing the two and tearing down the TL to make him feel better. So, I get tired of hearing how great his car is and how I was stupid to buy the TL instead of a BMW, at this point I am hot, so then I ask him...Have you seen any 04 TL owners on the BMW lot? He laughed and said nope...I said really? Well...your the 4th BMW owner I've seen at this lot looking at the new TL. He started fumbling around with an excuse and then told me he just wanted to see what it looked like..he hasnt seen one yet. So, again, I ask him...do you have internet? Yup! he says...I said well then you should of been able to see what the car looked like there because its chalked full of great pictures and positive reviews. He's pi$$ed at this point.

He starts searching for the reason to by a BWM instead of the TL and mentions the word "VALUE" I started laughing, which made him more mad. I said please do not talk to me about value when you are driving a $60,000 BMW. He said he had a V8...I said I know...I have a V6 and its still faster. He said if it is then you wouldnt mind a little race? So off to the road we went...pulled up to the stop light and he rolled down his window and told me he was only going to race to the next light and then he needed to get home. So the light turns green...and off we go. Immediately I pull ahead and I am even with his front wheel...it stays that way for almost the whole way...I might have sneaked up to the front of the front fender...but it was very very close. If I hadn't of started so well it would have been a even closer race or a loss.

At the end of the race I am stopped at the 2nd stop light and rolls by and shows me his finger and drives off. Guess thats the BMW salute.

 

And if you had a 6MT, you REALLY would've sent him home mad.

It probably was an older 540i. cuz My brothers 03' 540 beats me everytime. I think it has an extra 20 horses on our TLs. Its pretty nice, but we get more bang for the buck.

 

Who goes and looks at cars at 1:30am? Besides, with all those flourescent lights. I don't think the colors would have shown up that well anyways.
Funny story though...

 

I go all the time...especially after hours...I can take my time and browse without having to worry about car salesmen. Besides...I dont sleep much so its a good place to be when your a car buff like myself.

Considering the horsepower/weight ratio is almost exactly the same between the two, these cars should be close on a staight-away. Sheer horsepower doesn't mean a whole lot. Horsepower/weight is a truer indicator. Since the 540i weighs about 200-300 lbs more, the extra 20 HP doesn't mean much.

My 69 HP motorcycle will cream just about any car out there in almost any race becuase it only weighs 500 pounds. (You can do the math).

 

I love the new TL, but I'm sorry, if you have the money, the 540i, post 2001, is a better car, driving and speed wise. Of course you dont get a lot of the goodies as you do with the TL, and in the snow the TL would dominate, but pure driving, the 540i would kill.

 

Ok...but the new 5 series is downright UGLY. I dont know who came up with that styling but he/she should be fired!!!

 

That would be Chris Bangle. And his designs have caused so much upset among the BMW set that there is a new 7-series facelift coming this year in order to boost sales. I'll have to find the link...

I could have bought the BMW, but I just never liked the interior... Have you seen those buttons ? very ugly...
and the new iDrive is a terrible design, it's having serious problems with people.

My friend wanted to trade in his M3 as soon as I let him drive my 6MT. He was so angry with BMW for not having XM built-in, or Bluetooth network, or DVD-A, etc and paying soooo much more.

the TL has a much ergonomic design, things are where they should be. And don't even talk about comparing Nav.

power is not everything in a car.

 

the new 5 is far from ugly. of course looks are subjective. it is however cheap as hell on the inside and 22k more equipped the same as the tl. this is for the 530. the 545 is over 60. oh and you CANT get the nav or bluetooth yet.

I owned a 540i 6 speed, and it would blow away my 04 TL 5speed. I loved that car, but the extra $25k doesn't warrant what you get.

I don't feel NEARLY as steady or quick in the TL as I did in the the BMW, but maybe I should reserve judgement until I can ditch these terrible EL42s.

They are comparable, yet very different cars in a lot of ways. The RWD, strong low-end V8, and huge maintenance costs separate them.

I sold a Benz for this TL. Before that I had a 740iL. Both were nice cars but pricey for the $'s. I was pretty serious about picking up one of the new 540's UNTIL I saw the inside. BMW has done a HUGE injustice to that car when they started using the cheaper 3-series plastic trim & such on the interior of the car. I'm certain that BMW is making more money per car on the new 5-series vs. the old but IMHO they blew it big time on the interior. TL ROCKS!

Well, the 1st two items can be added to the M3 with ease. DVD-A would be impossible unless going with a new head unit. But the BMW nav screen are the best screen used in any automobile ( well save the maybach and rolls). Adding a DVD player to the factory nav is much easier in a bimmer.

R U kidding? My friends new M3 navi screen sucks. Its like 6"! Our 8" screen totally dwarfs theirs. And the color of their daytime background for their navi is like piss yellow. Soooo Fugly! and their joystick is lshaped like a freaking nipple nub. lol. Our screens are hands down, best on the market IMHO. It dwarfs my dad's LX470's 6" as well. and my moms P.O.S. 4" square Navi in her Benz. I looooooooove my navi. Soooo Big! Heres the truth guys...... SIZE DOES MATTER!

The new TL navi's resolution and colors stinks.

The one on the BMW are far more clear, color, and contrast are way better. Try to play DVD on new 2004 TL nav screen and tell me how good the screen looks.

Also, the BMW night back ground is orange. There is no day time background.

I stand by my comments that BMW screens are better.
Size only matters if you can get good resolution out of it. I would not be suprised if new TL screen is actually cheaper.

I have been given the finger by several people that I have beat in races. Where in hell are these people coming from; it is like I have personally beaten them personally. After winning one race the guys in the other car wanted me to stop and fight them.

I found it very amusing that you took a picture right on top of TL screen and about 3-5 feet away from BMW nav.

You are beyond smoking crack. BTW, none of the BMW background are yellow, it's either brown of blue. So the crack is getting to you, mut be blind as an owl.

The funniest thing is that even at some distance a apart, you already can see how good the resolution is on the BMW nav screen. Your picture of TL navi screen proved my point that the resolution on the TL navi screen is off.

I will post a picture of my BMW navi screen with PS2 attached. The picture will show you how detail, colorful, and bright the BMW navi screen really is. I will upload it later today.

It's not about the size. It's about color, contrast, and the glass that the screen uses. BMW navi screen is just better than anyone elses (save the maybach and rolls).

 

Uhm, they're both about the same distance away from the screen. The difference is the SIZE of the picture. It would be a good bet to assume the smaller picture is not something that he took himself, and the distance from the screen was replicated by him when taking the TL shot. As far as clarity goes, well his camera is clearly not that great as even the buttons are blurry. Hard to judge resolution like that.

 

ok, smartass. The blurriness was just my camera and it was really late at night. Here, I retook it for you. This is crystal clear and way better than your POS BMW navi. And as for saying that the picture is biased towards the TL, LOL, THAT IS MY POINT. They were shot at the exact same distance. The BMW Screen is just THAT MUCH smaller. it truly is that much bigger than your navi screen, an extra 2". I EVEN TOOK THE PICTURE FARTHER AWAY THAN THE PIC OF THE BMW NAVI THIS TIME.
