Is $1,250 good for a clutch change???

My clutch has been dying out for a while now and i finally need to fix it. My mechanic says for $1,250 he will change out the clutch (oem parts of course) and "recut" the flywheel. THis inlcudes parts and labor and he is a very trusted mechanic. Is it a good deal??

You can't cut a dual-mass flywheel (because the friction surface moves. If the flywheel is damaged it will have to be replaced. You can get the OEM parts directly from LUK (the maker of the Acura parts) for a bit less than Honda or Acura.

Clutch kit part # 08-047. $150-$180 shipped: http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1...w=1296&bih=895
Flywheel part # DMF062. $270-$280 shippedl: http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1...w=1296&bih=895

Get a labor quote from your mechanic before you tell him any of this. That way you can always opt to buy the parts yourself and bring them in for install. This will keep him from padding his prices to compensate.

I just got my clutch and flywheel replaced last week. 94eg is rite, you can not resurface our flywheels. You would have to buy a new one if yours is damaged. I ordered the luk clutch kit and flywheel for $560 shipped and had the acura dealer install it for $840

My clutch install cost $2200 from an Acura dealership...NOT including the flywheel. I called about 6 dealerships in my area and they were all around that price too

This is the only complaint I have for MT, it gona cost you an arm and a leg for new clutch. Some one might be lucky that original clutch will last 200K miles.

Wow clutch replacement is high on the TL's. Too bad it's not your standard $300 civic clutch swap

You should read the instructions for replacing it. It's completely insane. You can bet that nobody but Honda and Acura are following proper procedure either.

Thx for the good info guys. I'm currently at 130k. I would say I have been feeling problems for the last 10k. 130k on a clutch seems good to me.

For those that have already replaced the clutch, how good did it feel driving on the new clutch? Big difference or not so much? I hope it feels awesome as this car has no other issues so it should feel revived. Now, if i could just get this piece of shit ECU to work consistently i will be fine.

To give you an idea, I was quoted $600 in labor from a Honda tech to do the job. Factor in the flywheel/clutch and other misc items such as the rear main seal (may as well while you're in there) and 1250 seems fair.

Actually, included in that price was like $350 worth of other work that I had done. But still, $1800-$1900 was in line with what every other dealership was quoting me. I'm sure I could have done it for much less, but after hearing how difficult of a job this clutch is, I had no problem making sure an Acura dealership performed the work properly.

Yes-Great price.

When my clutch was slipping on my 06 MT TL the dealer wanted $2500. Thats one of the reasons I tradded it in on a new LOADED Camaro 2SS/RS LS3 Manual. Not many places near me would do it any cheaper then $2500. Thats NUTS !!!

I have an appointment tomorrow morning (tuesday) to have my clutch replaced at Joe Rizza Acura in Orland Park, IL. I called a couple dealerships and one of them was insane on the price. $2500 without flywheel!!!!! and about $3500 with. That was Continental Acura in Naperville...what a joke. I then called Joe Rizza and they told me $1400+tax without flywheel and they wont know about that until they get it apart.
My car is an 07 Type S with only 73K miles. Why my clutch is slipping now I have no clue. It has only been slipping for about a week and thats only when about 3/4+ throttle is applied. So I have been driving it normally so hopefully my flywheel is still good. Had I known clutches were this expensive and prone to failing early I would have second guessed getting a 6mt TL.

The same shop people are saying gave you inflated dyno numbers. I would ask them how they resurfaced a dual mass flywheel. $90 worth of sandpaper.

humm TL flywheel is not resurface able, so I guess its a dual mass just like the one found earlier on 93-95 6spd Legend? but anyway People want ridiculous amount of money for clutch change. OP why just get a new flywheel then (if you can afford it). I know $1200 is alot of money to spend.

Yup just did one of these myself a couple months ago. just under $2000 for the tranny and did labor myself.

Same thing I plan on doing to the TL when its time. Would rather buy special tools then to pay 700.00 in labor charges.

A so called reputable shop that charged you for something but can't give you a good answer on what they did does not sound very honest to me. Especially since it can't be done.

I would have them take it out again and show me what it looks like. At the very least get your $90 back.

If you can't get at least 200,000 miles out of your clutch, then barring things out of your control (poor design, inferior parts, faulty installation, living in a city like San Francisco) you're doing something wrong.

Southern, since you're actually knowledgeable on this stuff...
I have a question...

My clutch pedal seems to have different "feels" to it depending...I've rebled the system and it got a new slave (with checkvalve removed) about 3 years ago...inside the cabin, when it rains, my clutch makes an annoying squeaking noise. I normally have to get in there and lube up the spring, and then spray some silicone grease into where the pedal goes through the firewall. I press it in a little by hand and stick the red spray tube in that little slit and it alleviates the noise...
I have very little slack in the pedal (I've adjusted the little nut where the ignition sensor goes on)
I've noticed that sometimes, the pedal feels harder than other times when changing gears...ALWAYS goes into gear...

Is the master going?!!? Only 76K on the clock so far and I do drive hard sometimes, but not often.

Just annoying...

Could be. Also, a stiff pedal can happen right after hard gear changing at high RPM's. I can't say for certain that your master cylinder is going out... perhaps others who have had this happen to them could weigh in for you. But it kinda sounds like it.

Well, I kinda have the if it ain't broke, don't fix it approach.
But thank you...
just find it weird...stayed at stepdad's beach condo this weekend...they have this full surround pressurized water thing you drive through to get the saltwater off...drive through and immediately with the water shooting in the bottom my pedal gets noisy...dries off quickly and by end of the trip down, it's gone...but still annoying.

If this is truely with OEM parts meaning ..... OEM CLUTCH, PP, THROWOUT BEARING, and FLYWHEEL along with labor... its a pretty good price!!!!

i just finish buying all the parts and OEM parts alone are pretty costly... not to mention i bought them from TIM @ oemacuraparts.com (HONDACURAWORLD) and i went ahead and bought a new slave and master cylinders.

How can you just say thats a "pretty good price". There is no way in hell an acura dealership will only charge $1250 to do a complete clutch change with all parts including flywheel. The flywheel ALONE costs $812 from the dealership so im pretty sure labor, clutch disc, pressure plate, bearing and other misc parts are going to cost a little more than $438 bucks lol.

I just got a call back from my dealership on my clutch job. He said the flywheel looks pretty good so they are not going to replace it thank god. I figured it would be fine since my car only has 70K miles and only slipped 3 times before I scheduled the appointment. He said im looking at about $1400+ tax for the complete job without flywheel. Im fine with it.....and I get to drive around in a brand new 2012 TL SH-AWD advance for a few days. Im not gonna wanna give that car back, its amazing! :-)

Don't kid yourself. Just because some dealerships charge $800, doesn't mean it's an $800 part. Here it is for $500 from an Acura dealership.

http://www.acurapartswarehouse.com/o...0-RCA-006.html

And just to reiterate, this Acura flywheel is made by LUK. You can get the same exact OEM/Acura flywheel in an LUK box for $300 or less. In my eyes that makes this a $300 flywheel with a $500 markup (in your example).

So don't...just keep the 2012...at least it will only have cost you $1400...

Quick Reply: Is $1,250 good for a clutch change???
