I ended up sacrificing one of my cup holders for a phone mount. Added a dual cup holder insert to get back to two. Very study cup holder for my Yeti drink or coffee mugs for traveling. Dual holder work pretty good for holding my wallet, face mask, or wife's cell phone if I don't use it from drinks. Same set-up in my MDX; but, I use an induction phone holder for my iPhone.
I find cup holder phone mount positioning the phone too low for my taste. I like having it set at the higher position so I can still see the road in front. Looking down on the phone may not be a good idea.
Low mounted mount works for me because I'm not a big smartphone user and only had two my entire life (iPhone 4S and 6S+). I don't use my phone for navigation and I can see the larger Acura navi with limited graphics better with my old eyes. I usually search addresses on my phone with the Acuralink app and send to the Acura navi. I also use XM radio mostly and switch to bluetooth audio stream occasionally on +8 hour road trips. I do have Waze up on my smartphone when on the hwy for the police and hazard warnings announced over the Krell speaker system. Not a big email or text person either. Probably 99% of time, the cup holder phone mount is just a secure place for my phone.
I'm not a fan of the cup holder mounts either. I like the cup holder lid closed when not used. I may have to go with one of those custom Proclip mount or windshield mount as the RLX don't have a good place to mount a phone.

Well made points for your setup, definitely makes it work as you need it.
