Maintenance Reminder Question
Maintenance Reminder Question
A bit of an odd question. My dealer gives me two free oil changes and a tire rotation during the first year of new car ownership. It looks like I will not need my A1 until month 9 or 10. I have to go in for something minor in the next few weeks, so I figured I would let them change the oil early, since fresh oil is generally a good thing. But should they reset the oil life indicator to reflect the new oil, or leave it alone so it will ask for the full A1 (oil + rotation) at the previously correct time?
I don't know if it is an urban legend or fact, but i do recall reading something about Honda using "break-in oil" that is high in additives for the factory fill. The story goes that this special oil should be left in until the Maintenance Minder tells you to change it because it helps the break in of the engine and sealing of the cylinder walls etc. I did a Google search on break in oil and there seems to be camps on both sides of the issue. Anyway, it might be something to look into.
I'm old school and I remember changing oil after 1000 miles on a new car to "get rid of the initial break-in crud". Today, I believe engine tolerances are much different than they used to be and for that reason, I default to the recommendation of the manufacturer and plan to change oil only when the Maintenance Minder tells me to.
Just my opinion.

A little bit more research...apparently the factory oil is normal oil, but the engine parts are treated with lube high in Molybdenum during assembly and it is recommended that this treatment be left in the engine until the first scheduled oil change as determined by the Maintenance Minder.
I don't know if that helps or simply confuses the issue further??
