I've never experienced this odor with my RLX, or any other more recent Acura we've had. My fillup technique is to let the nozzle click off automatically, and then squeeze again (slower flow) till it clicks a second time, then I'm done. Seems to work fine with all my recent cars. Only time I've had issues doing this was with an '06 Pilot we had, that for some reason didn't always tell the nozzle when to shut off (so if I wasn't paying attention it would overflow). But even after that, no odor inside the garage when parking it....

Also, if you live in very hilly/mountainous areas, stop after the first click. Steep grades and overfull tanks do not mix well. Man, can't wait for my first EV.

I go hundreds of miles of local driving before a gallon of gas is used many times in my Plug-in Hybrid. I'm hooked. You don't want to know what my average mpg is now. I learned how to maximize my hyper mile activities and performance capabilities in my RLX Sport Hybrid, which has absolutely translated to the Volvo. Acura better bring it with the new MDX Type S or my MDX Sport Hybrid will be my last Acura product. The Volvo is just that good.

Since the RLX is dead (for now), I'm waiting to see if the next gen MDX hybrid will have a plug-in option. I really like my 19 MDX hybrid; but, 24-26 combined mpgs I'm getting is only slightly better than the 3.5L version. Seems like there is plenty of power with the 3 electric motor; but, not enough battery power for sustained use.

I wonder why Acura programed the MDX hybrid system differently from the RLX? They both come in at only 100 lbs apart; but, I get way more EV usage from the RLX (28-30 mpg combined) compared to the MDX (24-26 mpg combined) on the same routes. I even get EV mode in reverse in the RLX and I've never seen that with the MDX (3.0L always restarts in reverse). You would think the MDX would use EV mode just as much as the RLX in 100% city driving of 25-45 mph; but, it doesn't.

My wife's MDX Sport Hybrid gets the same or sometimes better mileage than my RLX Sport Hybrid. mrgold35, I suspect you have already checked that your wife is not driving around in Sport Mode, but you may also want to check which IDS driving mode your wife's car is in (the button just below the round D/S button), as that may be causing the lower mileage numbers. My wife's car is always in the Comfort mode and her car seems to spend more time in EV mode than my RLX.

If that doesn't change things, then maybe your wife is just a more aggressive driver than my wife. LOL.

The wife has the RLX and she handed down the MDX to me. The MDX is always in Sports mode because tighter suspension feel; which, I like better compared to Comfort/Normal modes. Kinda wish Acura would make a separate knob for the electronic dampers like the old Gen MDX/ZDX magnetic struts/shocks ADS system had. I've always kept my 11 MDX Adv ADS in Sports mode, add Eibach lowering springs+Progress RSB to our 08 RDX, and our TSX has A-Spec suspension+Progress RSB. Even my wife complained about the RLX soft suspension and wanted to know what is out there to upgrade to something more sporty (looking Mugen; but, really expensive @+$2500).

My family loves Acuras. At the moment, we have a 2010 TSX, 2014 RDX, 2015 TLX (mine), and 2018 RLX Hybird (dads). My dad loves his RLX (replaced 09 TL).

We did the Legend rebadge, and my dad tells me he gets people going up to him at the gas station all the time asking about it! He loves the car and the drive. Only negatives are infotainment is outdated and depreciation is terrible. We don't care, we sill love the car!!

Sorry, my bad in confusing which car you were driving and which your wife is driving.

It is possible that when you drive your MDX Sport Hybrid in the IDS Sports Mode, that setting also has an influence on the shift points and how often the car will go into EV mode, thus causing the disappointing fuel economy that you are experiencing. The Acura site says:
The Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) enables you to choose the feel of the dynamic responses within your vehicle. With a button located by the shifter, you can change from the “Normal” setting to “Sport” to increase steering feel and quicken throttle response.

I suspect this change in throttle response in giving you better performance, but hurting your mileage.

So I've toyed with adding the Legend badge to the wife's RLX just to confuse folks - but the actual placement of the Legend badge is on the trunk lid (driver's side), not where the RLX badge is located on US models. Just a nit :-)

Funny you mention that, putting the emblem on the left was the original plan. We had our custom auto shop I know personally do things like window tint and dash cam, and I had them do the badge removal and it was supposed to go on the left. The owner called me and said after taking off the RLX emblem, he noticed a tiny scratch where the RLX was. They probably accidentally scratched it taking it off. So he asked if I wanted to leave it in the same place, so thats why we put it on the right side, that was not our original plan. HOWEVER, now that its done, Im glad it happened because in my opinion I really like the way it looks.

I wonder if Acura would have sold more RLXs if they called it the Acura Legend instead? People still ask me what kinda of car I have and I don't think when I tell them RLX it registers in their brain.

Acura would have sold a SH%& Ton more RLX's if they called them Legends. I used to work at a dealer in Southern California for the past 3 years. NO ONE coming in the door knew what an RLX was. My dealership hated the RLX because we could never sell them. We sold a 2017 sport hybrid brand new in summer of 2019. It just sat. And they just recently sold in the past few months 2 brand new 2018 RLX tech they had sitting around. What a pity.

Calling it a legend and having a cool commercial showing the powertrain derived from the NSX would have moved those cars, but Acura has given up, literally.

Acura says supposedly Legend is coming back in next couple years, lets pray they don't mess it up!

New Legend Rumored in A Couple Years

Hi

Could you give details on where you got information on a rebirth of a true Acura Legend in the next few years?

Thanks

Its just rumors, nothing specific. Acura stands for "Always Catching Up Rarely Ahead" so don't hold your breath. Right now only vehicles we know about is 2021 TLX and 2021 MDX redesign, and 2022 will be the Type S version of the TLX with 355 HP, that info we know....the rest is just speculation.

I thought the TLX Type S is coming this spring? The 21's aren't even out yet. Guessing 2021 will be an 8 month production run then skip to 2022 early?

Legend

I do not think the lackluster sales in the RLX have anything to do with the name. Hack for years I believed RL stood for revised Legend. I only found out about a year ago that RL stood for refined luxury. And in that last sentence I believe is the Crux of the root of the problem with Acura and the RLX. I believe that Acura lost most of their RLX customer base when they chose years ago to give up on all wheel drive and replace it with PAWS. By the time they brought back all wheel drive and only in a sport hybrid I think the damage was already done. Add to this the fact that they really never gave customers a lot of choices with the RL and the RLX. How many shades of grey can you make. I think they failed to come out with some really vibrant colors and for that matter there was also a lack of interior choices. Basically black Greystone or Seacoast and for a while that awful mocha chocolate coffee whatever you want to call it. Years ago I would have loved to buy an RLX in grigio with a Seacoast interior but it was not available. Also I think one of the real nice colors is the steel Grey but you can't get it with a Seacoast interior it has to be black or grey Stone. And I for one I'm very unhappy with the fact that every car has a black dashboard and side panels and rear deck. They should have offered either the same color as the interior or a complementary color like my 2009 RL did. Technology-wise the car is phenomenal but in Aesthetics I think it still leaves a lot to be desired. You can't even change the wheel choice that much. After I bought the car I spend another $1,200 on new Wheels which now make the car look awesome. I'll post a picture from my phone once I'm done with a post.

but the real reason for my post today is because I'm terribly embarrassed but I must tell the truth. I started this post a few weeks ago because I thought that there was a gas smell coming from my brand new or RLX in the garage, and I thought I had over filled the tank and compromised the charcoal canister. Since we are currently doing a lot of renovation on her home I parked the car outside the garage for a couple of days so I wouldn't scratch it carrying wood. To my surprise the gas smell in the garage remained so I knew that wasn't the car. I'm very happy to report that there's nothing wrong with my new car but I did find something wrong with the portable generator that was sitting right next to the car in the corner. Apparently last time we use the generator which I think was about six months ago we forgot to shut the fuel valve off. It waited 5 or 6 months to start the leak but the gas was coming out through the carburetor intake into the air filter and onto the floor in the garage and evaporating. I am also happy to report that there's nothing wrong with the generator because today is the first day we've had power in a week from the tropical storm.

and last but not least my wife and I took a trip to Pennsylvania this weekend to see my sister. It's about a 2 and 1/2 hour drive and on the way home we got gas just before entering the interstate highway in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. Traffic was pretty light and I was unbelievably surprised to see my RLX average about 32.4 miles to the gallon for the trip which was basically on pretty flat roads with some hills not too steep. While on an exit off ramp onto another interstate highway I managed to snap a picture it's a little blurry but I'll upload it after I post this. I hit a maximum at one point of 33.2 miles per gallon. simply awesome

Thanks for the update, Richard - I like the wheels you chose and I absolutely love the color of your RLX. Back in the day when I got my 2014, I waited for a while after they debuted and so I had NO choice of color and ended up with the "looks dirty 2 minutes after you washed it ", Black. It is a really nice black with specs of blue and silver sprinkled throughout, but upkeep is a pain. My previous RL was closer to your RLX and it always looked clean. Great choice!

As I've said before, the Sport Hybrid's fuel economy played almost ZERO part in my decision to purchase one and yet five+ years later, I'm still obsessed with the great mileage that I get. I drive so little that mileage is completely insignificant, yet I seem to just enjoy seeing how far I can go on a tank.

Congrats again - Enjoy.

Love the wheels. Great choice to step away from stock, but not too far out there. Looks elegant!

That red really pops! I love the RL/RLX for a daily since no one really has them. I see maybe one of two in the Las Vegas area. I think this will probably be my new daily. LOL

I just upgraded from a 2014 RLX to a 2019 RLX Hybrid. Much better car all the way around.

I’ve been in a Legend/RL/RLX since 1990!

MOD EDIT: Sale item removed since sales are only allowed in the Marketplace.
