MHI turbo upgrade is on!

Took about 4 hours -
still have a lot of tinkering to do
havent run it hard yet- gonna have Derek (IMW) tune it cause this is above my pay grade as far as tuning goes
pretty straightforward install though-
Still waiting for the prl titanium inlet so for now the stock plastic intake is on it

lots of little issues like the coolant line on the turbo-the heat shield- the inlet tube rubbing on wastegate actuator-
the turbo and the down pipe are fairly easy-
gonna give it a good run this week on my work commute

It’s an upgrade from the type r turbo direct from Mitsubishi-
major difference in size of compressor/turbine and inducer/exducer
seems to spool fairly quickly although def not like stock rdx mini turbo -
After I took the stock turbo off and compared them you would be amazed at how small the stock turbo turbine wheel is it’s only about the size of a half dollar which is amazing on how to get that much horsepower out of that tiny little thing
The new MHI turbo definitely is a little softer below 2500 RPMs but nothing to complain about. Anything above 3000 all the way to 6900 RPMs it pulls like nothing else-Derek from IMW started tuning it it-
I had a max of 25 psi from the old turbo and that was pushing its limits this one will spike to 30 psi without even hesitating and the horsepower is unreal and it’s not even tuned yet I can’t wait!

Any updates on this? How’s the power after the tune?

So far so good-Derek is amazing with the tuning and his knowledge-
Have a few thousand miles on it it all is good-no issues with anything (knock wood)
still waiting for my prl titanium inlet though-
also gonna go with meth injection as the fuel octane is now the limiting factor for any more power-

Just ordered mine as well, hoping to have it on and tuned before July 24th for the drive to Import Alliance in Nashville. Great events if you've never been: https://importalliance.org/

After shaving down the wastegate actuator body a little with a sanding wheel on the dremel everything went right back in with the oem inlet and oem CTR turbo cover. Still looks like nothing changed other than the O2 sensor location when you pop the hood. Car is on the 4th revision with Derek and feeling fantastic, TONS more power up top than the factory turbo could muster, and driving around town normally is essentially unchanged. I even noticed an MPG bump on a road trip this last weekend since the car doesn't see boost quite as quick. 28.6MPG over a couple hundred miles including mountains from Nashville to Atlanta.

I love it, so smooth. Need some more miles on it, but for the few miles after I burned, it felt great!

So it is the parameter "Throttle Dampening" that shuts down the ability to do boosted launches?

seems that way-
without it would only build maybe 1 psi or so

With derek almost done on the meth tuning I have come to a brick wall-
boost is limited to about 27 psi because of the MAP sensors on our car ( theres 2)
altthough there are 4 bar sensors that will bolt on the k tuner software does not support them-
there is no way around this yet-
initially I was seeing spikes of 31-32 psi but it would throw a p0238 code for the map sensor out of range-so the boost had to be scaled down-
So as it stands there’s no more to get out of this engine until ktuner enables the map sensor scaling tables for us-
I’m willing to bribe them if I have to!

@Rob5150 Aside from the meth injectors have your upgraded any internals for the added boost / HP?

Thats insane man, thanks for letting me know... I am eyeballing this kit to do an install with the PRL intercooler, Ktuner v2 (phearable stage 3), and custom air intake followed by an e-tune by Derek....any advice on where to purchase most of the items required or what additional things I should keep in mind.

Granted I had methanol injected so it’s a bit different
but I convinced that the tuning from Derek is what made it survive-
i was running 32 psi and need the upgraded map and boost sensors

im considering installing the MHI Stage 2, along with the PRL Intercooler, RV6 downpipe, all myself…. For someone limited in there car mods to very elementary things, is this too much to take on?

I was thinking everything mostly bolts right on but could be getting in way over my head.
