Running Board Install

Has anyone tried installing the OEM running board? If so, just wondering if it's fairly simple. Thanks!!

Below is the "book" install time allotted to the dealer techs (last one listed) - so just under an hour and this is install instructions - http://www.urvi.net/forumfiles/SB/BII07802-07.PDF
I've seen your question asked a couple of times, but haven't seen anyone answer that they have done it themselves.

I did the install myself. Bought the running board for $550 and saves almost $500 from dealer labor.

It took me an hour to install because I was extra careful. I had to cut out out holes in the plastic molding.

I will upload a few pictures.

Running board pics. I didn’t remove the plastic under cover. I use a sharp knife to cut around the perforated square.

Cut around the line

Yes, installing the mount brackets was the easy part. As for the cutting just take your time with a sharp box cutter. Make a few small cuts around and slowly go around it. I was rushing so the cut wasn’t a square as you can see😄.

The hardest part was mounting the running board over the brackets. I did it all by myself. Get someone to hold the board level or get a small stool to rest it on. Do not over tighten the bolts. Leave it a bit lose so you have wiggle room. Once everything is in the right place and mounted tighten up the bolts.

Good luck!!

Hats off to doing it yourself. That was my intention, but after looking at the install instructions...;just took it to the dealer.
Out of running boards, mud flaps (the rears anyway), heated steering wheel and winter floor mats....I have successfully installed the floor mats myself. I suck!
My next project is to get the roof rails...and maybe install those myself??? At least I now the crossbars will be easy. I would probably just leave the cross rails installed...but still worry about them creating some whistling sound.

Question for those with these running boards…

Is there enough step to use them to reach something on the roof with the door closed? They look narrow. My MDX running boards I would use all the time to reach my cargo carrier, so curious if these are only useful for getting in the car when the door is open, or can I get a decent foothold on them?

I would say yes...I just did it. Might depend on what shoes/boots you wearing. I had tennis shoes on but thought a big round-toed boot or something might be a tight fit. Clearly these are not the landing strips on the side of my LR3...but that's why I like them. They seem pretty effective at keeping the endless winter road stream of water/rocks/salt from going all over the side of the car, along with the little mud flaps.

Thanks!

Thank you for this! My wife is too short and she needs to jump onto the seats and slide in. She is petite, but I worry about edges of seat getting wrinkled. So I will definitely install this around XMAS as a gift to myself.

I installed my wife's running board on her 2018 Highlander and it took me like 2 hrs.

I'm not a car person. So I recommend people to DIY on this.

Please stick to OEM. I bought a cheap EBAY aftermarket for the 2018 Highlanded. Metal is cheap and light. I learned my mistake.
