I have tried several vent holders and very much disliked the airflow blockage. The dash console doesn't provide many mount locations that do not block buttons.
ProclipUSA has a descent idea but I again it puts the phone in front of the vent and Start/Stop Idle Inhibitor button. So I set out to create my own mounting bracket to put a holder on. $6 flat metal and a dremel plus a small foam rubber part wrapped in vinyl
1. figuring out where and how: underneath console lighting has to be avoided
2. drilled holes and screwed bracket to start bending to shape. extra length helped form part.
3. top bend is the flat "mounting" area for actual holder of choice. small lip on end is to help bracket lip over the side leather on console. This is to help keep the wiggles down over bumps. If I did it over, I would keep this lip from ending on a hole for appearances but it works as is.
4. materials on hand: strap rubber flooring and some 3M 2080 vinyl wrap I have also used for reducing glare around the console so this matches exactly. will be visible in later photos. The rubber matting is just a bit too thick so I cut it to 3/16-ish inch thick.
5. Wrapping it up. This is the back side so rubber is between wrap and metal.
6. Dry fit. That dimple is an intentionally located hole. the idea is to place phone holder on top of hole and screw it to bracket from below. (next pic)
7. bracket screwed in and with holder screwed to it. I wrapped vinyl on top of that screw to protect the leather.
8. My perfect placement, works for me. Doesn't block the sir and can activate Idle Stop inhibitor, etc. Knee can rest on padded bracket.
9. All important passenger view. Simple small 1"x1" surface to mount your holder of choice. You can see the anti-glared chrome using same vinyl.
The whole point of CarPlay and AA is to not use your physical phone while driving to minimize the distraction. For me there is no need for a phone holder, just plug in, forget and use Siri as necessary.
Thank you for the PSA on what & how carplay works. Thanks but no thanks. While you are just plugging it in, I am just slotting my phone into my holder and moving right along.
I have a desire to use my phone how I want; which by the way, carplay does NOT work. No, I am not texting while driving. Yes I can and do use bluetooth to make calls using steering wheel buttons and all that jazz.
If you have nothing to say about the bracket itself, why must you chastise others. I see this all the time on other threads... "I have this issue and here is a solution" ... others: "why don't you just not do that." That is exactly judging.
And there is the retort of the small minded. Of course the bracket is home made. Again I just don't see your need to tell me how Carplay works. Just move on. But I see this conversation is high-jacked by those that feel big and important by using "butt hurt". So have at it. Feel awesome about yourself and I will go on not plugging my phone into Carplay as you suggested without knowing my circumstances.
Very nice DIY. Thanks for sharing this. I did use a vent mount until AA was added through an early OTA software update on my '19, but it DID impede the airflow some.
