Where to buy 5.1 music content?

I’m very much a newbie, & just bought our Advanced RDX today.

I’n trying to find out how to go about getting 5.1 music content that I convert into the proper files & structure so I can then play them in the RDX. Are DTS cd’s no longer made? Same question for DVD-A’s? Is there a way to search amazon? eBay?

I want to get a few discs to start the process in learning how to make the appropriate conversions.

Thanks

Sadly, the 5.1 market has pretty much tanked. When the new formats were introduced (DTS-CDs, DVD-Audio's and SACDs), the players and software were pretty hard to find and by the time they started pin-pricking the market, the public discovered downloading, MP3's, and file sharing. The auto manufacturers were very slow to adopt if at all (face it, Acura's 2004 introduction of DVD-A playback was 4 years too late). Titles were far and few between and many never came out.

Today, you can find SACD's if you look hard enough, BluRay audio sorta fizzled, and DVD-A is a very rare occurrence. Your best bet is to check eBay, and when something new in 5.1 comes out that you are remotely interested in it's best to pre-order it and get it right away, as soon it will be selling on eBay for big bucks.

Check the link in my signature for a place where there's a lot of info on 5.1 audio, both old, new, and stuff that's coming out soon.

There are still some DVD-A available on Amazon, depending on your music taste. Steven Wilson did several remixes of classic rock albums, such as Jethro Tull's Aqualung, Rush-2112 and others as well as many of Porcupine Tree's releases. I have most off of the Porcupine Tree DVD-As.

Does the RDX play the high res layer of the DVD-A disc? There are usually a few different layers: Advanced res 2 ch and 5.1 ch, plus DD 5.1 that plays in all DVD players.
Edit: There's not a player in the RDX, correct?

I have a Lexus with the Mark Levinson sound system. While it supports DVD-A disc's, getting the correct layer to play is hit or miss. I need to set the parking brake and go into the audio menu. Then, if the hi res format is displayed, I chose it and go. It's not always visible, so it just plays the DD 5.1 layer. That said, the RDX supports lossless FLAC files, which can be 5.1 ch. You just have to convert your DVD-A's and SACD's, which is not that difficult anymore. During my research of the 2019 RDX, I confirmed it had no problem playing 2 ch FLAC files up to 192kHz/24bit. I did not test the surround capability, but would imagine it will play, since the sample rates are usually lower.

Here are a couple sites where you can purchase DVD-A and SACD disc's:

Elusive Disc - Hardware, Accessories, SACDs, Vinyl LPs, DVD-As and MORE! Call us (800)-782-3472
https://store.acousticsounds.com/

Amazon also has some, but they're harder to find. DVD-A format is pretty much dead, but SACD is still going pretty strong.

5.1 surround FLACs can be purchased from HDTracks, Super HiRez and 7Digital. 5.1 surround FLACs can also be extracted from SACDs that have 5.1 content. You will need an Oppo BDP-103 or BDP-105 Universal Disc Player in order to to extract the 5.1 files to your computer as DSD files. The DSD files can then be converted to FLACs with XLD or a similar program. Put the 5.1 FLACs on a flash drive and you are all set.

You must not have kept up on the latest players that support SACD conversion. My Sony BDP-S590 works well, as do a few other cheap older Sony models and some Pioneers.

Below, is a link to a how-to thread. The title is a little outdated, as Sony also has working models. Lots of good info, if you can get through all the repetitive posts:

I don't think so. I've been trying to get them to sell 5.1 download for YEARS.

I miss the disc players in the cars. It was much easier than. I had an 05 RL with the ELS DVD-A player and it was the absolute best car audio system I have ever heard. There were a number of fantastic discs. If you can find anything by Steely Dan and/or Donald Fagen you can rest assured the sound will be spectacular. Also the first (and maybe only album) by Toy Matinee was probably the best engineered DVD-A audio disc I ever heard. The Lord of the Rings complete soundtrack was released in DVD-A as well and it was another wonderful release. The Captain and Me by the Doobie Brothers was also very good. Hope you can find some discs you like.

I have Toy Matinee on both DVD-A and DTS-CD.. great music form Kevin Gilbert (with a young Sheryl Crow). I also have most everything Steely Dan released in DVD-A, which isn't much. They did produce some quad releases.

I also miss the disc player, especially since the USB playback can be hit or miss. The '12 TL Advance and the RLX with the Krell system were really great listening compartments!

Angry Acura and my dealer have no knowledge of a demo usb drive with 5.1 music

I called the one 800 number Customer Service for Acura and they had no idea so I called my dealership and they asked three people and they had no knowledge of any kind of USB thumb drive that has demo music on it to show the 5.1 ELS stereo system in the new RDX. I find it frustrating and disappointing that pushing the new ELS stereo system in this car and they have no way of demonstrating it with any kind of music. I asked the guy from my dealership well how do you demonstrate the stereo system of this car they said oh we just turn on the radio and I mentioned that’s not really demonstrating the full capability of a 5.1 surround sound system in the car don’t you have a demonstration usb drive with 5.1 music files on it.

Now that the new RDX does not come with a physical disc drive, there used to be DVD demo disc’s on older models that they used to give with the car so you can hear the 5.1 surround system. I just find it a bit irritating that there’s no way to hear the system in it’s glory. There are tons of YouTube videos showing the creator as well as representatives of Acura in the car showing a demonstration of how the sound is so they had to be a thumb drive or something out there that people can get. So if anyone can help me out....I super appreciate it....thanks

I can appreciate your frustration as I have also been down both of those paths also. I do not know how this demo can just disappear so completely.

OK, so I got some of my favorite music on Blue Ray audio, and am waiting for the delivery of the Alan Parson’s Project in 5.1.

This morning I tried to save a Yes CD in Apple Lossless and my system won’t play it. There is no sound at all, though the song is “playing”. I put the Neural stuff off like recommended, but still no sound.

So, what kind of drive do I need to capture the 5.1 effects of the music and put it on my thumb drive. I am missing a step here somewhere. Any help will be appreciated.

So, I bought a Pioneer BluRay drive, USB to my MacBookPro. Bought some software to play the BluRay and was able to convert and save as a 5.1 file for Fragile by Yes. It sounds amazing! WOW! I think I like this.

Great source. I get my Tull 5.1 from there along with many other progressive rock bands. Riverside did a 5.1 release of Love, Fear and the Time Machine.. a very well done album.

I ordered 5 different albums from Burningshed.com/. Very easy to shop and check out. It should be interesting to see how long it will take to get here. I have ordered from Spain, Italy, Poland and Lithuania with no problems whatsoever.

Yes, there are a couple of programs you can use to convert the content where it can be played on a USB stick. The one I use is DVD Audio Extractor -- Full featured DVD audio ripper for your easy use.

Yep, plastic CD/DVD recorded in 5.1 or blue-ray. I have a portable media reader that USB’s into my MacBookPro and software converts to FLAC, or any one of an amazing possible formats....boggles my mind.

Yes, just like HDrracks, only less content.

Edit: The thread is regarding 5.1, though. So still limited in that regard.

foobar2000 can convert sacd dff files, or you can use the early ps3 that have the early firmware ver. to create an ISO of sacd. Foobar2000 can convert that in wav. and flac files and keep the 5.1 intact if the sacd is 5.1.

You can also use some Blu Ray players. Here's a fun read for anyone wanting to do this: https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/t...true/#comments

download DTS 5.1 content from the link above, I only tried 1 album and takes a long time without premium but does work

Napster was not legal, millions of people used it, I am not here to dispute legality of sources, but it is a shame that one just can't go to amazon and choose the DTS 5.1 surround album of their choice and be done with it. I will download what I can where I can and enjoy the acura ELS system, of course without going crazy and downloading it all.

For the record, my strong preference is to pay for physical DVD or uncompressed 5.1 CD however pickings are slim....
