Question Navigation Database Question

Does anyone know how often the Acura maps are updated? I checked this weekend and realized that my 2019.07.08 database is the latest.....

Probably makes no difference

If it's anything like the rest of the RDX updates, they come infrequently and fix little.

The website used to say quarterly updates but that seems to be removed.

The car has been out for two years, I think there has been only one official update, for which there was no notification. They originally said quarterly, then they changed it to yearly. Now, it seems it is “like, whenever, man.”

According to the site, Latest map database version available: 2019.07.08

Even with the latest year-old map update, it’s still seriously out of date. I generally use Apple Maps, but my wife was taking a solo trip today and likes the turn-by-turn navigation in the HUD. So I plugged in her destination, but noticed that it was taking her a long way there. The RDX nav doesn’t show an exit on I-476 in PA that was added 5 years ago! Needless to say, she used Apple Maps.

My Android Auto shows turn by turn navigation in the HUD via Google Maps. I didn't realize Apple Carplay didn't do this, (or I forgot).

Are map updates as urgent when you have the “Connected Features” option enabled?

From page 37 of the 2020 Navigation Manual:
H (Home) > Navigation > MENU > Connected Features
Changes the connection to the online server of the navigation system.
Select an option.
The following options are available:
• Disable: The navigation system will not be connected to the online server. The
navigation system uses the data stored in the map database.
Enable: The navigation system is connected to online server for the most up-to-
date driving and POI information.

The connected features are for points of interest. It wouldn't provide new roads that don't exist on the in-car map.

I would guess AFTER the release of the 21 TLX. They shouldn't be running a 2019 map on a brand new vehicle, but given Acura's track record with this new infotainment system, ANYTHING is possible.

I called HERE, the navigation company that supplies the updates, yesterday for help with getting my wife's 2019 RDX navigation database updated from the 2018 version to the 2019.07.09 version via the USB port. Typical of Acura contractors, they were unable to assist with getting the update to load into the vehicle. If any body has a suggestion, please let me know. I followed the guidelines published by the HERE for the USB update, but it didn't work.

BUT, i did ask if they were planning to release a 2020 update, and i was told by the customer service rep there wasn't any plans in the works right now!

You have to tell us what you're having trouble with specifically. Are you having trouble downloading it onto the USB? Or getting it from the USB to the car? And what indication are you having that there is a problem? Just that the version number doesn't update?

If you're trying to download from the USB to the car, it can take a long time (a couple of hours) and, importantly, it is only doing it when your USB stick is showing activity. For example, my stick has a flashing light when it is working. I did mine in the middle of COVID, so I was only taking short, five minute trips to the grocery store. When I did that, I found that most of the time the USB wasn't even working on downloading. I finally got mine through when I had the car on accessory mode while I was washing it, which I do by hand and so it takes a long time. Alternatively, you can force your USB to act by going into the nav update menu, but I forget how. Does that help?

The version number never changes from the 2018 version. I've had the issue loading it from the USB to the car. I've tried it in the accessory mode for several hours, i've tried it on a 4 hour continuous drive, and I've left it in place for several days while my wife drove around town. I reloaded the USB from the web site twice. The USB works fine, and I can see the 14.5 GB of data on the drive. The USB port on the car works fine when used to play songs from a cell phone.

From your description, it sounds like when you insert the USB, you do not see a pop up telling you about the upgrade?
Either try downloading the update again on the same USB, or try it on a different one.
You could format the USB stick and try copying an MP3 to it and plug in to the RDX to see if RDX can see the USB and play the song, this way you know the USB stick works. Then format again and download the maps to it.
I used a 16gb usb stick, it was a AData Pro 3.0.

While you or your wife are driving, do you see the USB stick "working"? Like is the light flashing? If it is not, then it's not doing anything. That happened to me when I went on short trips. If I turned off the car and turned it back on, the stick would not work any more. You can go to the update map screen and force the update, but the problem is I never knew if it was restarting from the beginning or continuing. That's why I did the accessory mode. But when I washing the car, I would check every 20 or 30 minutes to make sure it was still going.

The USB (a Cruzer Glide) is flashing its light when inserted, and i checked the data on it via my laptop, so its working. I've reloaded the USB with the map data from the website twice.
I never received any message about the RDX starting the update!

It should give you a message, if I recall right. Sorry, it's been months so the details are hazy. Like I said, try forcing the update by going to the navigation section and it should allow you to update it from there. See if that gives you the message that update is starting.

Went to the navigation section. No method to force the update listed there. Only instructions to plug in the USB and wait for the notification that update took, then to restart the RDX to install it.
Still stuck on version 2018.02.07!

Will swing by local Acura dealer tomorrow (visiting family where there is a nearby dealer!) and ask them what's up.

If you go to the dealer, they can just install the map update at that time.

What, they won't? I just assumed it wouldn't be a big deal for them to do it.

The might be able to do it, and they might not.

There has only been one (first asserted as quarterly, then asserted as yearly) update in the 2 and a half years this car has been out.

Map Update 2020.10.09 is available

New member, first post and first time Acura owner -- 2020 RDX Advanced SH-AWD (although we have owned several Hondas over the years).

I have been following this thread and checking the HERE download site regularly for a map update.
Checked yesterday and the new map update, 2020.10.09, is there for download! I have successfully downloaded and installed the update, although I haven't had a chance to test it out on the road yet.

I thought others might want to know.
