Dash cam in the OBD2 diagnostic port

Hi guys,

Do you think I will run into any issues if I connect a dash cam to the OBD2 port?

I'm thinking on getting this dash cam and it's powered by the OBD2 port.

Thanks in advance.

honestly it’s not that much more work to use a fuse tap and correctly do it. Doing it through the OBD2 is not the best way to power your dash cam

Anything you leave plugged into that port after exiting the vehicle will cause a slow drain on the battery.

Blackvue has an accessories that will power their dashcams via the OBD-II port. You can set it to cut power to the camera if the voltage drops below a certain level or after a set number of hours so it won't drain your battery.

I installed the OWL in my daughter's car. The OBD power source was reliable and zero issues in 3 months. I also recommend installing via a Power Magic Pro into your fuse box using easy to install fuse taps but you can't do that with the OWL. I have Blackvue's in two other cars and they are excellent.

Blackvue also sells a battery that charges as the car runs.

Then once the car is off - the Blackvue battery powers the camera.

I went this route as I didn't like running the dash cam off the car battery while the engine is off.

(even with the Blackvue device that would turn off the camera once the car battery voltage dropped to xx volts)
