USB navigation update
USB navigation update
I recently downloaded the most recent file to update via USB. Has anyone tried this? I don’t want to leave the car idling for hours for the rather large file (about 14gb). If I leave in accessory mode, it eventually shuts down to preserve battery.

I'm confused; if you're downloading to the USB from a computer, yes that can take a long time. But if you're loading it from the USB to your car, that should only take 10-15 minutes. That's my memory from when I did this many months ago.
I downloaded the navigation update via a Windows computer to the USB key. And it took a considerable amount of time. I’ve been trying to upload it from the USB key to my RDX. That is also taking an extremely long time such that I have been unsuccessful. I’ll have to take an hour long drive and hopefully it updates via that.

I took a drive for over an hour today and at the conclusion of my 1 Hour drive - the database was finally fully loaded. This current issue of the update is a very large file and takes a seriously long time to download FYI.
but - success!

It might be helpful to note that this is a map and POI database update, not a software update.
It's interesting that you were able to find one and install it, because map updates have appeared and rapidly disappeared several times in the past two years.

Downloading the update to the thumb drive can take 2-5 hours, depending on your internet connection. But loading it to the car takes less than an hour. Not 10-15 minutes. I've done the update twice.
Best to do it with the car running, like during a long drive. You can still use the navigation and infotainment system while it's loading.

Let's review, in case anybody is wondering how to check for map updates.
Go here:
https://acuranavi.navigation.com/home/en_US/AcuraNA/USD
Enter RDX and your car's year. On the next page enter your VIN and the version date of the map currently installed in your car. You'll find it somewhere under Settings but I don't remember the menu path and I'm too lazy to look at the manual right now.
AFAIK, there has only been one update since the 3G RDX has been out. The latest map is "2019.07.08". So, we're coming up on a year since the last update. The previous one was from February 2018. (I think it was "2018.02.28" but not sure.)

Thanks NooYawkuh....I was starting to get the impression there may have been another Navi update released. I am still surprised that Acura does not inform owners of Navi updates (well, the one or two anyway) and I think that last one was only pretty much discovered by another user poking around on HERE I think.. And...still surprised how many more updates I get (painlessly and flawlessly) on my many-year-old stand-alone Garmin unit in my LR3.
@jauntytime, was there any indication that your USB drive was active or being accessed during this time? Mine has a light on it that was dark when plugged into the RDX so I'm not sure if anything is happening.

Update: I have a Samsung 128GB USB 3.0. I tried inserting with the car on and off... and waiting 5 to 10 minutes. Still nothing. The display shows it at least detected a USB drive. But the navigation doesn't do anything. Thoughts? What drive do you all use? I checked and there is a HereMapV1 folder in the root. Still nothing....
That should work, theoretically. But I think with the first update, it was stipulated to use a 32 Gb USB drive formatted in FAT32. That's what I used then and I still use the same one because I know it works.
It may HAVE to be formatted in FAT32, not exFAT. That was the original requirement. I don't know if that's still true for the later updates.
I think you can format a drive larger than 32 Gb in FAT32 but I don't remember how. It may have to be done at the command line. And it may limit the drive to 32 Gb capacity.
Either way, don't re-download the update. You can just copy it to your computer and restore it later without losing its integrity. I've done a map update from a backup.
ETA:
Try this on your USB.

If I navigate around in the maps it will randomly pop the updating bar back up.... But no complete or anything like that.
I guess I just keep waiting. This process really isn't the best
It takes about an hour. I've heard of it taking as long as 1:20.
BTW, there is a new update released just a few days ago. I hope that's what you're loading.

You can leave it I accessory mode (not ON) and it won't drain the battery. I usually leave map updates for when I expect to be driving for more than an hour. I'm in no hurry to do map updates. The roads don't move much from one update to the next.
In the two + years I owned the '19 RDX I never updated that Navigation maps. I used it once or twice early on and decided it was so bad, it wasn't worth my time. Google maps is so much better (My connection issues with AA not withstanding)
It does.
I swear I don't remember it taking more than an hour, but I guess it's possible. The last time I did it I just plugged it in on the way to the grocery store, about a half hour drive. Got there, forgot I was doing it, shut the car off. Midway on the drive home it told me it was done.

Updated my Map a few day ago to the latest version: 2021.03.18. Verified the version was correct after restarting the RDX.
This morning I got a message that my MAP is out of date. Odd. But checking the Nav Update site, 2021.03.18 is still the latest.

Same exact thing happened to me today and I just updated mine yesterday.

The only one you can use is inside the console. That's the only one that connects to the infotainement system. All the others in the car are for charging only.
