I'm in Alberta... we have plenty of oil refineries here, and we pull the oil out of the ground here too. And yet our gas prices are through the roof. I believe we are generally a bit cheaper than the rest of Canada also, though I haven't looked into it recently.

$5.67?! Geez. Well, if I understand the oil market correctly, the presence of refineries or oil drilling doesn't always have an impact on price. Fuel and oil products are sold from refiners to different areas and buyers dependent on contracts and price. I spoke to a guy that works at the refinery here in North Salt Lake and he said that most all of the gasoline produced at that refinery goes to California. Seems inefficient to me since it could be transported to pumps here in Utah much easier. But that's the way the market works. Chances are, much of the oil products produced by the refineries near you might be shipped elsewhere.
Taxes and what not is another thing. California produces a ton of fuel. Lots of refineries. But some of the highest fuel prices in the US due to taxes.

Yes this is true. Cost of extracting and refining the oil is higher... But... We've been pulling it out of the ground for decades now. None of this is new... Especially not over the last 15 years... Yet prices keep climbing and climbing.
With the long weekend around the corner, prices will surely temporarily jump again.
Losiglow, you are right- I think most of our oil and gas goes everywhere but staying here. Just sucks. "Thanks for pulling our resources out of the ground and profiting hugely and then have us buy oil from somewhere else altogether"
