Oh Rats!!!

Or more likely squirrels.
When I checked the oil this afternoon I noticed some acorns by the dipstick and then a whole pile of bits and pieces on top of the transmission. I couldn't get a picture of the mess on the transmission but these were on top of the engine. I didn't see any damage to any wiring but I'm going to have to put a stop to this as quick as I can. I have 1 squirrel trap and 2 rat traps out tonight and the pellet gun will be coming out tomorrow.

Do what ever it takes to get rid of these creatures....they will do thousands in damage if they get the chance.
There is a rumor where I live that there are 35 fewer squirrels than there was a year ago. Just a rumor.......It started about the same time as I got my new high grade powerful air rifle with the "silencer" on it. I am sure there is no connection between the two...none!

Read somewhere that mothballs keep mice away. So maybe put a bunch is a nylon sock in that spot.

Take them out when you drive.

Had some nesting inside my snowblower this year. The engine would bog down under load and discovered a nest jamming the governor. They have a knack for doing their work in sensitive places. You do need to discourage them.

Chipmunks are my rodent du jour. I lost track of the number I've trapped at around 40. Still, I can barely walk anywhere in the yard without a little brown blur zooming by. It looks like their tail is up, but I think they're really giving me the finger.

Last summer I had rats nesting on the top of the engine in my Dad’s 2010 Accord that I had parked and covered in our driveway. Fortunately they did not do any damage. I put rat traps on the ground at the inside of each tire. I caught 5 or 6 in a week and that was the end of it.

Roasted acorns! Can I say these animals have great taste?

Well this took a turn for the worse. As soon as I started the car this morning to bring it around to the air compressor we noticed a funny smell in the cabin. It looks like they made it into the HVAC system. The last time we had the car out was Tuesday and we didn't smell anything then so we think this was pretty recent. We had a big rain storm this past week and that might have sent the rats seeking shelter. I checked my truck this afternoon and they have been in there also.
I have mothballs under the hoods now and several traps so I'm hoping I can get a handle on this before they do anymore damage.

I feel for you. Really, from personal experience. I do not plan to scare anyone so I will save the details of the trauma to myself.
Long story short, the mouse had a party in the cabin. I was lucky that the mouse did not do too much damage.
I did end up using a lot of lysol wipes and sprays, and have to admit the car (not RDX) never feel the same afterwards....
I hope sanitizing spray can erase this bad experience once and for all for you as well.

As for deterring those animals from coming back, try using herb-based spray (rosemary+peppermint among others) as well.

Oh man! I don't think there is nothing I can say that will help, other than YOU CAN, AND WILL DEAL WITH IT! There are things in life far worse. So far, it seems that they haven't eaten any wires.

It is not a spider bite.

They have changed the WHOLE look of the engine compartment! Even turned the engine 90 degrees!

You need to do more than try to discourage them; this calls for physically removing them from your space. You'll need some traps, at least. They are difficult to discourage, especially if they think they have something good. Good luck.

Good news and bad news.
It seems like the mothballs (thanks Madd Dog) are working, we haven't seen any new activity since putting them under the hood. The bad news is that I haven't caught a darn thing in the traps yet.

We took the car in to the dealer Wednesday and they had to remove the glovebox and some dash pieces to get to the blower motor and clean things out. The rats had used the fender liner for their nesting material.

Knew a guy who went to use his mower after months of not using it because he had a landscaper. He started it up okay but the chute kept clogging as he mowed.

Turned the thing over and there was a nest between the blade and the chute. In the nest was a LIVE OPOSSUM!!

He posted a picture and I wish I could find it now but the little guy was just staring into the camera like nothing had happened. He coaxed it out and it just waddled away. We couldn't believe the poor thing wasn't chopped into fresh roadkill but it didn't appear to have a scratch.

Electrifying Trap?

Seems to me there ought to be some way to use those battery poles as part of a deterrent system. A couple of parallel, uninsulated wires and a rat looking to roast its acorns. Maybe some different nuts can get roasted.

I like the way you think but with my luck I would probably end up burning the house down or something if I tried that.

We have this feral cat that hangs around now so maybe it will help keep the rats away.😀
