LKAS and ACC Experience

Just got back from a 1,000 mile round trip ride in my 2020 Tech . I drove between FL and NC mostly on I-95. For about 90% of my drive I used LKAS and ACC and loved them both. Each of the 8 hour drives were so much easier and less stressful. I quickly learned that you can't use this system to autonomously drive your car but if you use it as an "assist" it works extremely well. I rested my hands loosely on the wheel and let the car do most of the steering. I paid close attention around curves and passing large trucks but the ability to look away for a few seconds from the road and to enjoy the scenery , drink some water etc. made me feel almost like a passenger rather than a driver. I never realized how much mental concentration you must use to keep a car centered on the road and to adjust the speed for traffic. It took about 30 minutes to understand the limitations of the system but overall I was very impressed. I am not sure I would ever trust a 100% autonomous vehicle so I would always have to pay attention to the road anyway so this gives me pretty much all that I wanted in a self driving car.

I replaced my 2016 Elite with a 2020 Platinum Elite in June,

The LKAS in the 2016 was completely undependable. Sometimes it would follow the road, even through gentle curves. When operating at it's best, it would want to ping-pong from the right line and then back to the left line. The next time I used it, it would drift out of the lane almost immediately, as if it was not working at all.

The LKAS in the 2020 is absolutely perfect in straight sections of the roadway. It keeps the RDX centered in the lane without the ping-pong effect from the 2016. However the 2020 will not successfully navigate even a gentle curve. Despite this, it is an improvement over the 2016 because I know what to expect from it, and I can depend on it. It is still very useful when I need to open a bottle of pop. I just need to wait for a straight section of road.

The ACC in the 2016 was perfect, but it automatically disengaged at speeds below 40 KPH. As you know the 2019/2020 models will actually bring the RDX to a complete stop, when the car in front stops. The only complaint I have is that the brakes are applied much later and stronger than I would do myself. This was a little scary when I first got the 2020, because while waiting for it to apply the brakes, I realized that if it failed to operate, it would be too late for me to stop manually. As I have gained trust in the system, I don't have that fear anymore, but I wonder what the guy in front of me must be thinking when he looks in his rear view mirror. If someone were to be following me, and didn't realize that traffic was stopped ahead, I don't think he would have a chance to stop when the ACC applied the brakes.

Since the LKAS depends on the camera in the windshield, I wonder how the operation of the systems vary from one RDX to the next. Just a slight misalignment of the cameras could have effects on the performance of LKAS.

I found the LKAS on the 2020 to work pretty well on gentle curves and usually on not so gentle curves. I wouldn't trust it on a true bend in the road but overall it handled them better than I expected.

The problem with all these technologies is what happens if their alert mechanism fails and you are looking away? I consider them gizmos. When they work, they look great. We have too much traffic/curvy roads where I live so it doesn't really work well for my drives.

I noticed the LKAS on my wife's 2017 Honda pilot works a lot better on curves. In situations when I thought the pilot would not make it, it actually did. But on my 2019 RDX, it only works well when the road is almost perfectly straight.

Another thing I found was LAKS basically stops working when driving in sports mode, which is very understandable though.

My whole 1,000 mile trip using LAKS was in Sports mode. Possibly you weren't going at least 45 mph when you tried to set it.
