Extended Warranty for a 2019 RDX A-SPEC: Worth it? (Canada)
Hi all, copying this from my post on Reddit to see if I could get more opinions.
Just wanted to ask about your experience with the Acura brand and see if it's worth it to buy the extended warranty. To give you some context:
- I have a 2019 RDX-ASPEC (50K kilometers) on a lease about to end next month.
- I'm buying out the car through financing.
- Love the car, have had an excellent experience with it, and have taken good care of it and done all services at Acura dealerships.
- While negotiating and checking the financing options, the dealership offered the different extended warranty options. To give you an example, they offered the 7yr/130.000Km for 3.000$ (CAD). (included parts, labor, taxes, no deductible, transferable to new owner, etc).
Is it worth it to pay the extra money on extended warranty? (especially for someone as, again, takes good care of his stuff). And is it overpriced?

Honestly, in my opinion, they’re usually not worth the money. However, yours being a first model year, maybe it would be worth it. Although, on the flip-side, I would think that you would have encountered most potential problems by now.
It is a Honda product, so I can’t see why it wouldn’t be reliable down the road. If you had a German vehicle, I would recommend the warranty for sure!
Anyway, it’s a toss-up. If you feel more comfortable having that peace of mind then it might be worth if. However, you could also put that $3.000 in an account in case you have an issue down the road.

You used the word “negotiating,” but did you shop rate on that specific warranty? Is that the best price?
You have 50,000 km (31,069 miles) on your car. This warranty will cover it to 130,000 km (80,778 miles). In Canada, what is your powertrain warranty? In the USA, it is 6 year/70,000 miles. During the next 80,000km (49,7709 miles), do you think you’ll incur more than $3,000 of repairs not covered under the powertrain warranty?
Insurance is typically best used for low probability, catastrophic events. If you incurred $4,000 of repairs, would the extra $1,000 create a serious cash flow problem? Can you self-insure this risk? On an Acura with a good track record so far, I would not buy it.

In the U.S., for my new 2019, I bought a 4 year/100K Acura extended warranty. Not something I normally do, but there is so much 'stuff' in a car these days to go wrong, it was a first year model, was transferrable and I keep cars for 10 plus years usually anyway. I got an extended warranty price from the Las Vegas selling dealer ( we lived in Reno )and passed, someone here posted about a Florida dealer I believe and what their price was (it was appreciably better than Las Vegas dealer price. We proposed that price to Reno and they accepted it. So in the end, there might be a better price available that the one you noted. If we can get our hands on a 2023 we will be giving the RDX to our daughter so she will benefit by getting a low mileage (14,000K) car with an extended 4 year warranty just kicking in around mid-September. One less thing for her to worry about...

I agree with EFR. For me, it's not so much the drive train to be concerned about, it's all those (probably) expensive electronics do-dads, all the cameras, sensors, screens, computers, etc. I'm fairly confident in the drive train but who know how reliable all that other stuff will be in a few years?
