DIY: First oil change at what mileage?
Looking for some input, when I should do my first oil change? I have a recommendation from a mechanic to do the first at 2000 miles; will use full synthetic Mobil 1 0W-20 with an OEM filter. Currently at 800 miles.

Honda generally suggests leaving the initial oil fill in until the maintenance minder says to change it. I would leave that initial fill in until at least 20% remains on the oil indicator and I will not start looking to change until the 15% point is reached.
While Honda does not use break-in oil, per se, there is a fair amount of assembly moly in the engine, and therefore in the oil, that Honda recommends you leave in for that first fill.

I, typically, never listen to "Maintenance Minders" but I may listen for the first change based on commentary above if research proves it accurate. I will then change with full synthetic (I like Pennzoil Platinum or Castrol) every 5K miles like clockwork.

I go with every year but no more than 10k miles.
The first oil change at 2k miles or change oil immediately is a thing of the past. The factory that add these oils and filter are probably cleaner than your local mechanic shop.

Thanks for the link, just read a few of those on oil change periodicity and oil monitoring systems. Just like I did on my Countryman Cooper S All 4 I'll most likely change the oil and filter at 5k miles and use full synthetic. One thing I won't do is use an aftermarket oil fiter, did that once on the Mini and the crushwasher provided was the wrong type,

As a general rule, folks over think the oil filter; here are a few comments to mull over:
- As with all sieve type filters, oil filter efficiency improves as the filter ages.
- For any healthy engine, it will typically take over 20,000 miles to saturate the filter element enough to cause the filter to go into bypass mode.
- Changing synthetic oil and the filter every 5,000 miles on virtually any modern vehicle not living on a race track is throwing away good oil and a good filter.
- As of my most recent Honda product, Honda was still recommending an oil filter change EVERY-OTHER oil change; they may still be following that practice (if not they've probably reduced the oil filter size).

I get Mobil1 oil at walmart for like $22, plus $10 for mobil1 oil filter. I do run same oil filter for two oil changes, but I follow MID which is around 5-6K miles. Turbo engines are not easy on oil, there is really no upside trying to stretch OCI given that it only costs $20-25 for oil considering its $40K+ car. Oil is cheap.

Yes, turbo engines are hard on conventional oil, the same doesn't hold true for synthetic. Changing synthetic oil every five to six thousand miles is extreme overkill; some turbocharged engines over in Europe don't call for an oil change until at least the 20,000 mile mark.

The filter is the least of your worries; filters improve with age (improved efficiency) and yet will not go into bypass mode for an easy 20,000+ miles. That's why Honda recommends filter changes EVERY-OTHER oil change for many of their cars.

Mobil1 oil filter has a guarantee of 20k miles!
I cut my mobil1 oil filter after 10k miles and it barely had anything in it!
So you say I am wasting money changing mobil1 every 5-6k miles as recommended by manufacture? Hmn, it costs me $22 for 5qt, I must be wasting a lot of money....

So I'm curious, where does the manufacturer (manufacturer as in Honda/Acura, not the dealership), recommend five to six thousand miles? In addition, what oil does the manufacturer recommend? I strongly suspect is is a semi-synthetic oil. If you use a full synthetic then yes, you are wasting money by changing it so often. That said, if your car is under warranty, then in the event of an engine related warranty issue, it is much less of a hassle to change when they recommend, even if you are throwing away good oil.
1st gen RDX requires synthetic Mobil1 5w-30 or other synthetic oil that meets HTO-6 certification. mobil1 is a factory oil for 1st gen.
I’ve always changed oil myself, and got over 170k miles on my car and I am original owner. When I get 3rd gen rdx, will continue changing myself with mobil1 by following owners manual. 3rd gen rdx needs 0w-20, which is very hard to find non synthetic.

owners manual for my car says follow MID, and it comes up around 5-6k miles for an oil change based on driving conditions.

I, too, buy the 5qt jugs of full synthetic from Walmart for under $23. Pennzoil Platinum is my preference but you won't go wrong with whatever's on sale (Mobil1, Castrol, Valvoline, etc.)
#23
Agreed. Any synthetic would do. Number of good brands to pick from. Given such a low cost, I would not be using non-synthetic 0w-20 in any car, especially the one that has turbo engine.

If you don't believe me, and this sure seems to be the week for it, test it yourself. Take a colander, line it with cheese cloth or other porous "filter" material, and then pour soup stock or orange juice, or anything else you want filtered through it. As the filter gains particulate, the purity of what comes through the filter rises dramatically.

its Hondas recommendation to change it every other time. I dont think this is for efficency reasons, they probably think its not necessary.
Mobil1 is more expensive than honda filter, also you save yourself some time and messines if you change filter every other time.

For me the first OC will be when the reminder pops up and tells me it's time. I'm quite sure the engineers who designed the systems, and the chemists who formulate the oil, know considerably more than I do.

A little common sense goes a long way. Why would Acura/Honda program a MM for people NOT to follow?
