This is just an issue with tempered glass. Maybe the supplier for Acura is having some issues, maybe not, I do not know, but it's not an RDX issue that you can avoid by simply buying a different vehicle. Let me demonstrate:

Tempered glass is just what it sounds like: Tempered. The glass goes through an oven. The glass is then cooled. It is heated/cooled at different rates by virtue of its thickness. The outside heating and cooling quicker than the inside. This creates tension within the structure of the glass itself. This lends it to magnificent failures when they DO occur, and is also why it granulates instead of turning into steak knives upon said failure.
My advice? Buy what you like, tint the glass, and motor on. ANY CAR CAN HAVE THIS FAILURE. I have proven that above with a few minutes on Google. I spent longer cutting/pasting than I did finding those links.

It does not make me feel any better that this issue is not isolated to Acura only. Frankly, I dont care.
We purchased Acura product and they need to take responsibility for it and provide appropriate remedy.

Wow…it’s not about how it can happen to any car. Of course this can happen to any car.
The problem is that this seems to happen more often than not on this vehicle compared to other models. I’ve been on this forum for a couple years now and have seen this issue pop up over and over again especially on the RDX. I don’t see it happening to the MDX.
I sure am glad I didn't buy a CX5 because of this issue. I was actually strongly tempted to snag a 2022 Signature model until I drove the RDX. The SH-AWD and nicer interior won out over the 5mpg more and simpler ownership experience of the CX5, though.
*Normally I edit plates on other people's vehicles, but this person posted it of their own car in a group with a 17K membership, so that's on them.
That said, I am throwing ceramic tint on every shred of glass in this car. 1) It helps in a wreck or other kinetic event with spalling. I know what glass smells like. I don't like that. 2) It will make clean up so much easier IF this happens.
Happened to my 2016 RDX as well. This was back in 2018. Wife closed the door and glass just caved in. I went to dealer and was told this is the first time they heard of it but could not be covered warranty. I know a glass guy that is replacing the glass at Acura dealers. He said he's been doing quite a few for them even my generation. I tried to reach out to Acura client but they said it's not a recall and couldn't do anything either. They recommend talking directly to dealer.
So, is Acura going to reimburse folks who paid out-of-pocket to replace their rear window because the dealerships/corporate wouldn't fix it under warranty?
Interesting that the TSB only applies to 19 and 20 models, implying a change in 21 and newer models. And my warranty expires in 5 weeks, so we all know when this will happen to my 19.

2020 models have a VIN range specified so it would appear the change occurred mid-year on the 2020s. Mine falls within the affected VIN range.
Glad to hear Acura has figured it out and will be replacing shattered rear window glass. I hope those who have had to pay to get the it replaced have a good chance of reimbursement if they contact Acura. Costs nothing to try.
They say: POSSIBLE CAUSE: Incorrect specification for the rear defroster grid.

My concern is if I use the rear defrost is it going to randomly explode one day then? Specifically once I’m out of warranty, sounds like a case for a class action lawsuit
Same thing happen to my RDX. I though it was someone/something hitting the rear glass but nothing was on the security camera then saw this thread and also heard from safelite there are a number of people having the issue. While Acura doesn’t cover it, I also opened a claim with Acura customer relations and they should be looking at the total complains re: window shutters. Call corporate and log in the complain and hope they issue a recall.
My guess is this is the issue with the hatch and there is no guarantee it won’t happen again.

How is it possible for it not to be a recall? Seems like a safety issue. Just like a limp mode I guess…
There’s clearly a defect in a “batch” of rear glass where it slightly expands and then shatters! Yes should be a recall but manufacturers try to avoid large cost like this unless absolutely forced!

I don't have it anymore but I had a 2022 RDX for a grand total of 8 days before the rear window shattered. Posted in this thread. The car had a January 2022 production date. It's not a batch thing, it's a design issue that affected my 2022. Dealer bought the car back after they couldn't even give me a rental car or an ETA on the replacement rear glass (the dealer was great throughout, none of this was their fault). At least in Canada they're replacing them under warranty. This is unfortunate as it was a great car otherwise.

I only found out about this since glass shops could not readily get the rear window as it was back ordered. I called the dealer and they said my car was the 6th car this happened to that week. They replaced it for free.
So, my window shattered a week ago today. Acura just brought my car back this morning after replacing the left front lower control arm and the rear window glass. They (Honda) covered it.
I guess I’m lucky that it happened after years of this happening to others. I wonder if others can be reimbursed - my dealer said there’s a TSB for the windows failing like they have/are.

My warranty expires in Aug 2023 (4 years) and I’m worried that this may happen again outside of warranty. Will I be screwed or will they still cover it then?
I hate that happened to you. I’m appreciative that American Honda took care of mine. Like you, U am worried it may happen again and I’ll be on the hook for replacing it. Plus, with Honda replacing it, I “know” that it was properly installed/maintained. Actually - my dealer said this was the first they’d heard of it. I wonder if others automatically claimed it on their insurance, because I see these things everywhere here, and can’t imagine no one else has had this seemingly widespread issue.
Safelite tried to sell me on letting them replace the window, but that would have been an insurance claim and a 3rd party piece of glass. On 2nd thought, maybe the 3rd party glass is better-engineered.
It’s crazy how über careful i am closing the doors now. You’d think i had soft-close doors.
Also, I can hear shards of glass rattling when I open/close the hatch now. 🫤

Update. Called Maple Acura and the amazing woman in service asked if I was under warranty and said “no problem, bring it in under warranty!”
Taking it in Monday. She said they need it for 4 hours as they have to vacuum out the glass in the hatch. I asked why they can’t take off the plastic panel and get access to the broken glass and she said that it falls between the steel panels and isn’t accessible.
Any ideas what the recourse is if they can’t get it all out and it rattles around inside? Will Acura replace the entire hatch?

Sounds like they have done it before. Go for it, and hope they vacuum out all the glass pieces. You should be good.

I wonder if the glass break is related to the misalignment of the rear hatch? I know my 2019 was misaligned and struggled to close until I had the dealer fix it. Given the hatch is a composite and not metal, maybe there was more torque on the glass due to the hatch being misaligned? The misalignment was happening often for a while early on, but maybe QC has dropped and it is happening again.

Did your rear glass broke? They won't replace proactively it if its not broken....

I'm confused. The TSB rear windshield glass part number 73211-TJB-A02 is listed on OEMAcuraparts for $235 but there is also a part number 73211-SEP-H10 Rear Windshield Glass for $900
Has anyone had the windshield shatter OUT OF WARRANTY and had it replaced for free? I had my 2020 A-Spec rear window shatter UNDER WARRANTY and it was replaced without issue. I am buying the car out next month and will no longer have warranty coverage but in my opinion, this should be covered by Acura for the life of the car.
My shattering occurred exactly the same way with the same sound. You’ve nailed it. PTSD inducing.
Never seen anything like it. I thought it happened when I got into the car a few hours later. Had to go through the video to figure out what happened. Was an impressive thud.
Glass was replaced, but there is a ton trapped inside the tailgate. Anyone have suggestions how to get it out? I tried to take all the trim off and still can't get it to it all
