Where to put a full-size spare

When I've had SUVs before I've often set up a full-size spare with a standard aluminum wheel that matches all the other wheels. This is in case I got a flat in an area some distance from where the tire could be serviced so I can ride indefinitely on a full-size spare with standard wheel. Moreover I would rotate tires with the standard spare increasing the lifetime of all tires on active wheels. Has anyone tried to fit a full-size spare tire in their MDX Iva 2019 hybrid. Thank you

I have a 2006 MDX and have a full size spare under under the vehicle in the factory location with the factory hoist. I can't imagine you not being able to do the same!

So the 2019 MDX Hybrid doesn't have a spare or the attachment for a spare. What acura parts do I need to attach full sized spare?

I negotiated the price and installation of the spare tire kit (minus the donut spare) at the time of purchase. I purchased a spare 20" rim and tire on eBay. I don't know the part numbers for adding a spare tire kit to the hybrid?

Acura P/N 06421-TZ5-A51 Here is a link to the part https://www.oemacuraparts.com/oem-pa...gy-06421tz5a51.
If you want a full size wheel you would have to purchase a rim and tire. Everything else you need will be supplied in the kit.

Is it pretty easy to take out the spare when needed? Or, is it a surgery job where you gotta wrestle with tools and spend 15 minutes just to take out the darn thing?

Also is there space somewhere you can store the tire jack in the trunk?

The jack and tools are stored in the foam cutouts you access by removing the tray under the rear hatch. As far as accessing the spare it is pretty simple. There is a tool provided that you use to crank and lower the spare from the bottom of the car. Once down you unhook the spare from the cable. Repeat the process in reverse to replace the wheel back under the car. BTW, installing the mechanism is super simple with fastening done by 6 bolts from underneath the car.

The Hybrids do not come with a spare, tools or jack.

be aware that the top of the spare catches all the dust and water that the car kicks up on the road. You can wash it once in a while when you check pressures put it is going to be a really messy tire change, even with the small spare.

I wrapped the spare in the bag Discount Tires used after they mount and balanced the spare. Purchased an universal spare tire cover on Amazon, $15, to cover the tire to hide and keep cleaner under the MDX. Combo worked extremely well for my 11 MDX with a full size spare for the last +5 years.

You can see the spare tire kit that fits into foam cut-outs in the hatch:

You can see the two tools from the kit you can use to raise and lower the spare tire:

how do you get the hanger and cable thru the center without water getting into it thru the holes needed for each? 3rd gen uses a hanger on a cable that goes thru the center of the wheel.

The Discount Tire bag is about the thickness as 13 gal kitchen trash bag. I put the tire in the bag with top of rim toward the opening of the bag. I was able to stuff the loose end inside the center cap hole. The MDX hanger cable with center cap holder fits in the hole with zero issues. The hanger cable holder with Discount tire bag stuffed inside makes a pretty good seal with the rim center cap to keep road debris and water out. I know it is working because it is pretty filthy on top of the Discount Tire big touching the underside of the MDX when I lower to check the spare PSI.

I think a 55 gal trash bag might be too thick to do the same thing?

I guess my question should have been, "can I install a spare under the truck like you might do with an ICE car?"

Everything looks and works the same for the fwd, sh-awd, or sh-sh-awd for the mounting points for the spare tire kit and tools Just the sh-awd version comes with the spare tire kit included (tools, jack, hoist, and donut spare). The fwd and sport hybrid has no spare tire mounting kit or tools. The only thing I had in the hatch with my sport hybrid was a 12v air compressor (haven't tried yet). The only other thing that might be an issue down the road is you might have to go with the OEM hitch if aftermarket hitches can't accommodate a full size spare.
